To loop a folder of gaming VODs into a YouTube Live stream, make an explicit playlist, confirm its files are compatible with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, then use -stream_loop -1 and -re to repeat and pace the playlist. Encode to YouTube’s recommended format and bitrate, send it to the RTMPS address from Live Control Room, and verify the preview and stream health before clicking Go live. FFmpeg does not automatically find and order every video in a folder; the playlist defines the sequence.
1. Prepare an explicit playlist
The concat demuxer reads a text file of file directives and presents the listed inputs sequentially. Create the list deliberately so the order is predictable. For example, save this as /srv/vods/playlist.txt:

file '/srv/vods/part-02.mp4'
file '/srv/vods/part-03.mp4'The ffconcat version 1.0 header is optional when you explicitly specify -f concat. Absolute paths work with -safe 0; use that option only with a playlist you control. A safer arrangement is a playlist beside the videos that uses relative paths while retaining safe path handling. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Do not create the list with an unchecked wildcard or assume filesystem order is the order you want. Review it for missing files, duplicates, unrelated media, or an accidental entry for the playlist itself. The Linux account that runs FFmpeg must be able to read every listed file.

2. Check that the VODs can be concatenated
The concat demuxer joins packets; it is not a general-purpose converter for arbitrary videos. FFmpeg requires the inputs to have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in resolution, frame rate, audio layout, codec, or stream count can cause errors or bad transitions.
Inspect representative files
Use ffprobe on each file and compare stream count, codecs, time bases, resolution, frame rate, audio layout, and duration. For example:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format /srv/vods/part-01.mp4Repeat for the other playlist entries. Also check the actual durations and file readability. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and subsequent files follow it; unequal stream lengths or inaccurate duration information can introduce gaps or artifacts.
Choose the right concatenation method

If the files do not match, either normalize them to compatible properties before building the playlist or use a filter-and-re-encode workflow. The FFmpeg FAQ on joining video files distinguishes the filter route for re-encoding from packet concatenation. No single flag reliably reconciles every mixed VOD collection.

3. Loop and pace the playlist with FFmpeg
Once the playlist is ready, run a command like this from a Linux shell:

-f flv 'rtmps://SERVER_FROM_LIVE_CONTROL_ROOM/STREAM_PATH/STREAM_KEY'-rereads the files at their native rate instead of sending them as fast as the server can process them.-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it appears before the playlist’s-i.-f concatselects the concat demuxer.-safe 0permits absolute paths in this controlled playlist.-c:v libx264selects H.264 encoding;-c:a aacselects AAC audio. The command outputs FLV for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.-r 30sets the output frame rate. At 30 fps,-g 60gives a two-second GOP; set the GOP/keyframe interval to about two seconds if you choose another frame rate.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeare example rate-control settings, not a universal YouTube preset.
Replace the destination with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key secret. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build has the selected encoder and supports RTMPS; FFmpeg’s manuals are regenerated nightly, so consult the current FFmpeg documentation or your installed build’s ffmpeg -h output for version-specific behavior.

4. Match encoder settings to YouTube’s ingest guidance
The figures below are YouTube Help recommendations for H.264, checked 2026-10-03; they are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular server or connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s table can change, so check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before broadcasting.

- YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- For stereo AAC audio, YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- YouTube recommends CBR. The example command’s bitrate settings are a starting point, not a substitute for matching the bitrate to your chosen resolution and frame rate.
- YouTube’s broader encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. This command specifically uses H.264, AAC, and RTMPS/FLV ingest.
Leave upload headroom rather than setting the video bitrate equal to the full measured upload capacity. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test the actual server connection and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.

5. Connect in YouTube Live Control Room and start the broadcast
- In YouTube Live Control Room, get the stream URL and key for the broadcast. Use the RTMPS endpoint YouTube provides where available; YouTube recommends RTMPS as encrypted ingest.
- Put that exact destination in the FFmpeg command, start FFmpeg, and keep the process running on the server.
- Wait for the incoming stream preview. Check the stream-health messages and confirm the picture and audio are behaving as expected.
- When the preview and health checks are satisfactory, start the broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube’s streaming with an encoder guidance covers the control-room workflow.
Before relying on a long-running broadcast, test a representative section of the playlist. Monitor CPU usage, upload capacity, and YouTube’s health messages; performance depends on the server, input files, and connection, so no single command can promise real-time operation for every setup.
6. Troubleshoot playlist transitions and ingest errors
- FFmpeg says a file cannot be opened: check spelling, absolute or relative path handling, permissions, and readability as the Linux account running FFmpeg.
- The wrong clips play or the playlist repeats unexpectedly: inspect the text file line by line for order, duplicates, unrelated entries, or a playlist/output accidentally included in the list.
- Concat errors, freezes, or glitches at a transition: compare stream layouts, codecs, time bases, resolution, frame rate, and audio properties. Normalize the files or use a concat filter and re-encode rather than applying unverified flags.
- There is a gap or artifact between clips: check for unequal stream lengths and inaccurate duration information as well as property mismatches.
- YouTube reports a bitrate or keyframe problem: verify output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and GOP duration against YouTube’s current table; a 60-frame GOP is two seconds only at 30 fps.
- RTMPS will not connect: use the exact RTMPS address, path, and port supplied in Live Control Room, and check that the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
- The server falls behind or the stream drops: monitor CPU and network upload during a representative test. Reduce output demands or move to a more capable server if it cannot sustain the chosen encode and upload rate.
7. Account for rights and YouTube channel rules
A technical loop does not grant permission to rebroadcast a game, soundtrack, commentary, or other material. Use VODs you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before going live. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist; it is a checklist, not a substitute for rights clearance or YouTube’s rules.
Also consider whether a continuous stream built from previously uploaded material fits your channel’s obligations. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and policies can change; check the rules applicable to your account and content rather than assuming that a technically valid stream is automatically eligible for every YouTube feature or monetization program.
