To run a 24/7 jazz café stream on YouTube, put a rights-cleared playlist and a visual into an encoder such as OBS, then send its continuous audio-video feed to a YouTube Live broadcast. The playlist alone is not a live stream: the encoder must keep playing and sending the feed, and the computer, network connection and YouTube ingestion all need to keep working. YouTube supports 24/7 broadcast scenarios, but that is not a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.
Before you build the stream, clear the music rights
Resolve the catalog before configuring a loop. You need permission for the specific recordings and compositions, in the territories where you expect the stream to be available, and for live-stream use. The rights needed depend on the music and license; YouTube’s policy does not determine whether a particular track or agreement covers your use.
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match can replace the live video with a placeholder, interrupt the stream or terminate it. If you are licensed to stream the music, YouTube instructs you to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A license alone may not prevent interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
- Confirm that permission covers the exact recordings and compositions, live streaming, and intended territories.
- Ask the relevant owners whether they use Content ID and request allowlisting for your channel where applicable.
- Keep written permission and allowlisting confirmation accessible to whoever monitors the stream.
- Do not assume that an old composition’s public-domain status clears a modern recording, or that a “royalty-free” label covers YouTube Live everywhere.
YouTube distinguishes live interruptions from Content ID claims on an archived stream: claims on an archived live stream are made after it ends if you choose to archive it. More detail is in YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Prepare the YouTube channel and broadcast
A YouTube broadcast is the viewer-facing event; a stream is the incoming encoder feed and its configuration. In YouTube’s Live Streaming API, those are separate objects. For a playlist-based radio stream, the encoder sends the audio and video to the stream input associated with the broadcast. YouTube’s documentation describes a 24/7 feed scenario, but continuous playback still depends on the whole setup remaining operational. See Understanding broadcasts and streams and the LiveStreams resource documentation.
- Verify the account and enable live streaming. Follow the current prompts in YouTube Studio. Google’s Live Streaming Guide recommends enabling Live ahead of time and verifying the account; an OBS Project community guide says a newly verified account may need to wait 24 hours. Treat that wait as guide text, not a universal promise: check your account’s current Studio status.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, set up the broadcast and choose its audience, visibility and scheduling details. Use the current on-screen controls, as interface labels can change.
- Get the stream key and ingestion details. Copy the stream key and server or ingestion information shown by YouTube Studio into the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Choose a connection protocol your encoder supports. For ordinary content where low latency is useful, YouTube describes RTMPS as a good choice. HLS is available for compatible encoders but has higher latency and requires segment and playlist configuration. A basic playlist stream does not need HLS by default. Consult YouTube’s RTMPS delivery documentation and YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
Build a playlist scene and configure the encoder
Prepare continuous audio and a visual
In OBS, make a scene that supplies both parts of the feed: an audio source that plays the playlist and a video source such as a still image or other licensed visual. YouTube requires an encoder to transmit audio-video, but it does not prescribe a jazz-radio scene or a particular playlist tool. Choose sources that can repeat or advance reliably, and check that the visual is permitted for your use too.

Make the playlist long enough for the intended programming, check the order and transitions, and test what happens when a file ends or the full playlist reaches its end. If your chosen audio source does not repeat automatically, configure the player or source to loop. Do not assume the encoder will restart a playlist by itself.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the appropriate YouTube ingest option, and enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Interface labels may vary by OBS version.
- Confirm the audio source is audible in OBS and that the video canvas shows the intended visual. Watch the audio meter while music plays; adjust levels to avoid clipping or silence.
- Choose output settings that the encoder and connection can sustain. Match the resolution and frame rate to the visual and your intended presentation; a static image does not need a high frame rate for its own sake. The supplied YouTube materials establish protocol and workflow guidance, not one universal bitrate or resolution for every setup, so use the current recommendations and settings shown in YouTube Studio and OBS rather than relying on a fixed value that may not fit your connection.
- Check that the stream key and protocol match the broadcast, then start the encoder and verify that YouTube receives the feed.
The OBS Project community guide, How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio, documents an OBS setup route. Because it is a community guide, confirm the current workflow and labels in YouTube Studio before going live.

Test privately before opening the café
Google recommends testing the complete setup as a private stream before public launch. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room, and let the test run long enough to check the playlist and recovery behavior—not just the first few minutes.
- Listen for clean audio, appropriate levels, silence between tracks and abrupt transitions.
- Confirm the visual stays present and matches the intended channel presentation.
- Verify that playback advances through the playlist and loops when expected.
- Check YouTube’s stream status and health information, and review the encoder for warnings.
- Test what happens after an audio file ends, the playlist finishes, the encoder is stopped and restarted, or the connection briefly drops.
- Confirm that the stream is still private during testing, then schedule or make the intended broadcast public only when ready.
YouTube’s Live Control Room and LiveStreams resource expose stream status and health information. The official live-streaming checklist covers account preparation, private testing and scheduling.

Choose where the encoder runs and who handles failures
| Setup | What it offers | What you must plan for |
|---|---|---|
| OBS on a local computer | A documented desktop software route with local control over the scene and playback. | The computer, power, playlist source and internet connection must remain available. You or someone with access must notice and respond to failures. Hardware requirements depend on the encoder settings and workload; no particular computer model is established as necessary. |
| FFmpeg automation on a VPS | Automation flexibility and a remotely hosted process; a secondary guide describes FFmpeg, restart scripts and a VPS workflow. | You must administer the server, configure and maintain the automation, budget for recurring hosting, and arrange remote monitoring and recovery. This is an implementation option, not a YouTube requirement or a universally best configuration. |
A May 29, 2026 guide from RadioTech Studio discusses an OBS and FFmpeg/VPS approach; it is an implementation example, not an independent product evaluation. The right choice depends on your maintenance tolerance, need for local control, hosting cost and who will respond when something fails.
Monitor the feed and plan recovery
Continuous streaming is a chain: the playlist source must play, the encoder process must run, the network must carry the feed, and YouTube must ingest it. Keep access to encoder logs and YouTube’s live dashboard, assign someone to check the stream, and decide who can restart playback or the encoder and how quickly they can act. YouTube provides health states and issue information, but detailed automatic restart behavior depends on the setup.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder is running, the stream key and ingest settings match the broadcast, and the computer or server has a working connection. Confirm status in the Live Control Room.
- The stream stops between tracks or at the playlist’s end: Check the audio player’s repeat behavior and source configuration. Test a complete cycle privately before launch.
- The stream is interrupted or replaced with a placeholder: Check YouTube’s copyright notices and the playlist rights. Contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting if you are licensed.
- The feed looks or sounds wrong: Check the OBS scene sources, audio meters, output settings and the incoming feed preview. Test again privately after changing settings.
- A process or connection failure leaves the stream down: Review encoder logs and the dashboard’s health information, restart the relevant process or connection, and confirm that the broadcast is receiving the feed again. Your recovery path depends on whether you use a local computer or hosted automation.
