To broadcast a prerecorded gaming video repeatedly as a YouTube Live stream, loop the authorized video in VLC, send its playback into a compatible encoder, and configure that encoder with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. VLC is the playback source in this workflow; it is not, by itself, the verified YouTube streaming connection. If you only want a video to repeat while you watch it on YouTube, use YouTube’s Loop control instead—that does not create a live broadcast.
First choose what you mean by “loop”

Loop a YouTube video for your own viewing
On desktop, right-click the video player and choose Loop. For a playlist, use the loop control in the playlist box. YouTube documents a Repeat control for TV and console playback as well. These controls repeat playback for the viewer; they do not send a live stream.
What VLC does in a YouTube Live setup
YouTube describes encoder-based streaming for gameplay and overlays. The encoder—not the YouTube player’s Loop control—sends the feed. Its YouTube configuration uses a stream URL and stream key supplied through YouTube’s live-stream settings. VLC can serve as the local player for a prerecorded file or playlist, but the exact way to route playback into an encoder depends on the VLC version and the encoder. The current official VLC documentation landing page does not establish a specific desktop click path or command for this particular setup, so avoid relying on unverified menu names or flags.
Broadcast a looped gaming video: workflow
- Confirm you can stream. Check YouTube Live access in your account before preparing the broadcast. YouTube’s listed eligibility conditions include channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; the help page also states streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements for the current policy.
- Clear the rights first. Make sure you have the necessary rights for the game footage, soundtrack, in-game music, overlays, and any other third-party material. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Read YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.
- Prepare the source video or playlist. Keep the files you intend to play locally accessible, and decide whether you want one file to repeat or a playlist to cycle. Use media you are authorized to broadcast. Confirm playback and audio in VLC before connecting the broadcast.
- Set VLC to repeat the intended material. Enable the appropriate repeat behavior in your VLC version for the file or playlist. Because the official documentation reviewed does not establish current exact controls for this specific use, check the documentation for your installed version rather than assuming a particular menu label.
- Route VLC playback into a compatible encoder. Configure the encoder to capture or receive VLC’s playback as its video and audio source. The routing method varies by operating system, VLC version, and encoder; verify both picture and sound in the encoder preview. YouTube lists OBS as open-source live-streaming software, but that listing is not a guarantee of a particular VLC routing procedure.
- Get YouTube’s ingest settings. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the compatible encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s controls.
- Check the preview, then start. Confirm YouTube receives the intended video and audio before beginning the public broadcast. Start the encoder feed and follow the Live Control Room status and preview. Keep an eye on the broadcast for interruptions or rights notices.
Keeping a prerecorded stream running continuously
A local setup requires the computer and the playback-to-encoder chain to stay running for as long as you want to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS as open-source live-streaming software and Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded-video streams. Troubleshooting the broadcast
- YouTube receives no feed: Check that the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the encoder is receiving VLC’s output. Confirm the key was not replaced in YouTube after you copied it.
- Video plays locally but not in the encoder preview: The playback has not been routed to the encoder’s selected source. Recheck the source and routing method for your specific VLC and encoder versions.
- Picture arrives but sound does not: Check the encoder’s selected audio input and confirm VLC playback is reaching it. Verify audio in the encoder preview before going live.
- The file stops instead of repeating: Recheck VLC’s repeat setting for the active file or playlist, then test a complete playback cycle before broadcasting.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Review the Live Control Room notice and resolve the detected third-party-content issue. If you have a license, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs Content ID allowlisting; permission may not automatically prevent an automated interruption.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Replace or reset it in YouTube, then update the encoder with the new key. Never include it in a public video, screenshot, or support post.
