To loop a playlist with FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 before the input it should repeat, then encode and send the media to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The option requests infinite looping; it does not make every file ending in .m3u a playlist format FFmpeg can read. First confirm your playlist’s actual format and test that its entries play cleanly in your installed FFmpeg build.
What this method does—and what an M3U file means
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop is an input option: -1 requests infinite looping, while 0 means no looping. Put the option before the -i for the input it applies to. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes the option.
A local playlist and YouTube’s HLS ingestion playlist are different things. The .m3u extension alone does not establish that a file is an HLS media playlist—or that FFmpeg can consume it as concat-demuxer input. The command below uses a text list in the concat demuxer’s expected format, not an arbitrary M3U file.
Prepare and test a concat playlist
Check the playlist and media files
- Confirm each entry is a path or URL that the FFmpeg process can open. Paths containing spaces or special characters must be quoted according to the selected playlist syntax.
- Check that the files’ codecs, stream layouts, and timestamps can transition cleanly from one entry to the next. A list that parses may still have playback gaps or audio/video changes at boundaries.
- Keep the list in the concat demuxer’s expected file-list format. If your source file is an M3U, determine its dialect and convert or prepare an appropriate input list rather than assuming it is compatible.
Use this command shape
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command shape, not a tested, ready-to-run command. Replace the destination with the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm your installed FFmpeg build and playlist format. Keep the stream key private: do not publish it in a script, terminal recording, or log.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
-re reads file input at a real-time rate instead of sending it as fast as the machine can process it. The command encodes video as H.264 and audio as AAC, then outputs FLV for the RTMP-family destination; FFmpeg’s documentation uses those elements in its RTMP example. FFmpeg documents real-time input pacing and FIFO options for attempting recovery after temporary network failure; recovery is an attempt, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
If the playlist is audio-only
The example specifies both video and audio encoders. If your files have no video, add a suitable video input, such as a static image, and explicitly map the audio and video streams. Do not assume that audio-only input will be accepted in your particular YouTube live workflow; confirm the current requirements and verify the result in a test stream.

Set encoder output for YouTube
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and lists H.264 video with AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not exceed four seconds. Its advanced audio guidance specifies stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that any particular FFmpeg command or media file will produce a healthy stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Select a resolution and video bitrate that suit the source and the available upload connection. YouTube transcodes live input for viewer formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source stream. Before relying on a long broadcast, test representative audio and video and check YouTube’s stream-health status.

Keep local playlist input separate from YouTube HLS ingestion
YouTube’s HLS option is a separate ingestion protocol for HLS-capable encoders. Its instructions specify 1–4 second MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Those rules apply when using YouTube HLS ingestion—not to an ordinary local music playlist passed to FFmpeg. Read YouTube’s HLS ingest instructions.
Preflight and troubleshoot the stream
Before going live
- Confirm FFmpeg can open every playlist entry and that paths are written correctly for the list format.
- Check that
-stream_loop -1appears before the-ifor the input you intend to loop. - Use the RTMPS endpoint and key from YouTube Live Control Room; protect the key from public exposure.
- Run a short private or unlisted test. Check that playback reaches and advances across an entry boundary, audio continues, video is present if your setup requires it, and YouTube reports healthy ingest. YouTube recommends testing before going live. YouTube encoder guidance.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Playlist does not open | The file is not in the format expected by the selected demuxer, or an entry path is inaccessible. | Verify the playlist dialect and each path or URL. Do not treat the .m3u suffix as proof of concat-list compatibility. |
| The input plays once instead of repeating | The loop option is missing, has the wrong value, or is placed after the input it should affect. | Use -stream_loop -1 before that input’s -i. |
| Playback breaks at a file boundary | Successive files may differ in codec, stream layout, or timestamps. | Test transitions with the actual files and inspect the media and playlist entries; the option to loop does not guarantee seamless joins. |
| YouTube does not show a healthy stream | The destination, credentials, encoding settings, or connection may be wrong or unstable. | Recheck the Live Control Room endpoint and key, encoder recommendations, and stream-health display during a short test. |
| Stream stops after a temporary network failure | The connection dropped and the process did not recover successfully. | FFmpeg documents FIFO options that attempt recovery after temporary network failure. Configure and test them in your environment; they do not guarantee a seamless reconnect. |
| An HLS playlist is rejected or behaves unexpectedly | You may be mixing local playlist input with YouTube’s separate HLS ingestion requirements. | For HLS ingestion, follow YouTube’s segment, rolling-playlist, transport, and request rules rather than relying on the local playlist’s filename. |
Copyright and continuous operation
Only stream recordings and tracks you have the rights and permissions to broadcast. A successful connection to YouTube does not establish that playlist content is licensed or that a channel meets YouTube’s policies. Check the rights for every item and YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a continuous radio stream. This method also does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 availability: the computer, network, FFmpeg process, media files, and YouTube ingest all remain potential points of failure.
