To make a one-hour MP4 from a local nature ambience video, run:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -t 01:00:00 -map 0 -c copy output.mp4
Replace the filenames and duration as needed. The input-loop option repeats the source; -t limits the output to one hour. This creates repeated footage, but does not make the join between the end and beginning seamless.
Loop a clip into a finite video file
- Check your FFmpeg build: run
ffmpeg -version. Ubuntu versions ship different builds; the Ubuntu Jammy manual, for example, identifies package build7:4.4.2-0ubuntu0.22.04.1. That version is a Jammy-specific reference, not a claim about other Ubuntu releases. Consultman ffmpegon your machine if an option or encoder name differs. FFmpeg command-line documentation notes that its regenerated online docs correspond to the newest revision and directs users of older revisions to installed documentation. - Run the loop command: put
-stream_loop -1before the input’s-i, because it is an input option.-1means repeat infinitely;0means do not loop.-t 01:00:00stops the output after one hour.-map 0requests all input streams, and-c copyasks FFmpeg to copy them without decoding and re-encoding. See the documented input and duration options. - Review the output: play
output.mp4and check the picture, audio, subtitles and other streams you intended to retain. The command requests all streams, but the source streams and destination container still need to be compatible.
Choose streamcopy or re-encoding
Streamcopy with -c copy avoids another encode and is usually the simpler choice when the source streams can be placed in the chosen output container. It is not a universal guarantee that every input can be copied into MP4. If FFmpeg reports an incompatible stream or container, remove -c copy and select suitable encoders for your installed build and target playback device. Re-encoding takes longer and can introduce another lossy generation, but allows format conversion when needed. Check the FFmpeg FAQ for documented format and stream handling guidance.
Keep playback running until you stop it
For playback that should continue indefinitely, keep -stream_loop -1 before -i and omit -t, directing FFmpeg to the output or player workflow appropriate to your setup. Do not write an unbounded run to an ordinary output file without a stopping condition: the file can continue growing. The correct output or player invocation depends on the target display and installed configuration, so there is no single command that is safe for every setup.

Make the loop point less noticeable
Looping repeats the clip; it does not add a crossfade or repair a discontinuity. Inspect the end-to-start transition in both picture and sound. A sudden camera jump, changed light or weather, abrupt ambience shift, click, or mismatch between audio and video duration can make a repeated clip obvious. If the join is distracting, edit the source boundary or prepare a transition. For multiple segments, FFmpeg documents concatenation approaches, but arbitrary files cannot necessarily be joined without matching stream properties or preparation (FFmpeg FAQ).
Troubleshoot common problems
- The clip plays only once: confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the relevant-i. The loop setting applies to an input. - The output never finishes: an infinite input loop needs an output stopping condition for a finite render. Add an appropriate
-tduration. - FFmpeg rejects streamcopy or MP4: the streams may not be compatible with the selected container. Remove
-c copyand choose encoders and a container suited to your source and playback target. - Audio or subtitles are missing or unexpected:
-map 0requests all input streams, which may include tracks you did not intend or streams the output container cannot accept. Inspect the input streams and specify mappings appropriate to your file if needed. - The repeated section clicks or jumps: the loop option does not smooth the boundary. Edit the end and beginning or use a suitable transition workflow.
- An option or encoder is unavailable: check
ffmpeg -versionandman ffmpeg; Ubuntu’s packaged version may differ from the current online manual.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube ambience stream rather than a finite file or a local playback loop, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos in the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial.
