How to Loop 4K 60fps Videos on YouTube Live Without Unnecessary Quality Loss

You may not need to convert your 4K 60fps video to loop it in OBS. Learn the source settings, YouTube bitrate guidance, stream setup and limits of “lossless” live delivery.

You may not need to convert your 4K 60fps video at all. If OBS can play the file correctly at its original frame size and frame rate, use it as the source and loop it directly. That avoids an unnecessary re-encode, but it cannot guarantee a lossless path to viewers: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats.

Do you need to convert a 4K 60fps video before looping it?

Usually, no. OBS supports common video containers including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. If your file loads and plays properly in OBS, keep it as the source rather than converting it just to make it loop. A filename extension alone does not prove that the codec and profile inside the file will work on your computer, so test playback first.

“Without quality loss” has limits here. Skipping an unnecessary conversion avoids one potential re-encode. YouTube, however, automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers, including the source feed; an end-to-end guarantee that every viewer receives an unchanged file is not supported.

Loop one video or a playlist in OBS

Loop a single file

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will carry the video.
  2. Select the video file and enable Loop in the source properties.
  3. Confirm that playback reaches the end and starts again, with the expected picture and audio.

Loop several videos

  1. Install VLC on the computer running OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source and create or select its playlist.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist, then play through the clips to check transitions and audio levels.

These controls repeat the media locally; they do not start a YouTube broadcast by themselves. You still need to configure OBS as the encoder and connect it to a YouTube live stream.

Set OBS for 4K at 60 fps

  1. Set the OBS output canvas and stream output to the video’s intended 4K frame size and 60 fps. Check that OBS is not scaling the image down or changing the frame rate.
  2. Choose an ingest codec and use YouTube’s corresponding 2160p60 bitrate guidance:
Ingest codec YouTube recommended bitrate at 2160p60 YouTube listed minimum at 2160p60
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 35 Mbps 10 Mbps
H.264 50 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of a particular visual result. Select a bitrate your encoder and sustained upload connection can support; monitor stream health during the broadcast.

  1. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  2. Use AAC or MP3 audio and RTMPS for the connection when available.
  3. Use normal latency at 4K/2160p. YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable at that resolution.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live and test before broadcasting

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding OBS streaming settings. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  3. Start the OBS stream and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check that the resolution, frame rate, motion and audio are as expected.
  4. Test with representative sections of the video, including its most detailed or fast-moving scenes. Keep the broadcast private or unlisted while checking, if appropriate for your setup.
  5. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and verify that the internet connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, not just reach it briefly.

If the channel has never streamed before, YouTube says enabling live streaming can take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a scheduled broadcast.

When conversion is necessary

Convert only when the source does not decode or play reliably in OBS, or when you have a specific compatibility reason. The right output settings depend on the original codec, bit depth, color or HDR characteristics and audio format. Without those details, there is no universal conversion command or setting that can be called lossless.

  • Keep the original file and convert a copy.
  • Preserve the frame size and 60 fps frame rate when possible; avoid accidental scaling or frame-rate conversion.
  • Choose settings based on the actual compatibility problem rather than repeatedly converting until a file happens to play.
  • Inspect the converted copy in OBS, including image detail, color and audio, before relying on it for a long broadcast.

YouTube’s guidance to upload content at the frame rate in which it was recorded applies to uploaded videos; it is not a promise of lossless live delivery. For a live loop, prioritize a file OBS decodes correctly and encoder settings that match the intended output.

Troubleshooting a 4K60 YouTube loop

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS shows a blank source or playback fails The container may be recognized while its internal codec or profile is not supported by the local setup. Test another known-compatible file. If conversion is needed, make a copy and verify that OBS plays it before going live.
The video is softer or not actually 4K The OBS canvas or output may be scaled down, or the frame size may not match the source. Check the OBS canvas and stream output dimensions against the source’s intended 4K frame size.
Motion looks uneven The output frame rate may differ from the 60 fps source, or the system may not sustain encoding and playback. Confirm OBS is set to 60 fps and test a representative fast-motion section while monitoring stream health.
The broadcast drops frames or becomes unstable The encoder or upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate. Check YouTube’s stream-health information and whether sustained upload capacity supports the codec’s 2160p60 recommendation.
The playlist does not repeat The source may be a single-file Media Source, or playlist looping may not be enabled. Use VLC Video for multiple clips, ensure VLC is installed, and enable Loop Playlist.
You cannot start a first broadcast Live streaming may not yet be enabled on the channel. Enable live streaming in advance; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.

Copyright and YouTube monetization considerations

Technical ability to loop a video does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its picture or audio. Use material you own, have licensed for live streaming, or are otherwise authorized to use. A loop of reused material may also raise separate YouTube monetization-policy issues; a stream being technically live does not by itself make its content eligible for monetization. Check the applicable YouTube rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long broadcast.
