To loop a recorded property tour on YouTube Live from Linux, use FFmpeg’s input option -stream_loop -1 before the tour file, encode it to a YouTube-compatible stream, and send it to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The loop repeats the file; it does not by itself connect to YouTube or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A Linux host with an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders you intend to use. Installation steps vary by distribution, so check your distribution’s package documentation if FFmpeg is not installed.
- A recorded tour file stored on that host. Confirm you have the rights to rebroadcast it and that it does not reveal private information, such as occupants, access codes, or personal documents.
- Access to YouTube Live Control Room. Check there that live streaming is available for your channel; account eligibility and limits can vary.
- A stable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen video and audio bitrates.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. In Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key, and keep the key private. Google’s RTMPS guide specifies a valid RTMPS endpoint and path, TLS, and port 443. YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions explain where to get the URL and key; Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide describes the connection requirements.
Choose settings for the tour and your connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval with a 4-second maximum. The bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the figures below are YouTube Help recommendations verified in 2026, not universal requirements or independent measurements.
| Video setting | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p30 | 5 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1, 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| H.265/HEVC or AV1, 1080p60 | 12 Mbps |
Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, with headroom for normal network variation. YouTube recommends running a speed test and testing with movement and audio comparable to the intended broadcast. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for its wider resolution and codec recommendations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Run the tour in an infinite loop
For an ordinary 1080p30 H.264 tour, this command is an illustrative starting point. Replace the filename, RTMPS endpoint, and stream key with your own values from Live Control Room:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "tour.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://INGESTION_URL/STREAM_KEY"
- Set the input loop.
-stream_loop -1goes before-ibecause it applies to the input that follows. FFmpeg documents: “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop.” The option repeats the file; it does not establish a YouTube connection. - Pace file playback.
-rerequests real-time input pacing, which is appropriate for file playout rather than sending the file as fast as possible. - Encode video and audio. The example uses H.264 through
libx264, AAC audio, and a 5 Mbps video target. That target corresponds to YouTube Help’s current 1080p30 H.264 recommendation. The example’s-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is two seconds at 30 fps; if you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to preserve the intended keyframe interval. The command is a configuration pattern, not a verified recipe for every FFmpeg build, file, endpoint, or network. - Send to YouTube. Replace the quoted destination with the exact RTMPS URL and stream key provided in Live Control Room. Do not publish or share the key. The
-f flvoutput format is used for this RTMP-family delivery pattern.
If the source is not 1080p30, select a bitrate and output frame rate appropriate to its target resolution, frame rate, and codec. The example does not resize or change frame rate explicitly; if you need to do so, add and validate the relevant FFmpeg filters rather than assuming the sample command will convert every source as desired. For ordinary SDR tours, avoid adding HDR or HLS complexity unless your source and delivery needs call for it.

Test the broadcast before relying on it
- Start the command and watch FFmpeg’s console output for connection errors, encoder errors, and repeated input playback.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health and any warnings or messages before making it public.
- Verify that the video has motion and the audio is present, then observe a loop boundary to confirm the file starts again as expected.
- Run a speed test and compare sustainable upload capacity with the combined stream bitrate. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate,” and, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube never receives the stream: check that the destination exactly matches the RTMPS URL and key in Live Control Room, that the key is current, and that the host can make the required TLS connection to port 443.
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: check upload stability and sustained capacity first. Reduce the selected bitrate or output settings if the connection cannot maintain them; do not treat the published recommendation as a guarantee for your network.
- The video runs but has no sound: inspect the file’s streams with
ffmpeg -i "tour.mp4". If it has no audio track, the example’s audio mapping may fail or produce no usable audio; choose an explicit audio mapping or adjust the command for the actual inputs. - The loop does not happen: confirm
-stream_loop -1appears before the corresponding-i. It is an input option and applies to the file input that follows it. - The stream stops unexpectedly: inspect FFmpeg’s output, YouTube’s stream-health messages, network stability, and the URL/key configuration. Looping the source does not restart a failed network connection by itself.
- The selected encoder is unavailable: check the installed FFmpeg build for the requested codec encoder. YouTube’s support for a codec does not mean every Linux FFmpeg package includes an encoder for it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a Linux computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
