You can’t change OBS’s Video-tab output resolution through the documented workflow while an output is active. To lower it, stop the OBS output, change Settings > Video > Output (Scaled) Resolution, then restart the stream. That creates an interruption; neither YouTube transcoding nor a reconnect guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast or the same viewer session.
Which OBS resolution setting should you change?
For a lower-resolution stream without changing how your scenes are laid out, change Output (Scaled) Resolution. This is the resolution OBS sends to the stream or recording after scaling. For example, OBS describes streaming at 720p from 1080p sources.
Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange sources. Changing the canvas can require resizing or repositioning those sources; changing the output resolution does not have that effect. Leave the canvas at the size that suits your scene unless you have a separate reason to change the composition.
Can you lower it without interrupting the stream?
Not through the documented OBS Video-settings workflow. When an output is active, OBS displays: “Video output is currently active. Please turn off any outputs to change video settings.” You must turn off outputs before changing Video settings, then restart the output.

Plan for a break in the broadcast. YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into formats viewers can watch at different quality levels, but that does not keep OBS connected while you stop and restart its output. The reviewed guidance does not promise that the restart will preserve the same YouTube live event or viewer session.
Plan a lower-resolution transition
- Choose the target configuration. Decide on the lower Output (Scaled) Resolution in advance, and consider whether reducing frame rate would better address the problem. Avoid changing the canvas unless you are prepared to check and adjust scene layouts.
- Test before the production change. Try the intended settings with representative audio and motion. Confirm that the result is usable and that your system handles the stream reliably.
- Schedule the interruption. Pick a maintenance window and, if people depend on the channel, tell them when to expect the break. Prepare any scene adjustments before stopping the live output.
- Stop the OBS output. Turn off the active output or outputs so OBS permits changes to Video settings.
- Change the setting. In OBS, open Settings > Video and select the target under Output (Scaled) Resolution. Keep Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged if you want to preserve the existing composition.
- Restart and check the stream. Start the output again using the intended configuration, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Do not assume the restart continues the previous live event or viewer session.
Would lowering frame rate help instead?
Resolution and frame rate are separate performance levers. OBS says lowering output resolution can reduce encoder load. Lowering frame rate also reduces rendering and encoding work; OBS gives a change from 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working.

OBS notes that 60 fps can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps. The best adjustment depends on your stream content and hardware, so test the actual configuration rather than assuming one change will solve every performance problem.
Can an OBS Profile make the change seamless?
An OBS Profile can save Stream, Video, and Output settings for another configuration. Profiles do not save Scenes, and switching to a profile does not remove the active-output restriction on Video settings. Prepare the profile ahead of time if it helps you organize settings, but still plan to stop outputs before changing the Video configuration.

YouTube checks before and after the restart
- Choose a stream quality that your internet connection can deliver reliably, and test before going live.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to check the restarted stream.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP.
- YouTube’s multiple viewer-quality formats are created from the incoming feed; they do not let you change OBS’s active encoder settings without stopping its output.
Troubleshooting a resolution change
OBS will not let you change Video settings
An output is still active. Turn off outputs, then return to Settings > Video and change Output (Scaled) Resolution.
The sources no longer fit the scene
Check whether you changed Base (Canvas) Resolution rather than only Output (Scaled) Resolution. The canvas defines the composition space, and changing it can require source adjustments.

The stream still struggles after lowering resolution
Test a lower frame rate as another way to reduce rendering and encoding work. If you change the canvas, allow time to correct scene layouts. OBS’s guidance does not establish one universally best combination; results depend on the system and content.
The YouTube stream looks different after restarting
Review YouTube stream health and verify the configuration OBS is sending. YouTube may generate different playback formats for viewers, but its transcoding does not guarantee continuity of the live event or viewer session after an encoder restart.
