How to Loop a School Open-Day Replay on YouTube Live

YouTube Live does not have a universal replay-loop switch. Use an encoder that repeats the video, connect it through Live Control Room, and test the full transition before event day.

To loop a school open-day replay on YouTube Live, send a prerecorded video from an encoder that can repeat a media file or playlist. YouTube supplies the live watch page and receives the encoder feed; the encoder controls the repeat. There is no universal YouTube Live “loop replay” switch.

What you need before you start

  • A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. Its guidance also notes that live chat or other features may be affected when a stream features 13–15-year-olds who are not visibly accompanied by an adult. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • The open-day video file, plus an encoder that can play and repeat it. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; a dedicated hardware encoder is not established as necessary for replaying an existing file.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder’s outgoing stream.
  • A local recording option if you want an independent archive in case the YouTube archive is unavailable.

For a school event, also follow your institution’s consent, safeguarding, and privacy rules. YouTube’s visibility settings are not a substitute for school policy or secure access controls.

Set up and test the loop before event day

  1. Choose the encoder. Compare the available options by setup complexity, the session length you expect, who can operate and troubleshoot it, whether it can repeat a local media source, and cost. YouTube describes software encoders as an option and recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events; a school replay alone does not establish that hardware is required. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live-streaming tips.
  2. Create or schedule the live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, and enter the event title and details. Select Public, Private, or Unlisted based on the intended audience. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder stream at least two hours ahead of the event.
  3. Connect the encoder. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains the available settings.
  4. Load the replay and enable repeat in the encoder. Add the video as a media source or to a playlist, then turn on that encoder’s repeat or loop option. The control and label depend on the software or hardware you use; consult its current instructions rather than looking for a YouTube loop setting.
  5. Check the stream settings. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in line with the file and your encoder’s capabilities. YouTube publishes recommended encoder values in its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide. Leave network headroom: YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth about 20% above the bitrate requirement.
  6. Run a full-cycle test. Start the encoder, check that the preview appears in Live Control Room, and let the file reach the end and begin again. Watch for a gap, black frames, audio cutoffs, or a change in volume at the join. Test the watch page as a viewer and check access from a phone or tablet. YouTube recommends testing in advance and verifying audience access across devices.
  7. Set up a local archive. Record the outgoing program locally if your encoder supports it, and confirm that the recording file grows during the test. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.

Start and monitor the event

  1. Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Wait for its feed to appear in Live Control Room and confirm the picture and sound before starting the event for viewers.
  2. Keep an operator available to monitor the video, audio, loop transition, and local recording. A shared school network may have less upload capacity than expected, so watch for encoder warnings or stream-quality changes.
  3. Choose whether viewers should have DVR. With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind during the live stream where supported. With it disabled, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast, but can watch the completed recording afterward. DVR can be limited or unavailable on very long streams. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
  4. When the replay is no longer needed, end the stream in the encoder and YouTube as appropriate. Confirm that the archive appears in Studio before deleting or overwriting your local backup.

Visibility, school audiences, and safeguarding

Public streams are broadly accessible. An Unlisted stream is reached through its link, so do not treat an unlisted URL as a secure access-control system. Private, Unlisted, and Public are the available visibility choices described by YouTube; check that the intended audience can open the watch page before the event. Review school consent and safeguarding requirements separately, especially if pupils appear in the replay.

Copyright and replay rights

Before streaming, confirm that the school has permission to use every part of the replay, including music, photographs, video clips, and other third-party material. A recording having been shown at the original open day does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it on YouTube. YouTube’s platform checks may identify copyrighted material, so resolve rights questions before scheduling and have an appropriate replacement or interruption plan if a claim affects the stream.

Archive limits and event length

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a YouTube archive matters, keep the live session below 12 hours and retain the local recording until you have checked the archive. Read YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • No preview in Live Control Room: Confirm that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied into the correct fields. Check that the channel is eligible to stream and that the encoder reports an active connection.
  • The video plays once and stops: Repeat is controlled by the encoder, not by a general YouTube setting. Enable the encoder’s loop option or use a repeating playlist, then test through a complete transition.
  • Black frames, silence, or a pause at the join: Check the media source or playlist transition in the encoder. Test the same file and settings end to end; do not assume the stream will join cleanly just because the first playback works.
  • Buffering or unstable quality: Compare the outgoing bitrate with the upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube recommends about 20% spare upload bandwidth above the stream’s bitrate requirement. Check whether other devices or school network traffic are consuming capacity.
  • The audience cannot open the event: Recheck the stream’s visibility and test its watch page using a device and account representative of the intended audience. An Unlisted link must be shared with viewers; it is not a private security boundary.
  • The archive is missing: Check whether the live session exceeded 12 hours and look for the local recording. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured, so a local copy is important if the recording is required.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want the open-day replay to keep running without leaving a school computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube stream from the cloud. Upload the replay, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos and playlists; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
