To broadcast one live production on Facebook and YouTube at the same time, connect both destinations to a hosted multistreaming service and send it one feed from OBS or another encoder. The service relays that feed to both platforms. A direct multi-output encoder is another option, but you must configure and send a separate output to each platform.
Before the event, enable YouTube live streaming and allow up to 24 hours if it is your channel’s first time. Then check that your Facebook account and the destination you want—a profile, Page, or Group—are available to your chosen workflow.
Choose how to send your stream to both platforms
| Method | How it works | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted relay service | Connect Facebook and YouTube to the service, then send one feed from OBS or use the service’s browser studio. The service forwards the stream to each destination. | Creators who want one encoder connection and a guided setup. | Destination and account-type support, plan limits, branding, permissions, latency, reliability, and whether the service starts each event automatically. |
| Direct multi-output encoder | Configure the encoder to send a separate output to each platform’s ingest endpoint. | Operators whose production software or hardware already supports multiple outputs. | Encoder capabilities, combined upload demand, destination-specific settings, separate event controls, and how a failure at one destination is handled. |
A relay generally means your setup uploads one outgoing feed; the relay distributes it onward. With direct outputs, your setup sends a feed to each destination, so plan for their combined outgoing bitrates. The reviewed official guidance does not establish one universal direct Facebook-and-YouTube configuration: check your encoder’s current instructions and Facebook’s Live Producer details for your account.
Restream as an example of a hosted relay
Restream’s guide describes connecting destinations and sending an OBS feed using a Restream-provided key. It says its free plan supports two simultaneous channels and Facebook profile streaming, while Pages and Groups require its Standard plan. These are vendor-published plan and eligibility claims that can change; confirm current terms and destination availability with Restream before relying on them. See Restream’s YouTube and Facebook setup guide.

Prepare both accounts before configuring OBS
- Enable YouTube live streaming. YouTube requires the channel to be verified and live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do this well before the event. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- Check Facebook access. Sign in to the account that will host the broadcast and confirm you can select the intended profile, Page, or Group in the relay service. Available destinations depend on the service’s current integrations and the permissions granted to your account.
- Keep stream keys private. A stream key identifies where incoming video is sent. Do not post it, share it publicly, or place it in a recording or screenshot.
- Test your internet connection. Upload capacity and stability matter. YouTube calls sufficient upload speed critical for successful high-quality simulcasting, but does not give one universal Mbps figure for every resolution, bitrate, and workflow. Test the setup you will use and leave headroom.
Set up OBS with a hosted relay
- Connect both destinations in the relay service. Sign in, add your YouTube channel and Facebook destination, and approve the requested account permissions. Select the profile, Page, Group, or YouTube event available to your account and the service.
- Create the relay stream. Choose the service’s encoder or RTMP workflow. Copy the stream key it provides for this broadcast.
- Enter the relay key in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the relay service if it appears in the service list, and enter the key supplied by the service. If OBS requires a server address, use the ingest details the relay provides. Do not substitute a YouTube key when the relay workflow calls for its own key.
- Set up the destinations. In the relay dashboard, turn on Facebook and YouTube for this broadcast and enter the event title or description where required. Check each destination’s preview or event status; the exact controls and whether each platform needs a separate final go-live action vary by integration.
- Start the encoder and confirm both broadcasts. Start streaming in OBS, then use the relay and platform controls required by your setup to publish the event. Verify that both destinations show the expected picture and audio rather than assuming that a successful OBS connection means both are live.
- Rehearse the full workflow. If the service and platform settings permit it, use a private or unlisted rehearsal. Check video, audio, destination previews, your plan for handling chat on both platforms, and whether ending the event closes both broadcasts as intended.
Restream’s documented workflow uses its own service selection and supplied key in OBS after destinations are connected. Follow the current instructions for whichever relay you choose, because labels and start behavior can change. Restream’s YouTube and Facebook instructions.
Use a direct multi-output encoder
In a direct setup, you do not send the production through a relay. Configure your encoder with the current ingest URL and stream key for each destination, then start the outputs. For YouTube, its documented process is to get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, enter them in the encoder, start sending the stream, and use Live Control Room controls where required. YouTube Help: Use an encoder to go live.

Exact Facebook Live Producer menus, key settings, event-start sequence, and supported options were not established here with current official Facebook instructions. Confirm those details in Facebook’s current interface for the account and destination you plan to use; do not assume that YouTube’s settings or controls apply to Facebook.
- Check that the encoder supports simultaneous outputs. Some workflows require a plug-in or additional configuration.
- Enter the correct ingest details for each destination and keep each key private.
- Budget for the combined outgoing rates from your connection and production setup. If one output fails, check and restart that destination separately if your encoder and event controls allow it.
- Confirm the status at each platform. An encoder can be sending successfully even when a destination has not been published or has an account-permission problem.
Set encoder video and network settings
YouTube’s surfaced encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, CBR bitrate encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted delivery to Google’s servers. These are YouTube recommendations, not universal Facebook requirements. Check the chosen relay’s current recommendations for its outgoing feeds and verify Facebook’s current requirements for a direct output. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Do not choose an upload-speed target from resolution alone. The required capacity varies with bitrate and whether you send one feed to a relay or multiple direct outputs. Use a stable connection, test the actual production settings, and leave enough headroom to avoid saturating the upload link.
Troubleshoot a broadcast that will not go live
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not offer the channel as a live destination. | Live streaming is not enabled, verification is incomplete, or first-time enablement is still processing. | Confirm channel verification and live-streaming status in YouTube Studio. If you just enabled it for the first time, allow up to 24 hours. |
| OBS connects, but one or both platforms remain offline. | A destination is disabled in the relay, a platform still requires a publish action, or the account lacks access to the selected destination. | Check each destination’s toggle, preview, event status, account permissions, and required go-live controls. |
| The relay or platform rejects the incoming stream. | The wrong key or ingest details may be in the encoder, or the key may have changed. | Copy the current key and server details from the service that owns the ingest endpoint. Keep keys private. |
| Video stutters, drops, or disconnects. | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable, particularly when sending multiple direct outputs. | Check connection stability and encoder output rates. For direct outputs, account for their combined bitrate; with a relay, check the single feed you send to it. |
| The stream reaches YouTube but not Facebook, or vice versa. | One destination may be unavailable, unauthorized, misconfigured, or subject to a separate start control. | Check that destination’s account connection, selected event, preview, and platform status independently. Consult the current relay and platform instructions. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, image, and other material in the program on both platforms. A license or permission that covers one platform or use may not cover another. Also check the current rules and account eligibility that apply to the specific Facebook and YouTube destinations; a working technical connection does not establish that a broadcast complies with platform policies.

YouTube’s live-streaming setup and encoder documentation cover technical eligibility and delivery, not a blanket approval for copyrighted or reused material. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming help and the platform’s applicable copyright and monetization policies before scheduling content.
Optional equipment and production planning
You do not need to buy a camera or microphone simply to send one production to two platforms. If your recording setup needs better audio or video, an encoder can accept external audio and video hardware; treat equipment as an optional production choice, not a multistreaming requirement. Plan in advance how someone will monitor comments on Facebook and YouTube, since the relay connection alone does not settle your chat workflow.
