How to Loop Worship Videos in OBS for a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop one worship video in OBS, add it to the scene as a Media Source, choose the local file, and turn on Loop in the source properties. For a sequence of clips, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. Before broadcasting, check scene visibility, test the full playback and audio path in YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm that your church has permission for both the recording and video content.

Choose the right OBS source

Setup OBS source What to consider
One video file Media Source Turn on Loop to replay the file after it finishes. Decide whether playback should restart when the source becomes active.
A sequence of video files VLC Video Add the files to a playlist and use Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.

OBS documents these source controls and their default behaviors in its Media Sources guide. Exact labels can vary between software versions.

Loop one worship video with Media Source

  1. Prepare the video file on the computer running OBS, then open the scene where it should appear.
  2. In Sources, select the add button, choose Media Source, and create a source or select an existing one.
  3. In the source properties, choose the local video file and enable Loop. OBS leaves this option off by default.
  4. Set Restart playback when source becomes active according to how you will use scenes. When enabled, playback starts again when the source enters a visible scene; disable it if you want the video to continue from its current position after the source is hidden and shown again.
  5. Position and size the source in the preview. Check the source list to ensure another visible source is not covering it.
  6. Start playback and watch through the end of the file into the next loop. Confirm that the restart is visually acceptable and that audio behaves as intended.

Loop a playlist with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC on the OBS computer. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC for the VLC Video source to be available.
  2. In Sources, add VLC Video to the scene and add the worship clips to its playlist.
  3. Check Loop Playlist, which OBS documents as on by default, and confirm the playlist order and transitions.
  4. Review the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting it when visible. If you switch scenes, test whether this behavior fits the service flow.
  5. Preview the whole playlist through its final clip and return to the first. Check for gaps, unexpected audio, and any source hidden behind another layer.

Connect OBS to YouTube and test before the service

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the encoder stream and obtain the stream key. In OBS, use YouTube’s encoder workflow to connect the stream. Treat the key as private: YouTube describes it as the credential that lets the encoder send a feed to the stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Set output settings for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, your encoder, and the upload capacity available at the streaming location. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 video at 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; the corresponding listed minimums are 4 Mbps and 6 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or connection can sustain the stream.
  3. For RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the output you plan to use.
  4. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Confirm that the video loops, audio is present and balanced, and the feed appears correctly in Live Control Room.
  5. During the broadcast, monitor both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room for playback, audio, and connection issues. Leave upload headroom rather than assuming a recommendation will work on an unstable or shared connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Check copyright and licensing for the complete video

Being able to play a file in OBS does not grant permission to stream it. A worship video may include a song composition, a particular recording, lyrics, and visual material, each of which can have separate rights. Confirm that the permission covers the specific content, YouTube livestream use, and relevant territory.

As a US-specific example, CCLI says its US Streaming License covers qualifying worship songs performed live during online worship. Its Streaming Plus option extends coverage to certain authorized master recordings and multitracks. CCLI also says video content in a stream usually requires permission from the copyright owner; it identifies SongSelect Lyric Videos as an exception for Streaming Plus license holders during a live stream. These terms do not amount to blanket permission for arbitrary commercial music videos, recordings, or visuals. Consult CCLI’s US Streaming License information and the church’s actual agreement. The cited material is US-facing and should not be generalized to other countries. CCLI also notes that participants are responsible for validating covered content and may still encounter platform enforcement.

Troubleshooting common loop problems

  • The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a VLC playlist, check Loop Playlist.
  • The video starts from the beginning after a scene change: Review Restart playback when source becomes active for Media Source. For VLC Video, review its stop-when-hidden and restart-when-visible behavior.
  • VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • The source is not visible in the program output: Check that it is enabled and not obscured by another visible source, then verify its position and size in the scene preview.
  • YouTube does not show a stable feed: Check OBS’s connection and output settings, the available upload capacity, and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. Test with the planned audio and motion before going live.
  • The stream is claimed or blocked: Recheck rights for the song, recording, and visual material separately. A license for one component does not necessarily cover the others, and a license does not guarantee that platform enforcement will not occur.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than operating OBS on a computer at the church, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
