For a continuous YouTube podcast stream, start by checking whether YouTube’s English automatic live captions are available for your channel and stream. If they are not suitable—for example, you need another language or more control—send captions from compatible encoder or caption software. In either case, verify captions in the live player and caption the saved video separately: YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends.
Choose a live caption method
YouTube documents two routes for captions during a live stream: automatic English captions generated by YouTube, or captions supplied by the production workflow. The right choice depends on the channel’s eligibility, language, latency, production setup, and how much correction the captions need.
| Consideration | YouTube automatic live captions | Supplied caption feed |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | May not be enabled for every channel; check the individual stream’s settings. | Requires an encoder or caption software/provider compatible with YouTube’s documented input. |
| Language and latency | YouTube documents English and identifies normal latency as the supported path; low or ultra-low latency can affect availability. | Depends on the caption workflow and its language support. YouTube’s event workflow recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay. |
| Accuracy and review | Recognition is automatic and can be affected by audio quality, accents, dialects, noise, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages. | Can provide a separate production workflow, but the sources do not establish that any named provider is best or guarantee its accuracy. |
| Restart continuity | YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee that settings or captions persist through every restart in a 24/7 workflow. | YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point; restart behavior must be tested with the actual encoder and provider. |
| Archived video | Live captions do not remain after the stream ends; YouTube generates a separate VOD caption track later. | Plan separately to add or review captions on the saved video. |
If you use a continuous loop or restart sessions, do not assume the live caption path will automatically resume. Test a real session restart, then verify the captions in the viewer’s player.
Option A: Enable YouTube automatic live captions
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream.
- Open the stream settings and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Automatic captions as the caption source.
- Set the video language to English.
- Start or preview the stream and check from a viewer session that captions appear and remain synchronized with speech.
This is the simplest route when English captions are appropriate and the option is available. YouTube describes this as a per-stream setting, not a channel-wide switch. Its documented automatic live-caption path is limited to English and normal latency; check your actual Studio options rather than assuming every channel or stream has the feature.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Improve recognition by improving the audio
YouTube cautions that automatic recognition can be affected by mispronunciations, accents, dialects, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages. For a podcast, keep host speech distinct, avoid unnecessary background audio, and reduce cross-talk where possible. These are practical responses to the recognition problems YouTube identifies, not a guarantee of accurate captions.
Option B: Send captions from an encoder or caption workflow
If automatic captions are unavailable or do not meet your needs, YouTube documents embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions and a caption-ingestion workflow over HTTP. These require compatible production tools; choose the path that matches your encoder and caption provider.

Embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions
- In the stream’s settings, enable Closed captions and select Embedded 608/708.
- Configure your encoder to include EIA 608/CEA 708 captions, either from a supported file format or in real time.
- Test the outgoing stream and confirm captions appear correctly in YouTube’s live player.
YouTube says it currently supports one caption track for embedded 608/708. Confirm that your encoder’s format and caption workflow are compatible before relying on this route.
Caption ingestion over HTTP
- Enable closed captions for the live event in YouTube’s event workflow.
- Copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Enter that URL in compatible caption software or provide it to your caption provider using its documented procedure.
- Follow YouTube’s recommendation for the described live-event workflow: add a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay.
- Verify the caption feed in the live player, including after a stream restart.
YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed. Treat the signed ingestion URL as sensitive workflow information and use it only in the compatible caption setup. YouTube’s live-caption requirements page lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as examples; these are not endorsements or assurances of present-day compatibility with an always-on stream. Check current versions, service terms, language support, availability, and suitability with the vendor.

Make captions useful to podcast viewers
Captions should convey meaningful audio, not just a rough sequence of recognized words. W3C guidance describes captions as including dialogue, speaker identification, and significant non-speech audio. For a multi-host podcast, make clear who is speaking; include meaningful sounds such as laughter or music cues when they convey information that viewers need.
W3C WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.2.4, Captions (Live), is Level AA and states: “Captions are provided for all live audio content in synchronized media.” This describes a completeness standard; the mere presence of automatically generated speech text does not establish conformance. Whether a legal requirement applies depends on the publisher, jurisdiction, and context.

Caption the recording after the live stream
Live captions and captions on the saved video are separate jobs. YouTube states that live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends; it later generates a new VOD caption track, which may differ from the live captions.
- Open the saved video’s caption controls in YouTube Studio after the VOD captions are available.
- Review the generated track, paying particular attention to names, specialist terms, speaker changes, and sections with music or overlapping speech.
- Correct the automatic captions, enter captions manually, or add a caption file.
- Check the published recording’s captions in the player.
Make this review part of the process for each finished broadcast segment or recording. A live caption feed is not a substitute for checking the archive.

Troubleshooting
- Automatic captions are not offered in Studio: The feature may not be enabled for your channel, or the stream may not meet the documented English and normal-latency conditions. Check the individual stream settings and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Captions are missing from the live player: Confirm that captions are enabled for the stream, that the intended source is selected, and—if using an external feed—that the encoder or caption software is sending to the correct configured endpoint. Check in an actual viewer session.
- Words are wrong or sentences are incomplete: YouTube identifies poor audio, noise, accents, dialects, mispronunciations, overlapping speakers, and multiple languages as possible causes. Improve speech separation and audio clarity, then correct the saved VOD track.
- Captions stop after a restart: YouTube’s guidance does not guarantee restart-proof continuity for a 24/7 workflow. Check the stream entry point, encoder or provider session, and caption connection after restart; test the exact workflow before relying on it.
- The saved video has no captions or a different track: This is not necessarily a continuation of the live captions. Wait for the separate VOD caption process, then review or add captions in Studio.
- An external caption feed fails: Verify compatibility and the signed Captions Ingestion URL with the caption software/provider, and confirm that the stream entry point is not already receiving another caption feed.
