You can send prerecorded video to YouTube Live with GStreamer, but repeating playback, encoding and muxing, and network delivery are separate jobs. For one video file, arrange a verified playback loop in your application or chosen GStreamer implementation; do not assume multifilesrc loop=true repeats a single video. Then encode and mux the audio/video into a YouTube-compatible stream and send it to the current ingest address and stream name/key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

How the pipeline fits together

A live pipeline needs to handle three stages:

  1. Playback: read the recording and repeat it when playback reaches the end.
  2. Encoding and muxing: convert decoded audio and video to formats YouTube accepts and package them for delivery.
  3. Ingest: send the resulting stream over the protocol and endpoint configured for your YouTube stream.

Keeping these responsibilities distinct helps diagnose problems: a playback boundary glitch is different from a negotiation or encoder error, and both differ from YouTube not receiving data.

Choose a looping method for the source

One video file

The official GStreamer references reviewed here do not establish a universal one-line gst-launch-1.0 command that loops any single video file cleanly. Use an application-level playback controller that detects end-of-stream, seeks back to the beginning, and resumes playback while preserving a continuous live timeline, or select a specific element/plugin whose single-file repeat behavior is documented for your installed version.

Do not assume a loop is seamless. Seeking or restarting can introduce a timestamp discontinuity or a brief audio/video glitch unless the playback and muxing design handles the boundary. Verify the behavior with your actual file, plugin set, and output pipeline before relying on it for a long-running broadcast.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A numbered sequence of files or image frames

GStreamer documents multifilesrc for sequentially named files. Its loop property repeats the sequence from the beginning after all files have been read; the documented example uses numbered PNG images. That supports a sequence-based workflow, not a general claim that the same property loops any single video file. See the GStreamer multifilesrc reference.

Build the encode-and-delivery path

The official GStreamer rtmpsink reference demonstrates the output shape: FLV-compatible encoded media, flvmux, then rtmpsink. Its example uses a test pattern and a localhost server, so it is not a ready-to-run YouTube command. It also uses ffenc_flv, which you should not assume is installed in every current GStreamer build.

For a real source, replace the test source with your decoded recording, choose encoders available in your installation that match YouTube’s current ingest requirements, mux the branches appropriately, and configure the sink with your stream’s current URL and key. The particular element names and caps depend on the operating system, distribution, and installed plugins; this documentation example has not been tested as a YouTube pipeline.

Decode and negotiate media for your installation

GStreamer’s handy-elements tutorial describes uridecodebin and decodebin as ways to construct a decode path automatically. Its tools tutorial illustrates separate decoded audio and video branches and a transcoding example, but that MP4 example is not a YouTube RTMP output recipe.

When elements cannot agree on media format, rate, or dimensions, conversion elements may be needed: videoconvert, videoscale, and videorate for video; audioconvert and audioresample for audio. Confirm that the source decodes, the required encoder and muxer exist, and the negotiated caps are what you intend. GStreamer plugin availability varies, so there is no portable command guaranteed to work unchanged on every platform.

Configure YouTube ingest securely

  1. Get the endpoint for this stream. In YouTube Live Control Room or the YouTube Live Streaming API configuration, use the primary ingestion address and stream name provided for the stream. Do not copy an endpoint from an old tutorial.
  2. Match your output to the selected protocol. YouTube documents RTMP, including RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion. For the RTMP pipeline described here, use an RTMP-capable sink such as rtmpsink with the URL and stream name/key configured for your stream. The API may present the URL and stream name separately or in a combined form such as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat the stream key as a credential. Avoid putting it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or shared command history. Use a private configuration mechanism appropriate to your environment.
  4. Check YouTube’s ingest status. The API’s stream status distinguishes active (data is being received), inactive (not receiving), and error; health states such as good and ok offer additional ingest-side signals. These help separate a delivery problem from a local decode or encode failure.

RTMP or HLS?

Choice What matters for this workflow
RTMP/RTMPS Continuous streaming transport; use a compatible encoded FLV output and the stream-specific address and name/key supplied by YouTube. The GStreamer rtmpsink reference documents this general output shape.
HLS Segmented delivery with higher latency than continuous RTMP, according to YouTube’s HLS guidance. YouTube specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte range, and HTTPS POST/PUT. It is a distinct transport setup, not a setting to apply to a generic RTMP sink. The guidance lists H.264 and HEVC video and AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio support for HLS.

Choose HLS only when you intend to implement its segmented protocol requirements and your tools support them. Do not treat an RTMP pipeline as an HLS sender merely by changing its URL.

Troubleshoot by pipeline stage

  • No decoded audio or video: check the source URI, file readability, and decode path. Use uridecodebin or decodebin where appropriate, and verify the required demuxer and decoder plugins are installed.
  • Negotiation or linking errors: inspect verbose pipeline output and negotiated caps. Add the necessary conversion or rate/size adapters, then confirm each encoder and muxer accepts the resulting format.
  • Pipeline runs, but YouTube reports no incoming data: compare the configured sink location with the current stream-specific ingest URL and stream name/key. Check YouTube’s stream status to distinguish an inactive connection from a local media error.
  • YouTube reports an error or poor health: inspect both the encoder/pipeline output and the stream’s configured protocol and ingest details. Do not assume that a successful local pipeline means YouTube is receiving a valid stream.
  • A glitch occurs at the loop boundary: treat it as a playback/timestamp continuity issue. Test the selected seek-and-resume or repeat implementation with the actual recording and verify audio and video across the boundary.
  • The pipeline stops unexpectedly: examine local GStreamer errors separately from YouTube ingest status. A network interruption, invalid endpoint/key, decode failure, or encoder/muxer failure requires a different fix; the status and local logs help narrow the stage.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Having a technically valid stream does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the recording. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for copyright and reused content before building a recurring channel around prerecorded material. A continuous loop does not itself grant rights or guarantee that a channel meets YouTube’s eligibility or monetization policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than managing a GStreamer pipeline, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
