Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You cannot guarantee a Christmas music livestream will avoid a copyright claim or strike. The safest approach is to use music you created and recorded with all contributors’ rights cleared, music licensed for the live broadcast and any replay, or a carol whose public-domain status—and the rights to the specific arrangement and recording—have been checked. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a stream can be interrupted even when you have a license if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel.
Choose music you have the right to stream
Before scheduling or promoting the broadcast, identify the exact song and recording you plan to use. A musical composition, a particular arrangement, a sound recording, performers’ contributions, and samples or backing tracks can involve different rights. YouTube makes the streamer responsible for obtaining the rights needed for the live content and any archived version.
| Music route | What to check | Practical assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Music you composed and recorded | Confirm all contributors are covered and that samples, backing tracks, arrangements, and other third-party materials are cleared for the intended use. | A strong route when you control all relevant rights; “original” alone does not clear third-party elements. |
| Someone else’s music with permission or a license | Confirm it covers YouTube livestreaming, an archived replay if you will keep one, and the territories where viewers may watch. Ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. | A license can establish permission, but it does not by itself guarantee that YouTube’s live system will not interrupt the stream. |
| A public-domain carol performed by you | Verify the composition’s status in the relevant jurisdiction. Separately check any modern arrangement, accompaniment, or recording you use. | Potentially useful, but public-domain status is not always straightforward and does not automatically make every recording free to use. |
| YouTube Audio Library | Read the applicable terms for the specific track and confirm they fit your live use. | YouTube recommends the Audio Library as a source of copyright-safe music; still check the terms for the track you select. |
| Creator Music | Check current availability and each track’s usage terms. | Not a livestream licensing shortcut: YouTube’s current FAQ says Creator Music does not support licensing for live content. |
These are practical routes, not guarantees against enforcement. YouTube says none of its general approaches—including permission, public domain, Creative Commons, and its music resources—guarantees that you will avoid a copyright issue. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
Get permission that covers the broadcast and replay
If you plan to perform or play music controlled by someone else, get written permission from the relevant rights holder before you go live. Be specific about the intended YouTube live use, whether the stream will remain available as a replay, and the territories covered. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider for having the necessary rights for live content throughout the world, including music rights.

- Identify the rights involved. List the composition, arrangement, recording, performers, and any backing tracks or samples in the planned set.
- Request permission for the actual use. Ask for coverage of the YouTube livestream and, if applicable, the archived video. Do not treat a purchase, a “free” label, or credit in the description as proof of permission.
- Ask about Content ID allowlisting. YouTube advises creators using licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a live stream can still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted.
- Keep the records accessible. Save permission and any allowlisting confirmation so you can refer to them if the broadcast is flagged. Documentation does not guarantee that a stream will stay uninterrupted.
YouTube’s livestream terms state that providers must have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. For licensed third-party content, review YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming restrictions and ask the rights holder about allowlisting before the event.
Check Christmas carols and recordings separately
Do not assume a song is free to use simply because it is old or commonly called a traditional carol. Copyright status can vary by country, and a composition, a later arrangement, and a commercial recording may have different statuses. YouTube itself cautions that determining whether something is public domain can be complicated and that rules vary by jurisdiction.

If you perform a carol yourself, verify the composition’s status where your stream will be available and use an arrangement you have the right to perform or reproduce. If you play a commercial or other existing recording, check rights for that specific recording too. The sources cited here do not establish the status of any particular Christmas carol, arrangement, or recording.
Understand what YouTube may do during and after a live stream
While you are live
YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may show a warning and replace the stream with a placeholder. If the content continues, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream; a broadcast may also be terminated for a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions.

After the broadcast ends
If you archive the live stream, Content ID claims may be made after the stream ends. A broadcast that was not interrupted live is therefore not necessarily cleared for its replay. Decide in advance whether you intend to retain an archive and make sure your permission covers that use. YouTube explains this in its live-streaming guidance.
Do not rely on Creator Music for live licensing
YouTube’s current Creator Music FAQ says, “Currently, Creator Music doesn’t support licensing for live content.” It also describes Creator Music as available to U.S. creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion to non-U.S. YPP creators pending. Availability can change, so check the current Creator Music FAQ before relying on it for any use. For this article’s purpose, its live-content limitation is decisive: a Creator Music license is not a route to clear Christmas music for a livestream.

Plan for interruptions without confusing them with rights clearance
Have a backup plan in case YouTube warns you or interrupts the stream: know how you will stop the disputed track, communicate with viewers, and resume only with music you are authorized to use. A technical service can help keep an authorized playlist running, but it cannot supply music rights or prevent copyright enforcement. Do not describe any song source, license, or streaming setup as a guarantee against a claim or strike.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the Christmas music is cleared and your goal is to keep a YouTube stream running from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams what you uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and includes a first day free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo does not grant music rights; clear your playlist for the live broadcast and any replay first. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
