YouTube’s watch-page Loop control only repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not make a video into a live stream.
What you need before you start
- A video file of the walkthrough that OBS can play. OBS supports formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that will remain on and connected while you broadcast.
- A verified YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Check current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming overview.
- Permission to broadcast the footage and every audio track in it. YouTube requires live content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service; it does not establish whether you have permission for a particular home, its occupants, or the music in your video.
Set up a looping walkthrough in OBS

Check the video and its repeat point
Open the file and review its beginning and ending. The final frame and audio should transition acceptably to the opening when playback restarts. If the walkthrough has narration or music, listen at the join as well as checking the picture. Make sure the file is one OBS supports; the OBS format list and source guidance cover Media Sources.

Create a scene and add the file
In OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Media Source from the Sources panel. In the source properties, select the local video file and enable Loop. OBS describes this setting as whether the file plays again after playback completes. Fit the source to the scene and preview it to check framing and sound.

Use a playlist if the broadcast needs multiple tours
For an ordered rotation of several files, add a VLC Video source, build the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source type to be available. A single Media Source with Loop is simpler for one walkthrough; a VLC playlist suits a program that should move through multiple tours. Check the transitions and ordering in the OBS preview before going live.

Create the YouTube Live event and connect OBS
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or manage the event, and retrieve the stream URL and stream key from its stream settings. In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS as the service when available and enter the stream details. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP; see YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. Treat the stream key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event, so do not publish or share it.

Test the feed before making the event public
Start the encoder and verify that the Live Control Room preview shows the right scene, sound, and motion. Check that the file repeats as expected and OBS continues sending video. YouTube recommends leaving upload bandwidth headroom—about 20% beyond the total bitrate—and checking stream health. Its live-streaming tips also recommend testing with representative audio and movement.

Start and monitor the broadcast
When the preview is correct, start the event in YouTube’s Live Control Room if required by the event’s settings. Check the watch page from another device, including a phone, and continue monitoring audio and video. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking accessibility and monitoring the stream after it starts.
Why YouTube’s Loop button is not enough
YouTube documents a viewer-side Loop command for repeating a video or playlist on its watch screen. That affects playback for the viewer; it does not send the video as a live broadcast. A live stream is a feed sent to YouTube in real time, so the repeat must happen in the encoder—in this workflow, the OBS Media Source’s Loop option. Plan for long broadcasts and replays
YouTube says DVR can let viewers pause and resume a live stream, but rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours and recommends keeping a local backup; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not promise viewers a complete replay or uninterrupted rewind for an extra-long broadcast. Check the current guidance on DVR on live streams and live-stream archiving.
Troubleshooting the loop and stream
- The video stops instead of restarting: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a VLC Video source, confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled.
- The playlist source is unavailable: OBS requires VLC to be installed for its VLC Video source. Install VLC, then check the available source types again.
- The video is cropped, stretched, or too small: Select the source in the scene and adjust it to fit the canvas; preview the full frame before starting the event.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that OBS is using the event’s current stream URL and key, that the correct event is open, and that OBS is actively streaming. If a key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Check the computer’s internet connection and reduce the total outgoing bitrate if the available upload bandwidth cannot sustain it. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom beyond total bitrate; consult its live-streaming tips.
- The repeat sounds abrupt: Review the file’s ending and opening, including audio, and edit the source video if needed. OBS repeats the file; it does not make the transition seamless.
- The replay is incomplete after a long event: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and DVR rewind may be limited on streams longer than 12 hours. Keep a local recording if a complete copy matters.
