Start by checking whether OBS can use a hardware encoder, then strip the scene back to static artwork and audio and test at 720p30. If the stream still struggles, try 480p30. These steps can reduce CPU and rendering pressure, but no setting guarantees a particular CPU saving or unattended reliability on every older PC.
1. Check OBS for a hardware encoder
Open OBS → Settings → Output and inspect the Encoder list. If a compatible option appears, try the hardware encoder—such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync Video—instead of x264. Hardware encoding moves video-encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU, which can free CPU capacity. Availability depends on the PC, graphics hardware, drivers, and OBS build. OBS describes this as a performance recommendation, not a guarantee that a stream will run without problems (OBS hardware encoding guidance, dated January 11, 2022).
Compare the result with x264
Test the actual image at the bitrate you plan to use. Early hardware encoder generations may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264’s default veryfast preset. If the hardware output looks unacceptable or has compatibility problems, x264 remains a fallback—but encoding on the CPU may bring back the pressure you were trying to reduce. Make the choice based on both stream stability and the picture viewers receive, not the encoder label alone.
Look for Quick Sync on older computers
On a laptop or older desktop without a separate gaming GPU, check whether Intel Quick Sync appears in the Encoder list. OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance says support starts with Intel Core-i processors from the 2xxx generation, and recommends Haswell/Core-i 4xxx or newer for better quality than early implementations. Actual availability still depends on the system and software configuration.

2. Simplify the study-stream scene
A mostly static study stream often needs fewer moving parts than a show with live graphics. Keep only what improves the listening or viewing experience.
- Use one static image source for cover art instead of an animated overlay.
- Use a Media Source or VLC Source for media and audio.
- Remove browser sources that are unnecessary; if one must stay, reduce it to the smallest dimensions that work.
- Keep only essential text and avoid decorative animation that does not help the audience.
OBS identifies browser-source count and size, animated browser content, and scene complexity as factors worth reducing when troubleshooting performance. Simplifying a scene may help both CPU use and GPU rendering; it does not guarantee a specific reduction (OBS encoding-performance troubleshooting, dated June 12, 2021).

3. Lower output resolution or frame rate if needed
In OBS → Settings → Video, review the output resolution and frame rate. A practical starting point for an older PC is 720p at 30 fps. If the stream is not smooth or OBS reports encoding or rendering trouble, try 480p at 30 fps. These are starting points inferred from OBS’s advice to lower output resolution or frame rate and YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations; neither source sets a universal preset for old-PC study streams.
Lowering output resolution can reduce encoder load, while lowering frame rate reduces rendering and encoding work. If 60 fps is not stable, 30 fps is a sensible test for a mostly static stream. Avoid lowering the base canvas resolution unless the PC is especially constrained: doing so can require repositioning sources. OBS does not quantify a universal CPU saving for any of these changes (OBS performance guidance).

The bitrate figures are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of CPU use. Choose a bitrate within the applicable range that your upload connection can sustain; changing bitrate alone is not a substitute for fixing an overloaded scene or encoder. YouTube’s live encoder settings also list H.264 as a common supported live codec.
4. Match YouTube’s encoder settings
In OBS’s output settings, use CBR (constant bitrate) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Verify that the codec and transmission protocol selected by your encoder are supported by the current YouTube guidance; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transmission. The exact names and available choices can vary by encoder and software version, so check the current YouTube encoder settings page.

5. Test the real stream before leaving it unattended
A quiet preview is not proof that the PC can stream continuously. Test with the artwork, audio, and expected movement actually in the scene, then monitor both OBS and YouTube while the test runs.
- Start a representative test stream with the intended scene and audio.
- In OBS, open View → Stats and watch for rendering or encoding trouble.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, check the preview, stream health, and any messages.
- If a problem appears, change one setting at a time—such as encoder, frame rate, resolution, or a scene source—then test again so you can identify what helped.
YouTube recommends testing with representative content and monitoring stream health and messages. OBS also cautions that capability depends on encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; basic system compatibility does not establish that a particular PC can sustain this workload (YouTube streaming tips; OBS system requirements, dated August 25, 2021).

6. Check whether the bottleneck is GPU rendering
Hardware encoding can reduce CPU encoding work, but OBS still needs GPU resources to composite and render the scene. If OBS reports rendering lag or GPU overload, changing only the encoder may not help.
- Simplify the scene and remove unnecessary browser or animated sources.
- Close applications you recognize as using substantial GPU resources.
- On Windows, OBS suggests trying Run as administrator as one troubleshooting step for some GPU-overload cases. Treat it as a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed fix.
If you cannot identify why the GPU is overloaded, change one factor at a time and retest rather than assuming that a new encoder will solve a rendering problem (OBS performance troubleshooting).
7. Choose latency and DVR for a non-interactive stream
For a study stream where you are not responding to viewers in real time, normal latency may be preferable to prioritizing low latency. YouTube says low latency can increase playback buffering and is less important when the creator does not interact with viewers. Decide separately whether to enable DVR: viewers who should be able to pause or rewind may benefit from it. Review the current options in YouTube’s live stream settings.
8. Consider a hardware upgrade only if configuration is not enough
If no suitable hardware encoder is available and x264 cannot meet your needs, a compatible NVIDIA GPU is one possible upgrade path—not a blanket recommendation. OBS lists the GeForce 750 Ti or newer as supported, but GTX 1650 revisions are not equivalent: revision 2 contains Turing-generation NVENC, while revision 1 contains a fifth-generation encoder. Before buying, verify the exact card revision, compatibility, driver support, power supply requirements, physical fit, and whether the PC’s existing Intel Quick Sync support is already adequate (OBS hardware encoding guidance).
