To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from a Windows PC, use FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file and -re to send it at its normal playback rate. Encode to a YouTube-compatible format, then send the output to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The computer and its internet connection must stay available while FFmpeg is streaming.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, verified and without live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help’s guidance accessed in 2026: YouTube encoder setup and live-streaming eligibility.
- A prerecorded video on the Windows computer and an FFmpeg build that runs in Command Prompt and includes the
libx264encoder used in the example below. - The current server URL and stream key for the stream you intend to use. YouTube describes the key as similar to a password, so keep it private.
- A stable upload connection with headroom. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream bitrate: YouTube streaming tips.
This example is a configurable template, not a tested command. It assumes a source file with audio and uses 1080p30-style bitrate and GOP values; adjust those values to match the actual output and YouTube’s current settings.
Prepare YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream or scheduled event.
- Copy that stream’s server URL and stream key. Use the exact destination provided there rather than assuming an RTMPS URL format.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and replace it in your FFmpeg command.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for encoder ingest. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose bitrate, frame rate and keyframes
Set the output to what the source and connection can sustain, then check the matching row in YouTube’s current bitrate table for the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube recommends 5–14 Mbps. That range does not apply automatically to other resolutions, frame rates or codecs.

- Bitrate: The example uses 6,000 kbps video and caps the maximum at the same rate. Select a value from YouTube’s current table for your exact output settings.
- Keyframe interval: The example’s
-g 60means 60 frames per GOP. At 30 fps, that is a two-second interval. At another frame rate, change the GOP size so the interval remains two seconds. - Audio: The example encodes AAC at 128 kbps. Confirm the source has the audio you want; adapt the command for a silent video.
- Pixel format: The example uses
yuv420p. Verify the chosen output settings against the source and YouTube’s current requirements. - Upload capacity: Allow YouTube’s recommended 20% spare bandwidth beyond the total stream bitrate, and monitor stream health during a test.
Run the loop from Windows Command Prompt
- Make FFmpeg available in Command Prompt and confirm that
ffmpegruns. Check that this build includeslibx264; this article does not endorse a particular Windows binary distributor. - Replace
C:Videosprerecorded.mp4with the full path to your file. Replace the RTMPS destination placeholder with the exact server URL and key from Live Control Room. - Adjust bitrate and GOP settings for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec. Keep input options before the related
-ioption. - Run the command:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:Videosprerecorded.mp4" -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"Use the exact RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room in place of rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY. Do not publish a real key in a screenshot, post or shared command history.
What the important options do
-rereads the file at its native rate instead of sending it as quickly as the computer can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely.-1is the repeat count for an endless loop.-iidentifies the input file.-c:v libx264encodes H.264 video, provided the FFmpeg build includes that encoder.-c:a aacencodes AAC audio; the example expects an audio stream in the source.-g 60sets GOP spacing in frames. It is a two-second interval only at 30 fps.-f flvselects an FLV output container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest; the destination should still use the RTMPS URL YouTube provides.
Test the broadcast and end it safely
- Start FFmpeg and check its console for errors. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming stream preview.
- Test representative motion and audio before the audience arrives. Inspect the preview and stream health; YouTube recommends testing before going live.
- For a scheduled event, use the available Live Control Room controls to start the broadcast after the preview is present.
- When finished, end the event in YouTube when applicable, then stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams.
FFmpeg looping repeats the file input; it does not ensure an uninterrupted network connection or guarantee that YouTube’s live event remains available. A visible or audible boundary at the end of the file may remain. Re-encode or edit the source if needed, then test the complete loop; seamless looping is not guaranteed for every file.

Troubleshoot common problems

FFmpeg versus a hardware encoder
FFmpeg is a software route for the Windows workflow above: it plays a file and sends the encoded output from a computer, with setup and control in Command Prompt. A dedicated encoder is an optional device rather than a requirement. YouTube lists hardware encoders, including AJA HELO Plus, with optional prerecorded-media scheduling; supported features depend on the device. Hardware means an additional device to purchase and maintain, while the stream key must still be handled as a credential. The exact user interface and file-scheduling capabilities vary by model.
