How to Loop a Video Playlist to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS

Synology Surveillance Station’s YouTube broadcast is for camera feeds, not video playlists. Here’s how to build a separate NAS-to-YouTube encoder workflow and test it safely.

You can loop videos stored on a Synology NAS on YouTube Live, but not with Surveillance Station’s documented Live Broadcast feature: that feature sends camera feeds, not local video-file playlists. To broadcast files, use a separate encoder that reads the NAS videos, plays them in a loop, and sends a continuous stream to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Whether the encoder can run on your NAS depends on its model, DSM version, codecs, and processing capacity.

Can Synology Surveillance Station stream a video file playlist?

Synology documents Surveillance Station Live Broadcast as a way to send live camera streams to YouTube. Its setup asks you to provide YouTube’s RTMP path and account key, then select a camera and stream profile. Synology says this feature supports H.264 video. It does not document selecting NAS video files or looping a playlist, so do not treat Live Broadcast as a file-playback tool. Synology Surveillance Station technical specifications and Synology’s Live Broadcast help describe the camera workflow.

How do I loop a video playlist to YouTube Live from a Synology NAS?

Separate the job into two parts: a player reads and repeats the video files, and an encoder sends the resulting live-compatible audio and video to YouTube. You can run that encoder on the NAS if the specific model and DSM release support a suitable implementation and it can sustain the workload. If not, run it on a computer that reads the files from a NAS shared folder.

  1. Check that the channel can go live. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. First-time live-streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup help; complete activation before relying on a scheduled broadcast.
  2. Choose where the encoder will run. For an encoder process on the NAS, first verify that your NAS model and DSM version support the required software or container capability. Confirm the device can decode the source files and encode or pass through a compatible output continuously. The official guidance cited here does not verify a particular container image, command, NAS model, or playlist behavior, so test your chosen setup rather than assuming compatibility. A separate computer can reduce encoding load on the NAS, but it must stay powered on and maintain access to the shared folder.
  3. Prepare the playlist and playback behavior. Make a playlist from the files on the NAS using a file-capable player or encoder. Configure it to move through the items in the intended order and repeat at the end. Check that the files’ video and audio codecs, frame rates, aspect ratios, and audio levels work with the output settings. If the playlist mixes formats, test transitions as well as individual files.
  4. Get the YouTube destination details. In the selected stream’s settings in YouTube Studio, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s destination fields. YouTube’s setup flow uses both values to connect the encoder. Keep the key private: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or forum post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  5. Set an output YouTube can ingest. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant-bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Match resolution and frame rate to the source, encoder capacity, and available upload bandwidth rather than choosing a setting the connection cannot sustain. YouTube’s encoder settings include bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate; for example, its H.264 720p at 30 fps row lists 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended. That is an example from the table, not a universal setting.
  6. Start privately and check stream health. Send a representative test with both audio and visible motion. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and warnings, check that audio stays synchronized, and confirm the playlist advances from the last item back to the first. Test a planned encoder restart and verify that the stream reconnects before depending on unattended operation. YouTube’s setup help describes starting the encoder and monitoring the incoming stream.
  7. Go public only after the full loop works. Set the stream’s visibility and start time in YouTube Studio as appropriate. Stay within YouTube’s copyright rules: having a file on your NAS does not by itself establish that you have permission to stream it. Review the rights for the video, music, images, and other included material. For documentaries, check licenses and any third-party footage or soundtrack terms before broadcasting.

Should the encoder run on the NAS or a computer?

Setup Strength Limitation What to verify
Encoder process on the NAS, potentially in a supported container Reads files locally and can run without a desktop computer being left on. Model and DSM compatibility, real-time encoding capacity, and playlist behavior are not established for your device without checking and testing. CPU or integrated graphics capability, codec support, whether the required container feature is available, restart behavior, and monitoring.
Encoder on a separate computer reading a NAS share Moves encoding work off the NAS and allows use of desktop streaming software. The computer must remain powered on and sustain access to the shared files. Network throughput, reliability, encoder controls, power use, and how quickly you can recover from a failure.

Choose based on the exact NAS, DSM version, file formats, and upload connection. A NAS’s ability to store and serve a file does not prove it can encode that file in real time for a continuous stream. If the encoder cannot keep up, test a lower resolution or frame rate, use compatible files that need less processing, or move encoding to a computer.

Settings and limits to plan around

Bitrate, resolution, and frame rate

Use the row in YouTube’s bitrate table that matches your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then ensure your upload connection has enough sustained capacity for the stream. A peak speed test is not proof of stable bandwidth for a long broadcast. Leave headroom for normal network variation and any other traffic sharing the connection.

Keyframes and transport

Use a two-second keyframe interval where possible and do not exceed YouTube’s stated four-second maximum. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it and YouTube’s current ingest settings offer it. Synology’s camera broadcast documentation is narrower: it specifies H.264 for that Surveillance Station feature, which is separate from the file-playlist workflow.

Archives and long broadcasts

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours, do not rely on a single complete YouTube archive. If preserving the full program matters, plan separate archive segments or a local recording, and verify that the recording method has enough storage.

Troubleshooting a NAS-to-YouTube playlist stream

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key, that the stream is selected in Live Control Room, and that outbound network access is available. Replace the key if it may have been exposed.
  • The encoder starts but YouTube reports a stream-health warning: Compare the actual output codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s encoder guidance. Reduce output demands if the encoder or connection cannot sustain them.
  • Video stutters or the playlist falls behind: Check whether the NAS can decode and encode the source in real time and whether the network share or upload connection is saturated. Try a less demanding output or shift encoding to a separate computer.
  • The playlist stops after one item: Check the player’s repeat or loop setting and confirm the playlist itself contains the intended files. Test the end-to-start transition before going public.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: Confirm the encoder is selecting the intended audio track and using a supported audio codec. Test representative files individually; mixed source formats can expose problems not seen in a single-file test.
  • The broadcast does not resume after a restart: Verify how the encoder process is launched after a NAS or computer restart, whether it can reconnect to the share, and whether it uses the active YouTube key and destination. Test recovery deliberately rather than assuming it.
  • The stream is live but no complete archive appears: Check its duration. YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; arrange separate segments or local recording for longer programs.
