The files must be compatible for a seamless, no-re-encode concat; if they are not, normalize or re-encode them first. The command below is a starting point, not a tested, version-specific recipe: verify your FFmpeg build and test through Live Control Room before going public.
1. Check and order your video files
A folder is not a playlist: filesystem ordering can vary, so decide the sequence explicitly. Check that every file plays, has the expected audio, and uses compatible streams. The FFmpeg concat demuxer requires matching streams, including codecs and time bases. It uses file durations to set later timestamps, so inaccurate duration metadata or clips with unequal stream lengths can cause gaps or artifacts. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation describes these requirements.
- For a no-re-encode workflow, use files with matching stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and compatible parameters.
- If the files differ, normalize them to common parameters or use the concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the demuxer approach from filter-based concatenation.
2. Create the concat manifest
Create a plain-text file called playlist.ffconcat in a convenient location. Put one file line per video, in the exact playback order. For example:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
If you use the optional ffconcat version 1.0 header, it must be the first line exactly as shown, with no leading whitespace or byte-order mark, for automatic script recognition. Paths with spaces or special characters need correct quoting or escaping; test your manifest with your actual filenames. Relative paths are resolved from the manifest’s location.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects unsafe paths, including absolute paths and names outside its portable-character rules. Keep that protection for untrusted manifests. For a manifest you created and trust, an absolute path may require -safe 0; only use it when you understand that the manifest can reference local files. See the FFmpeg formats documentation for the path and safety rules.
3. Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream, then copy its current stream URL and stream key into your encoder command or configuration.
- Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it. In Live Control Room, use the lock control to retrieve the RTMPS URL rather than assuming the default RTMP address is the secure one.
- Keep the key private. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shared command history, or log.
YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream keys and URLs, while its RTMPS guide explains secure URL retrieval and connection troubleshooting. If an RTMPS connection fails, check the exact protocol, server, port, and URL shown for your stream; do not substitute a guessed endpoint.

4. Start FFmpeg with the playlist looped
Options in FFmpeg generally apply to the next input or output, so place the input-loop option before the concat manifest. This Bash-style example shows the arrangement; replace the paths, key, URL, and encoding values for your system and source. It has not been validated against every FFmpeg build or live YouTube account.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 6M -maxrate 6M -bufsize 12M
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR-URL/YOUR-KEY"
This example assumes the files are compatible with concat demuxing and that your FFmpeg build has the libx264 encoder. The values are illustrative, not universal recommendations: the 6 Mbps video bitrate, 30 fps output, and 60-frame GOP are not right for every source, resolution, frame rate, connection, or account. The -safe 0 setting is included only to accommodate a trusted manifest that might use paths rejected by the default safety check; omit it when relative safe paths work.

-stream_loop -1 asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. Because the playlist is the input, it is the combined list that repeats, rather than just one individual clip. If your build rejects an option or behaves differently, check its installed FFmpeg command-line documentation and run a private test stream before relying on it.
For production use, consider keeping the key out of the command line, since commands may be retained in shell history or visible to other local users. Use a protected configuration or environment-specific secret-handling method appropriate to your operating system, and restrict access to any file containing the key.

5. Choose settings that fit the footage and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP(S) ingestion with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its H.264 guidance lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; these are YouTube’s settings recommendations, not measured performance guarantees. Bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube encoder settings table for your target format.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the stream to the source and your upload capacity. Upscaling low-resolution footage does not create source detail.
- Video bitrate: Select a value appropriate to your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. The illustrative command’s value is not a substitute for YouTube’s table.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval if supported by the encoder settings; keep it at or below YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Audio: Confirm your playlist has the intended audio streams and choose audio encoding settings compatible with the source and destination.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. Shared network use can reduce available capacity; see YouTube’s streaming tips.
When streams differ enough that a common output is needed, use a filter-and-re-encode workflow rather than expecting the concat demuxer to fix mismatched inputs automatically.

6. Test, start, and monitor the live stream
- Run a private or unlisted test with moving video and audio similar to the material you intend to stream.
- Check that Live Control Room receives the feed, shows the expected preview, and reports healthy stream status before publishing.
- Start the public stream using the controls and settings shown in Live Control Room. For scheduled streams, review the preview and whether auto-start or auto-stop is enabled; some configurations require you to click Go live.
- Keep watching stream health, picture, and sound while the playlist runs. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers preview, starting, ending, and archiving; streams under 12 hours are automatically archived according to that guide.
- To stop, end the encoder feed and use the Live Control Room end controls appropriate to the stream’s settings.
Review YouTube’s live streaming overview if live streaming is not enabled on the channel or you need to check the general setup path. Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to use; looping a file does not change its copyright status or make it eligible for monetization.
Common problems and fixes
- “Unsafe file name” or manifest rejected: Use safe relative paths and portable filenames where possible. If the manifest is trusted and absolute paths are necessary, consider
-safe 0; do not disable safety for a manifest from an untrusted source. - Playlist order is wrong: Put files in the desired order in the manifest. Do not rely on directory listing order.
- Errors or glitches at clip boundaries: Check stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and duration metadata. Normalize sources or switch to filter-based concatenation with re-encoding.
- FFmpeg loops only one file or exits instead of repeating: Confirm the loop option precedes the concat input and that the manifest is the input being looped. Validate option support in your installed build.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Recheck the copied URL and key, RTMP(S) protocol, server, and port. Confirm your encoder supports the selected RTMPS endpoint.
- Buffering or unhealthy status: Reduce bitrate or resolution, check for competing network use, and preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom.
- Feed arrives but the public stream does not start: Check the preview and the stream’s auto-start/auto-stop settings, then use the Live Control Room start control if required.
