How to Loop an MP4 From a USB Drive to YouTube Live With OBS

Connect the USB drive, add its MP4 as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, and connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream. Follow the checks for scheduled broadcasts, stream settings and playback problems.

To loop a USB-hosted MP4 on YouTube Live with OBS, connect the drive, add the file as an OBS Media Source, enable Loop, then send OBS’s output to a YouTube encoder stream using its server URL and stream key. Keep the drive attached and available for the entire broadcast. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and confirm its preview in YouTube Live Control Room before clicking Go live.

Before you start: check channel eligibility and prepare the file

  • YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. Its current help page also states a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements if you are unsure whether the channel is ready.
  • Connect the USB drive and make sure the MP4 opens from it. Leave the drive attached and mounted throughout the stream; if it is disconnected or its mounted path changes, OBS may no longer be able to access the selected file. This is a practical consequence of using local media, not a promise that OBS will recover playback automatically.
  • Use a representative test file and check that its audio and video play as expected before scheduling an important broadcast. If uninterrupted playback matters, test the actual drive, USB port, computer power settings and the full playback duration.

Add the MP4 to OBS and enable looping

  1. Open OBS and create or select the scene that will contain the video.
  2. In the Sources area, select + and choose Media Source. Give the source a recognizable name if prompted.
  3. In the Media Source properties, select the local-file option, browse to the MP4 on the USB drive and select it.
  4. Turn on Loop. OBS’s built-in Media Source supports MP4 files, and Loop is off by default; with it enabled, the file plays again after playback completes. Confirm the preview shows the video and that its audio is reaching the OBS mixer.

For one repeatedly played video, Media Source is the simplest choice. If you need several files in a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source instead. VLC must be installed for that source type to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Add the files to the source; its Loop Playlist option is enabled by default. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for source behavior and options.

Set up the YouTube encoder stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then create a stream or schedule one in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen capture, recording or public post. You can review the official workflow in YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter or select the server and stream key. If OBS presents a connect-account option instead, use the stream-key workflow when you need to enter the specific key from the scheduled YouTube stream.
  4. Apply the settings and return to the scene preview. Check the framing, playback and audio before sending the stream.

Choose encoder settings your connection can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. Set the encoder to a codec and bitrate supported by your setup, then choose the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. There is no single bitrate that fits every stream; the value must also be sustainable on your upload connection.

YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom, since other devices and shared network use can reduce the capacity available to the stream. Test with the video and audio you intend to use, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health and sound throughout the broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Start, verify and end the live stream

  1. In OBS, select Start Streaming.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check both video and audio and review stream health.
  3. If the stream is scheduled, select Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not replace the scheduled-stream go-live step.
  4. When finished, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its encoder guide for the current end-of-stream workflow.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The MP4 does not appear or will not play: confirm the USB drive is connected and mounted, and browse to the file again in Media Source properties. Try opening the MP4 outside OBS to confirm the file itself is accessible.
  • The video plays once and stops: reopen the Media Source properties and make sure Loop is enabled. The built-in source does not loop by default.
  • A playlist source is missing: install VLC, then restart OBS if needed. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube receives no feed: check that OBS has the correct server URL and stream key for the intended stream, then confirm OBS is streaming and YouTube Live Control Room is open to that stream. Never share the key while troubleshooting.
  • The scheduled stream has a preview but is not public: in Live Control Room, select Go live after the preview is ready.
  • The feed drops frames or quality fluctuates: check OBS and YouTube stream health, reduce the bitrate or resolution to a value YouTube lists for your codec and frame rate, and retest with at least 20% upload headroom. Other activity on a shared network can compete for upload capacity.
  • Playback stops after a long run: check the USB connection, mount status, computer sleep or power settings and OBS status. The USB workflow depends on the computer and local file remaining available; it does not itself guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

Before broadcasting a documentary or other recorded video, confirm you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, soundtrack, stills and any third-party material it contains. A live stream is still a public use of the material; looping it does not make copyrighted content permissible. Also consider YouTube’s monetization rules separately: permission to use a video does not by itself establish that a channel’s reused-content approach qualifies for monetization. Review YouTube’s current rules for the channel and content before scheduling. Streamers can use this copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
