To run a 24/7 YouTube lofi radio stream with OBS and VLC, add your authorized tracks to an OBS VLC Video source, enable Loop Playlist, build a scene with your visuals and audio, and connect OBS to a YouTube stream using its server URL and stream key. The playlist can repeat indefinitely, but it cannot keep a computer, internet connection, OBS, or YouTube ingest online by itself.
Before you start
- Activate YouTube live streaming early. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
- Prepare media you are entitled to use. A YouTube stream and any archive are subject to music rights requirements; review the rights section below before choosing tracks.
- Plan for a machine that stays available. With the local method, the computer, power, operating system, OBS process, network connection, and YouTube ingestion all need to keep working. The playlist loop only repeats media.
Set up the lofi playlist and OBS scene
- Create a scene for the broadcast. In OBS, add your chosen artwork or animation as a visual source. Add any other scene elements you need, keeping the layout simple enough to verify clearly in YouTube’s preview.
- Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + → VLC Video. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.
- Add the media files. In the VLC Video source properties, add the audio/video files you have rights to stream and arrange them in the desired playback order. OBS supports playlist order and a shuffle option.
- Enable looping. Turn on Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning after the final item. Choose whether to shuffle based on the listening experience you want; a fixed sequence is more predictable, while shuffle varies the order.
- Check visibility behavior. Review the source’s behavior when hidden in a scene. If playback should continue while the source is not visible, configure that behavior deliberately rather than assuming hiding a source will preserve playback.
- Verify audio routing. Play the source and watch OBS’s audio mixer. Confirm the VLC source is audible, the intended stream output track is enabled, and no other source is unintentionally doubling or masking the music.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before launch
- Create or open a stream in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream workflow, create a stream or select the one you intend to use. Follow the current encoder setup flow in YouTube’s guide.
- Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select YouTube or the applicable custom service setup. Enter the server URL and stream key shown for that YouTube stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder preset. YouTube supports RTMPS, encrypted RTMP over TLS; use the current YouTube preset where available. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but it has higher latency and additional segment and playlist requirements. Unless you specifically need HLS capabilities, follow the current OBS and YouTube preset instead of applying HLS-specific settings to a standard setup; see YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
- Run a private or unlisted check. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s incoming preview before making the stream public. Check picture, sound, playlist transitions, and the live dashboard for dropped frames or ingest warnings. Listen to the preview, not just OBS’s local monitoring.
- Go live using the selected YouTube workflow. Depending on the stream setup, start the encoder in OBS and then confirm or start the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Verify that viewers can hear the intended audio and see the intended scene.
- Keep a recovery plan. Decide who will notice a stopped stream and how they will restart OBS, restore the internet connection, or reconnect YouTube. Looping does not restart OBS after a crash or repair a failed connection.
Choose stream settings for your own setup
There is no single bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or computer specification established for every 24/7 lofi stream. The right values depend on your output resolution and frame rate, encoder, media and scene, operating system, and available upload connection. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance and the matching OBS preset, then test with your actual scene and connection. Avoid treating a playlist feature as evidence that a machine or network can sustain a particular load.
If you need a literal uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast, remember that it exceeds YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That duration rule is from YouTube Help’s encoder setup guidance, crawled September 2026. Check current Live Control Room behavior and arrange separate recordings or shorter broadcasts if keeping a complete archive matters. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Music rights and monetization are separate checks
Use only music for which you have the necessary rights for the specific uses you plan: live broadcast, any replay or archive, and monetization if applicable. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. Permission should cover both the sound recording and the underlying musical composition, and should specify relevant territories and uses.

- Do not rely on a “copyright free” label alone. A download page or credit line does not establish that your license covers a live YouTube broadcast, an archive, or monetization.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even licensed music may cause interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
- Do not assume permission guarantees monetization. Copyright compliance and YouTube Partner Program eligibility are different tests. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and require original, authentic content; repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible. The policy specifically gives collections of songs from different artists as an example that can fail monetization even where permission exists. See YouTube’s monetization policies, including its July 15, 2025 policy note.
Keep a local 24/7 stream running reliably
OBS and VLC provide local control over your scene and playlist, but a local broadcast depends on the full chain remaining available: power, computer, operating system, OBS, VLC playback, network, and YouTube ingest. A loop addresses only what happens when the playlist reaches its end.
- Keep a person responsible for checking the live dashboard and responding to interruptions.
- Write down how to reconnect the encoder and restart the broadcast; protect the stream key while making the recovery steps accessible to the operator.
- Test playlist transitions and audio after changes to files, sources, scenes, or software.
- Decide how you will preserve recordings if a full 24-hour archive is important, because YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours.
No universal computer, internet-speed, UPS, or storage specification is established for this workflow. Choose equipment and a monitoring plan only after accounting for your stream settings, media, operating system, and reliability needs.
