To loop a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live broadcast from a Compute Engine virtual machine, use FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before the file’s -i option. Add -re before the input so FFmpeg reads the file at its native frame rate, then send the output to the stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. This keeps the broadcast running from the VM while the file repeats; it does not make a stream immune to network, process, or platform interruptions.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube says channel verification is required, there must be no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and minimum-age requirements apply. Confirm the current rules for your account at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility page.
- A prerecorded video file accessible to the VM, with audio and video streams suitable for the output you plan to send.
- An FFmpeg installation on the VM and outbound network capacity sufficient for the chosen stream bitrate.
- The stream URL and a stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Reset it if it is exposed.
This guide shows the FFmpeg command pattern, not a tested Compute Engine machine configuration. The right VM depends on whether FFmpeg can copy the file’s existing codecs or must transcode, as well as bitrate, region, network throughput, and runtime. Check current Google Cloud machine options and pricing before choosing an instance.
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a live stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Confirm the channel is eligible and the event settings are correct before connecting an encoder.
- In the stream’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where these values belong. Do not paste the key into public scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control.
- Where available, use the RTMPS ingest URL supplied for the stream. RTMPS encrypts the connection; YouTube explains how to reveal its RTMPS URL and troubleshoot connection details at its RTMPS instructions. Use the actual URL shown for your stream rather than substituting an example host.
- For a scheduled broadcast, allow time for setup and testing. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event.
Prepare the file and choose copy or transcode
There are two broad ways to send the source video. With stream copy, FFmpeg passes through compatible encoded streams without re-encoding them. That uses less CPU, but it only works when the source’s codecs and stream characteristics are accepted by YouTube and the chosen output container/protocol. With transcoding, FFmpeg decodes and re-encodes the media to selected output settings; this adds CPU demand and requires choosing appropriate codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and audio settings.
Check the source file’s audio and video streams before building the command, and match the output to YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, recommends constant bitrate, specifies a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, with AAC or MP3 audio options and a surround-sound caveat. These are platform specifications and recommendations, not a guarantee that every source file will work unchanged.

Build the FFmpeg loop command
The essential options are -stream_loop -1 and -re, both placed before the input they affect. FFmpeg documents -1 as infinite looping and -re as reading at native frame rate. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for option scope and behavior.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR-STREAM-URL/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"
Replace the file path and destination with the actual values for your VM and YouTube stream. Keep the complete destination private because it contains the stream key. The example uses stream copy; it is appropriate only if the source streams are compatible with YouTube ingest. If not, replace the copy settings with an intentional transcode configuration that follows YouTube’s current encoder table. Do not assume a particular bitrate or codec is right for every source.

Why option placement matters
-stream_loop -1 is an input option, so it belongs before the -i for the file to be repeated. Likewise, -re belongs before that file input when it should be read at native frame rate. Putting options after the input may apply them differently or not to the intended input.
Protect the stream key
A stream key embedded directly in a shell command may be visible in shell history or process listings, depending on how the command is launched and the system configuration. Restrict VM access, avoid sharing terminal output, and use an appropriately protected configuration or secret-handling method for long-running production use. If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.

Start, preview, and publish
- Start FFmpeg on the VM using the prepared command. Watch its output for connection errors, repeated input reads, and encoding or muxing failures.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming feed and preview. Check both picture and sound, as well as YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Before making the stream public, confirm the video is framed and paced as intended, audio is present and intelligible, and the live event has the correct title, visibility, and audience settings.
- Monitor the VM process and outbound network while the broadcast runs. YouTube recommends reserving 20% of available upload bandwidth beyond the stream’s bitrate and notes that shared connections can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. Its guidance is at Streaming tips.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder setup page. That rule is not a promise of uninterrupted playback or indefinite retention. Plan for what viewers should see if the stream ends, and verify the current archive behavior and limits before relying on a long broadcast.
Settings that affect stability and quality
| Setting | Guidance | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Use the RTMPS URL provided by Live Control Room when supported. | RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection; the exact host and port must match the supplied stream URL. |
| Rate control | YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding. | A stable bitrate makes it easier to plan network capacity. |
| Keyframe interval | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. | Keyframes affect ingest compatibility and playback behavior. |
| Video/audio codecs | YouTube’s current settings page lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for video and AAC or MP3 for audio, with a surround-sound caveat. | Match the chosen output to the platform’s current accepted settings and the capabilities of the source and encoder. |
| 720p at 30 fps bitrate | YouTube’s current help table retrieved in 2026 lists 2 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps maximum for its standard codec row; for H.265/AV1 it lists 3 Mbps recommended and 8 Mbps maximum. | These are YouTube’s codec-specific figures, not universal targets. Check the live table for the codec and resolution you use. |
| Network headroom | YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth room above the stream bitrate. | This is planning guidance, not a reliability guarantee; shared links may reduce available capacity. |
YouTube transcodes incoming live video into multiple playback formats. Choose output settings for a stable, compliant ingest rather than trying to force every viewer to receive the source’s exact encoding.

Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg connects but YouTube shows no preview
- Check that the destination uses the stream URL and key currently displayed for the selected event, with no missing characters or accidental whitespace.
- Confirm the command reaches the intended RTMPS endpoint and that the source produces valid audio/video streams.
- Look for FFmpeg errors in the VM output, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages for an ingest or format issue.
Connection or TLS errors
- Use the RTMPS URL revealed in Live Control Room, not a guessed endpoint. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says to use the correct
rtmpshost and, if necessary, specify port 443. - Check that the VM can make outbound connections and that local firewall or network rules are not blocking the destination.
Video stutters or stream health degrades
- Compare actual stream bitrate with the VM’s available outbound capacity. Leave the 20% bandwidth margin YouTube recommends and account for any traffic sharing the network.
- If transcoding, check whether the selected VM has enough CPU for the chosen resolution and frame rate. No single Compute Engine machine type is established as suitable for every source and output.
- If the source is already compatible, stream copy can avoid re-encoding work; if it is not compatible, use a deliberate transcode rather than relying on an unsupported passthrough.
The video does not loop or FFmpeg exits
- Verify that
-stream_loop -1appears before the correct-iinput. FFmpeg’s documentation defines that value as infinite looping. - Check whether the VM process was stopped, the input file became unavailable, or FFmpeg reported a decode or output error. A VM-hosted process still needs operational monitoring and recovery if the process or instance stops.
The picture or audio is missing or wrong
- Inspect the source’s streams and verify that the selected output maps usable video and audio.
- Check compatibility against YouTube’s current codec and bitrate recommendations. If copying the source does not produce a valid ingest, configure a transcode that fits the platform’s specifications.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Having a file on your computer or VM does not by itself establish permission to broadcast it. Before going live, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, narration, images, and any other material in the recording. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility, copyright enforcement, and channel rules can affect whether a stream is allowed to remain live. Repeating a recording also does not exempt it from YouTube’s policies; review current platform requirements and obtain appropriate rights before streaming.
Costs and operational trade-offs
A Compute Engine approach has at least two distinct cost considerations: the VM’s runtime and the resource level needed for the workload. Transcoding generally demands more CPU than passing through compatible encoded streams; a higher outbound bitrate also changes network requirements. The total depends on instance choice, region, duration, and current cloud pricing. No specific machine type or price is established here, so use Google Cloud’s current pricing and configuration information for an estimate before leaving a VM running continuously.

Running FFmpeg on a VM gives you control over the command and media pipeline, but you are responsible for maintaining the instance, process, key security, monitoring, and recovery. A process that loops a file is not automatically a fault-tolerant broadcast system.
