To loop multiple bird-call recordings in OBS, add them to a VLC Video source and leave Loop Playlist enabled. Keep Shuffle Playlist off for the listed order, or turn it on for randomized playback. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items, unlike Media Source. See the OBS Media Sources guide and the OBS Sources Guide.
Set up a looping bird-call playlist
- Install OBS and VLC. Match their architectures; OBS’s documentation specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Open the scene you plan to stream. In the Sources dock, click the plus button and select VLC Video. If that option is missing, check that VLC is installed and the architecture matches.
- Add the recordings. Populate the VLC Video playlist with the local bird-call audio files you want to use.
- Choose the playback order. Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for the order shown in the playlist; enable it if you want randomized playback.
- Check the source and audio in OBS. Make sure VLC Video is active in the scene and that its audio level registers in OBS. The settings establish playlist and loop behavior, but do not guarantee that a particular file, mixer route, or level will work on every system.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube uses it to accept the encoder’s feed.
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check that the bird calls are audible, and then click Go live.
- Use a test that includes the audio you intend to broadcast, and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream; see its encoder settings and stream health guidance.
Before streaming, confirm that you have permission to broadcast the recordings and leave them available in any archived replay. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance includes checking rights for audio and video.
Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video does not appear: install VLC and check the architecture match. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Only one recording repeats: that is the behavior of Media Source. Use VLC Video and add each file as a playlist item to loop multiple recordings.
- Files play in an unexpected order: check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled and inspect the playlist contents and order.
- The YouTube preview is silent: check that the source is playing and its audio registers in the OBS mixer, then listen to the Live Control Room preview before going live. The precise mixer adjustment depends on your operating system, OBS version, and audio routing.
- Playback stops or restarts after changing scenes: VLC Video has a visibility behavior setting; by default, it stops when not visible and restarts when visible. Adjust it to suit your scene setup and test the result before broadcasting.
