To loop a local video indefinitely with FFmpeg, put -stream_loop -1 before its input, then send the encoded output to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your YouTube Live event. For a playlist of separate files, each file needs a suitable loop arrangement; the single-file example below does not combine or loop a multi-file playlist automatically.
Before you stream
Check YouTube live eligibility
YouTube’s eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements if the Live Control Room does not let you create an event.
Confirm rebroadcast rights
Before streaming, confirm you have permission to rebroadcast every sound recording and any accompanying images or video. A devotional subject, an old recording, or a copy that is publicly available online does not by itself establish permission. Technical eligibility and a working stream do not grant copyright rights.
Create a YouTube Live event and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to use.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains where to find them.
- Choose the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest; it describes it as “RTMP over a Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) connection” that provides encryption. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not post it in a public script, screenshot, or chat. Avoid leaving it in shell history or logs where practical; if it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.

Loop one local file with FFmpeg
Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders you plan to use, then substitute your input filename and the RTMPS URL and key from the event settings. This is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command for every Linux distribution, FFmpeg build, media file, or network:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "track-or-video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
-rereads the input at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1requests infinite repetition of the input that follows.-inames the input file. Input options are position-sensitive: put-stream_loopbefore the matching-i. FFmpeg documents that “Loop 0 means no loop, loop -1 means infinite loop” in its command-line documentation.-c:v libx264selects H.264 video encoding;-pix_fmt yuv420puses a widely compatible pixel format;-r 30sets 30 frames per second; and-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps.-c:a aac -b:a 128kselects AAC audio at 128 kbit/s. Confirm this suits the source and your chosen output settings.-f flvselects the output container commonly used for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
Replace RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY with the exact server URL and key format shown for the event; do not literally paste the placeholder. Keep credentials out of scripts or commands that others can read. If the file is audio-only, this video example needs a video source or a deliberately configured visual output; it will not create one automatically.

Handle a playlist of separate files carefully
The command above loops one input. It does not automatically advance through multiple unrelated files. A multi-file workflow must account for how the files are joined, whether their codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio parameters, and time bases are compatible, how timestamps behave at each boundary, and how repetition is arranged for every input. FFmpeg transitions can fail or produce gaps if media properties differ.
Do not assume that placing several filenames after one -i or adding one loop option will create a continuous playlist. Choose a playlist or concatenation workflow that matches your FFmpeg version and media, test it locally through transitions and repeated playback, and inspect FFmpeg output for errors before sending it to YouTube. No single multi-file recipe is guaranteed here because the right syntax depends on the files and workflow.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance currently lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the current bitrate table.
Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so there is no single correct bitrate for every stream. Select output dimensions and a bitrate that fit both the source and available upload capacity, then consult YouTube’s current table rather than treating the example’s 30 fps or audio bitrate as universal recommendations. The example uses a two-second GOP at 30 fps; if you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to preserve the intended keyframe interval.

Preview, go live, and monitor
- Start FFmpeg and check its output for connection, encoding, or media errors.
- Wait for the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture, sound, and stream health before making the event public or starting it for viewers.
- Monitor the FFmpeg process and YouTube stream health during the broadcast. Test the whole playlist locally, including file transitions and the point where it repeats.
- When finished, stop the FFmpeg process and end the event in YouTube Studio as appropriate.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that threshold does not establish unlimited event duration or guarantee an uninterrupted FFmpeg process. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
Troubleshooting
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the event’s stream URL and key, ensure you used its RTMPS URL, and review FFmpeg’s connection output. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the command or configuration.
- The stream connects but YouTube reports a settings problem: Check codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, CBR, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder table. Bitrate must fit the chosen codec and output format.
- FFmpeg exits or reports missing streams: The file may lack video or audio, use unsupported codecs, or not contain the streams expected by the command. Inspect the input and adapt the output; the sample assumes a video-and-audio source and an FFmpeg build with the selected encoders.
- A multi-file playlist has gaps, errors, or uneven transitions: Check media compatibility and timestamps at each boundary, then test the entire sequence locally. A single-file loop command does not solve playlist transitions.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check FFmpeg’s process output, the host’s power and network, and YouTube stream health. A loop option repeats media but does not restart a crashed process or guarantee a stable connection.
