You can broadcast a music playlist on YouTube as a continuous live stream by sending a live audio-and-video feed from an encoder to YouTube Live. OBS is one encoder YouTube lists for HLS ingest, but the available documentation does not establish a verified OBS setting sequence for looping a local playlist file. Before building a 24/7 setup, confirm the playlist source and looping behavior in your chosen encoder, configure YouTube ingest, and make sure you have the rights needed to stream every track.
How the playlist becomes a YouTube live stream
A playlist file is not itself a YouTube live broadcast. The workflow has three parts:
- Music source: your local audio files or another playlist source provide the tracks.
- Encoder: software such as OBS packages the audio with a video feed and sends it continuously using an ingest protocol supported by YouTube.
- YouTube Live: YouTube receives the feed through a configured live stream and makes it available to viewers.
YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. The HLS protocol’s “playlist” is a rolling list of media segments sent to YouTube; it is not a guide to a local music playlist file or how to loop tracks. Do not assume that importing a playlist into an encoder automatically creates a reliable 24/7 broadcast.
Check channel access and music rights first
Confirm that you can go live
Make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel and that you can open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Account eligibility and interface requirements can change, so check the current YouTube Help guidance for live streaming rather than relying on a fixed waiting period or an older community guide.

Clear the rights for every track
YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A detected match may cause a placeholder image, a warning, an interruption, or termination of the stream. Having a license does not necessarily prevent a match from interrupting the broadcast: YouTube says a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Check the rights for every track, and arrange allowlisting with the rights owner when applicable. If the Live Control Room identifies a match, stop or resolve the affected material rather than assuming the stream can continue unchanged. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Configure a YouTube HLS stream
HLS is one YouTube ingest option. It sends media in segments, so YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Choose it when your encoder supports the required output and its ingest characteristics suit your needs; do not treat it as the universal best choice for a 24/7 music channel.

- Prepare the source and visual feed in your encoder. OBS is one documented HLS-capable option. Set up the music source and any accompanying visual layer in the encoder you use. The official HLS instructions do not specify how to import or loop a local music playlist in OBS, so verify that behavior against the encoder’s current documentation before relying on it for continuous playback.
- Choose HLS in YouTube’s live setup. Follow YouTube’s Set up an HLS stream instructions to create or select an HLS stream key and copy the HLS ingest URL into your encoder. Use the URL and key for the intended live stream, and keep the key private.
- Match the HLS transport requirements. YouTube specifies TS-format media segments lasting 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Its HLS setup also specifies HTTPS POST/PUT requests and lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as supported HLS audio codecs. These are ingest-protocol requirements, not necessarily labels or controls exposed directly in every encoder’s interface. YouTube’s page states: “Segment Duration: between 1-4 seconds, lower segment duration results in lower latency.”
- Set stereo audio to YouTube’s recommendations. YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate for stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stable 24/7 operation.
- Start the encoder and inspect Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and watch for stream-status messages, warnings, and copyright matches. Keep the Live Control Room available so you can respond if the ingest or content status changes.
YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol documentation describes how the encoder’s media segments and rolling ingest playlist work. That protocol playlist should not be confused with a local music playlist file.
Choose an ingest method with the right expectations
Compare options on the factors that affect your setup: whether your encoder supports the chosen protocol, whether its output formats are compatible, how much latency you can accept, how familiar the workflow is to you, and what recovery capability you need. YouTube documents HLS ingest requirements and says its segmented delivery has higher latency than continuous RTMP. The available guidance does not establish a universally best method for 24/7 music radio or a guaranteed uptime architecture.

What a documented setup does—and does not—guarantee
- YouTube’s HLS setup explains creating an HLS stream and meeting ingest requirements; it does not guarantee 24/7 uptime.
- The cited YouTube documentation does not verify a particular OBS or VLC sequence for importing and looping a local playlist file.
- It does not establish VPS sizing, continuous hosting costs, automatic failover, or what hardware a locally hosted stream would require.
- Test the playlist source and recovery behavior in your actual encoder and hosting setup before treating it as an unattended broadcast.
