You can listen to the Microsoft–Project Gutenberg Open Audiobook Collection at the official collection page. It offers thousands of public-domain books converted into AI-generated neural text-to-speech audiobooks through a collaboration involving Project Gutenberg, Microsoft, and MIT. No audiobook subscription is required, although the narration is synthetic and the exact playback or download options vary by title.
Start listening in your browser
- Open the Open Audiobook Collection.
- Find the Listen section.
- Browse or search for an author or title.
- Select a book and use the page’s audio controls to play, pause, seek, and adjust volume.
- If the player offers speed, voice, or other settings, use those controls for that title. The interface is subject to change, and not every recording exposes the same options.
The collection page is hosted on a Microsoft Azure Blob Storage address rather than directly on gutenberg.org. It is the project page linked by Microsoft and Project Gutenberg, not necessarily an unofficial mirror. Project Gutenberg’s main site also links to it from its Audio Books area. The Microsoft project page links to the same listening collection from its description of the work: Large-Scale Automatic Audiobook Creation.
Do not assume that every title has an MP3 download or works offline. Check the controls and links attached to the individual title. If a download is offered, use the official link rather than an unofficial downloader.
What the Microsoft collaboration created
Project Gutenberg supplies its large collection of public-domain ebooks. Microsoft contributed neural text-to-speech and automated processing that turns ebook text into spoken audio, while MIT is named as a collaborator on the collection page. The result is distributed as free, open audiobooks rather than as a Microsoft subscription product.
#1 Best Overall
The work was documented in the 2023 Interspeech Show and Tell paper Large-Scale Automatic Audiobook Creation; the paper record is dated September 7, 2023 at arXiv. Microsoft’s description says the project contributed more than 5,000 open-license audiobooks. Project Gutenberg’s current catalog describes the newer set more cautiously as almost 5,000 computer-generated titles. Because catalog totals can change, “thousands” or “almost 5,000” is more accurate than treating 5,000 as a permanent count.
The voices are AI-generated neural text-to-speech, not human narrators. They can sound more natural than older automated systems, but pronunciation, parsing, emphasis, names, foreign words, poetry, footnotes, and stage directions can still cause mistakes. The collection’s own notice warns that recordings may contain errors, strange pronunciations, offensive language, or material unsuitable for some audiences.
Are these audiobooks really free?
Access to the collection does not require a purchase, paid subscription, or registration on the main Project Gutenberg site. Project Gutenberg presents its ebooks and linked audiobook resources as freely available, with the underlying texts generally in the U.S. public domain.
Rank #2
“Free” does not mean that every recording is public domain everywhere. Copyright terms differ by country, and a particular audio file can have additional conditions. Before downloading, sharing, or republishing a recording, read the title’s rights information and Project Gutenberg’s permissions guidance. A U.S. public-domain status should not be treated as worldwide clearance.

Project Gutenberg’s audio links combine several distinct sources. The Microsoft collection is only one of them.
| Source | Narration | Relationship to the Microsoft project | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Audiobook Collection | Neural text-to-speech | Microsoft–Project Gutenberg–MIT collaboration | Large selection and quick browser access |
| Project Gutenberg human-read titles | Human readers | Separate Project Gutenberg audio group | More natural performance |
| LibriVox | Human volunteers | Separate volunteer service linked by Project Gutenberg | Human narration and multiple editions |
| Project Gutenberg 2003 computer-generated titles | Older text-to-speech | Separate older collection | Backup access to older recordings |
On its current audio information page, Project Gutenberg describes approximately 662 human-read titles, almost 5,000 newer computer-generated titles, and 386 titles in the 2003 computer-generated set. These are catalog descriptions, not fixed inventory guarantees. Choose the neural collection when breadth matters; choose LibriVox or another human-read title when acting, pacing, and interpretation matter more.

What books are available?
The catalog is concentrated on older literature and other works whose U.S. copyrights have expired. Project Gutenberg’s catalog includes classics such as Pride and Prejudice, Moby-Dick, The Odyssey, Crime and Punishment, and Shakespeare, but an ebook listing does not guarantee a prepared audiobook.
- Search Project Gutenberg by title or author.
- Use popular-book and reading-list pages to discover likely candidates.
- Check the audiobook links separately from the ebook record.
- Search the Open Audiobook Collection itself rather than assuming every ebook has audio.
If no prepared audiobook exists: use Microsoft Edge Read aloud
Edge can speak the text of a Project Gutenberg ebook when no prepared recording is available. This is browser text-to-speech, not a downloaded audiobook created by the Microsoft–Project Gutenberg project.
- Open the ebook in Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more.
- Choose More tools.
- Select Read aloud.
- To hear only part of the book, select the passage, then right-click (or press and hold) and choose Read aloud selection.
Microsoft says Read aloud works online and offline, although fewer voices are available offline. It is also available in the Edge mobile app for iOS and Android. Labels and availability can vary by device, market, and browser version. Details are in Microsoft’s Read aloud guide.

The book list or player is blank
Embedded scripts may have failed, a privacy extension may be blocking the player, the collection may have changed, or the mobile layout may differ. Reload first, then try a current desktop browser. If you trust the page, allow scripts or embedded content for that site only. You can also enter through Project Gutenberg’s audiobook links or use Edge Read aloud on the ebook.
The ebook exists but no audiobook does
That is normal: Project Gutenberg’s ebook catalog is much larger than its prepared-audio catalog. Use Edge Read aloud or look for a human-read LibriVox edition.
The narration sounds strange
Machine-generated speech can mispronounce names and archaic or foreign terms, parse punctuation oddly, or flatten dramatic passages. Try another edition or a human-read recording if performance quality is important.
Best Value
The content is offensive or outdated
Historical books can contain language and ideas that are offensive today. The collection warning covers the source material as well as possible narration errors; preview a title when appropriate.
You need offline listening
Verify the individual title’s download or platform link. The collection should not be treated as universally downloadable or offline-ready.
Rights, geography, and sharing
Project Gutenberg focuses on works in the U.S. public domain. A book or recording that is lawful to access in the United States may still be protected elsewhere. Check local law before downloading or distributing files internationally, and consult Project Gutenberg’s permissions page before republishing material.
For technical problems or suspected recording errors, the collection points users to its issue-reporting link.

Use the Open Audiobook Collection for broad, no-fee access to thousands of AI-narrated public-domain books. Use LibriVox or Project Gutenberg’s human-read titles when expressive narration matters, and use Edge’s Settings and more → More tools → Read aloud path when a book has no prepared audio.
