Turn off shuffle if you want the files to play in their listed order. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Choose the right OBS source
| Playback need | OBS source | Repeat setting | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| One prerecorded video | Media Source | Loop | Repeats that individual file. |
| Several prerecorded videos | VLC Video Source | Loop Playlist | Repeats the playlist when the final file finishes. VLC must be installed; match VLC’s architecture to OBS. |
For multiple videos, VLC Video Source is the playlist option. OBS documents that its Loop Playlist setting restarts playback after the source runs out of media files, and that shuffle controls whether files are randomized or played in list order. OBS: Media Sources
Build a repeating playlist in OBS
- Prepare the files. Put the videos in a stable local folder and decide their playback order. Avoid moving or renaming files after you add them, or OBS may no longer find them.
- Add the playlist source. In the OBS scene’s Sources dock, select the + button and choose VLC Video Source. If that option is missing, install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. OBS: Sources Guide
- Add the videos. Open the VLC Video Source properties and add the desired files to its playlist. Arrange them in the order you want. Leave Loop Playlist on to repeat the full sequence; turn off Shuffle Playlist for listed order.
- Check visibility behavior. Set the VLC source to continue playback if it should keep playing when hidden or when you switch scenes. The available behavior can also pause or stop playback while the source is not visible. OBS: Media Sources
- Fit the video into the scene. Select the source in the preview and position or resize it. OBS displays sources in layer order: place titles, logos, or other overlays above the video if they should remain visible. OBS: Sources Guide
- Test the whole sequence. Start playback and confirm that video and audio work, the files advance in the expected order, and the last file returns to the first. A short test is useful before relying on the scene for a long run. OBS: Quick Start Guide
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the stream and copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream connection settings. YouTube describes the key as functioning like a password and address: keep it private, and do not include it in screenshots, overlays, or public notes. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
- Choose output settings for your setup. Select a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate supported by your encoder and sustained upload connection. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency; it says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the supported settings that match your chosen resolution and frame rate. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- Start a test and check stream health. Preview the feed in Live Control Room before depending on it. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and movement to the intended broadcast, and monitoring stream health while live. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
Allow for upload headroom
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. Use sustained upload capacity—not just a plan’s advertised maximum—as the practical constraint. If the connection is unstable or the feed reports problems, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
Plan for a 24/7 stream and its archive
A playlist can repeat in OBS, but YouTube does not guarantee a complete replay of a continuous broadcast. YouTube says live streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the output matters, record a local archive and verify that the recording is complete; YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive backup. Before leaving a stream unattended, test the playlist, audio, scene visibility behavior, and YouTube feed for long enough to catch transition or connection problems. OBS performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; if encoding overload occurs, simplify the scene or lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- The VLC Video Source option is missing: Install VLC and restart OBS if needed. For 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. OBS: Media Sources
- The playlist ends instead of repeating: Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist. If you are using a single-file Media Source instead, enable its Loop property.
- Videos play in a different order each time: Turn off Shuffle Playlist so files stay in their listed order.
- Playback pauses or stops after changing scenes: Review the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour setting and choose behavior that allows playback to continue while the source is hidden.
- The picture freezes, stutters, or OBS reports encoding overload: Check whether the source is still visible and the playlist is advancing. If the output is choppy or encoding is overloaded, reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or reduce demanding sources; test again. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the encoder settings and sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe frequency (no more than 4 seconds), and upload bandwidth with 20% headroom above total stream bitrate.
