To loop one sleep-sounds file indefinitely with FFmpeg, place -stream_loop -1 before its -i input and use -re to read the file at its native rate for live output. For YouTube Live, you also need a working encoder URL and private stream key, compatible audio or video settings, and a Windows PC and internet connection that stay available. The command below is a starting pattern, not a tested end-to-end setup.
Loop one sleep-sounds file with FFmpeg
Install a Windows FFmpeg build, open PowerShell, and substitute the path to your audio file and the ingest URL plus stream key supplied by your destination platform. This schematic example sends audio over FLV:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:pathtosleep-sounds.mp3" -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<destination ingest URL and stream key>"-repaces a file input at its native rate rather than letting FFmpeg read it as fast as possible. FFmpeg documents it as equivalent to-readrate 1and describes it for simulating a capture device or live input when reading from a file. It does not stabilize your connection or keep Windows awake.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the-iit applies to.-iidentifies the source file. Use a real path and quote it if it contains spaces.-c:a aac -b:a 128kselects AAC audio at 128 Kbps for this example. Confirm the destination’s current requirements and your installed FFmpeg build before using these settings; they are not a universal recommendation for every service or stream.-f flvsets the output format used in this RTMP-style example. Replace the placeholder with the exact ingest URL and stream key from your platform.
For YouTube Live, YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and accepts AAC or MP3 audio. A video-bearing feed may be necessary or more suitable for your particular stream setup, so confirm what YouTube Live Control Room expects before relying on an audio-only command. Use RTMPS when available and keep your stream key private.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the URL/key workflow at Create a live stream with an encoder.
- Paste those values into the encoder destination in place of the placeholder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public repository. If someone gets it, reset it in Studio.
- Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for your chosen resolution and codec. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options; CBR bitrate encoding; up to 60 fps; and a keyframe interval recommended at two seconds and no longer than four seconds. For stereo AAC or MP3, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Do not choose a video bitrate without matching it to the resolution, codec, and available upload capacity.
- Run a connection speed test, start with a private or otherwise suitable test stream, and check stream health and error messages before promoting it. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Follow the live-encoder guidance for testing and monitoring at YouTube’s encoder settings page.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will become one complete archive; plan how you will preserve recordings if an archive matters.

Loop a playlist of sleep sounds
If you want rain, wind, or other recordings to play in sequence, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text playlist. Create a simple text file such as playlist.txt:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<destination ingest URL and stream key>"This combines documented concat-demuxer and input-loop behavior; validate it on your installed FFmpeg build before using it for a live service. The playlist files need compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. The demuxer adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so inaccurate duration metadata can create gaps or artifacts; a duration directive can override a stored duration. Listen to the joins and inspect FFmpeg’s output rather than assuming a collection of MP3s will join cleanly.
The concat script uses an extended-ASCII-compatible text format. Keep paths simple, check their quoting on your Windows setup, and save the file in a compatible encoding. -safe 0 relaxes concat path-safety checks; use it only with a playlist you control. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Keep the Windows setup running
Looping a file is not the same as guaranteeing a 24/7 broadcast. FFmpeg’s -nostdin option is useful when running it as a background task because it prevents the process from checking console input. On Windows, redirecting standard input from NUL is another documented option. These address console input only: neither prevents sleep nor restarts FFmpeg after a crash or restores a dropped connection. Details are in the FFmpeg FAQ.
Before depending on a local machine, check the following for your own Windows version and connection. Exact sleep-setting labels and restart mechanisms vary, and the available guidance does not establish a universal Windows recipe:

- Set Windows power and sleep behavior so the PC does not suspend during the broadcast; verify the setting actually applies while plugged in.
- Decide how FFmpeg will launch after a restart and how you will notice and recover from a stopped process.
- Check that your internet connection can sustain the selected stream bitrate and remain available; an encoder cannot compensate for an ISP or power outage.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages during operation, and have a plan for reconnection if the session drops.
Choose one repeating file or a playlist

Rights and stream interruptions
Use only audio and visuals for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube warns that live streams can be terminated or affected by copyright restrictions, including a live copyright strike, and Content ID claims may be made after an archived stream. Common problems and checks
- The file loops too fast: confirm
-reis present before the file input so FFmpeg reads it at native rate. - The source ends instead of repeating: put
-stream_loop -1before the relevant-i; it is an input option. - YouTube does not receive the stream: recheck the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, confirm the output format and codecs against current YouTube guidance, and check encoder and Studio messages.
- The broadcast drops or stutters: inspect YouTube stream health and test upload capacity against the selected bitrate. The loop option does not repair network instability.
- Playlist joins have gaps or artifacts: check stream compatibility and time bases, verify duration metadata, listen to transitions, and consider a
durationdirective where stored duration is inaccurate. - FFmpeg waits for keyboard input: use
-nostdinfor background operation or redirect standard input fromNUL; this does not address sleep or failure recovery.
