Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To broadcast a prerecorded video as a live-style stream with AWS Elemental MediaLive, use an MP4 stored in Amazon S3 as the source, create a MediaLive MP4 pull input for that object, and send the channel’s HLS output to a delivery destination. An AWS walkthrough published July 27, 2021 demonstrates this pattern with AWS Elemental MediaStore as the HLS destination and CloudFront in the delivery architecture. It is an AWS-authored example, not a guarantee that its console labels, templates, or destinations remain unchanged.
Choose a live-style stream or on-demand playback
A live-style stream is useful when viewers should watch on a schedule or experience a channel-like feed. If viewers should be able to start the video whenever they choose, a video-on-demand workflow is usually a better fit. AWS’s MediaPackage VOD guide describes a separate process: prepare file-based content in S3, create a packaging group and configuration, then create an asset with playback endpoints. AWS describes an asset resource as the way MediaPackage “ingests, packages, and serves VOD content.” AWS: Getting started with VOD content delivery in MediaPackage.
For a live-style broadcast from a file, the AWS MediaLive example follows this path:
- Amazon S3: stores the prerecorded MP4.
- MediaLive: reads the file through an MP4 pull input and processes it for output.
- HLS destination: receives the channel output; the walkthrough uses a MediaStore container.
- Delivery: CloudFront appears in the example architecture. A social-channel output is also presented as an option.
MediaPackage is not a mandatory part of that MediaStore example. AWS documents a different live-to-VOD workflow in which MediaPackage ingests live HLS from an encoder such as MediaLive and extracts a VOD asset; AWS says MediaPackage is not required to deliver the resulting asset. AWS: Getting started with live-to-VOD content delivery in MediaPackage.

What you need before configuring MediaLive
- A prerecorded MP4 uploaded to an Amazon S3 bucket.
- An IAM role for the MediaLive channel, as required by the AWS walkthrough.
- A destination for the HLS output. The cited example creates an AWS Elemental MediaStore container and a CloudFront distribution.
- A decision about how viewers will receive the stream, such as through the illustrated delivery path or an optional social output.
The walkthrough’s example MediaLive input URL uses this form: s3ssl://YOUR_INPUT_BUCKET_NAME/CONTENT_OBJECT_KEY.mp4. This illustrates the S3 object reference used in that particular MP4 pull-input setup; it should not be treated as a universal or independently verified current requirement for every MediaLive configuration. AWS’s broader guide explains the roles of upstream sources and downstream systems in live workflows, but does not establish exact current settings for this prerecorded-file case. AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide.
Set up the prerecorded-video stream
The following sequence follows AWS’s July 2021 walkthrough. Use it as a reference architecture and verify current console fields, templates, regional service availability, and output choices before deploying.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Upload the MP4 to S3. Create or choose an S3 bucket, then upload the video. Note the bucket name and object key; those identify the source file used by the input.
- Prepare the HLS destination. The example creates a MediaStore container and a CloudFront distribution. Configure the destination details needed for the channel’s HLS output using the current AWS console and service documentation.
- Create a MediaLive MP4 pull input. In the MediaLive console, create an input for the S3-hosted MP4, using the example’s
s3ssl://object URL form. Select or configure the IAM role needed for the channel to access the source. - Create the channel and output group. The article demonstrates a “Live Event–HLS” template, a SINGLE_PIPELINE channel, and an HLS output directed to MediaStore. These are details of the 2021 example; check whether the same template and labels are available in your account and region.
- Attach the input and review the output. Associate the MP4 pull input with the channel and verify that the HLS destination and channel configuration are consistent with your intended delivery path.
- Start the channel and verify playback. Start the MediaLive channel, then check that HLS output is reaching its destination and that viewers can receive it through the distribution path you configured.
For the detailed AWS-authored walkthrough, see How to live stream pre-recorded video using AWS Elemental MediaLive (July 27, 2021). Its exact console labels and configuration should be treated as historical examples, not current guarantees.
Choose the workflow that matches the viewing experience
| Goal | Workflow indicated by AWS documentation | What viewers receive |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast the prerecorded file as a live-style stream | MediaLive MP4 pull input from S3, with HLS output to a destination such as MediaStore in the cited example. | A live-style channel or event, delivered through the chosen origin and distribution path. |
| Let viewers start a stored program when they choose | MediaPackage VOD: S3 file-based content, packaging group and configuration, then an asset with playback endpoints. | VOD playback endpoints rather than a scheduled live-style event. |
| Turn a live stream into a VOD asset | AWS’s live-to-VOD flow uses MediaPackage to ingest live HLS from an encoder such as MediaLive and extract an asset. | A resulting VOD asset; AWS says MediaPackage is not required to deliver that asset. |
These are different service flows, not interchangeable output settings. AWS’s MediaPackage v2 documentation lists HLS and CMAF as supported live-ingest inputs for MediaPackage v2; those requirements describe that service’s inputs and should not be applied to the MediaLive MP4 pull input in the older walkthrough. AWS: Supported inputs and outputs – AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2.

Cost considerations
The 2021 AWS walkthrough gives historical example costs of $1.63 per hour without the Twitch setup and $2.05 per hour with it, for the AWS Ireland Region. The examples exclude view-based CloudFront data-transfer-out charges. They are not current AWS prices or a complete estimate for a deployment. Current regional prices and service availability are not established here; check AWS pricing for each service and region you plan to use, including channel runtime, origin or packaging, and viewer delivery.
