Short answer: You cannot add Netflix as a playable Plex library or watch Netflix inside Plex. You can select Netflix in Plex’s streaming-service preferences so Plex Discover can show where a title is available and, on supported devices, hand you off to the Netflix app. Playback and your Netflix sign-in stay in Netflix.
What “adding Netflix to Plex” actually means
Plex has no supported Netflix channel, plug-in, or setting that imports Netflix’s catalog into Plex Media Server. A Plex server does not proxy, transcode, download, or host Netflix streams. Plex’s Discover feature can list Netflix as an outside service, show availability information, and offer a route to Netflix; the video does not play inside Plex.
That distinction separates four different Plex functions:
- Personal libraries: Plex Media Server organizes and plays media files you own or are authorized to store. A Netflix subscription does not authorize importing Netflix titles into that library. See Plex’s explanation of its media server.
- Discover: Search across accessible personal servers, Plex’s own services, and selected outside streaming services. It is a discovery and routing layer, not a universal playback container.
- Universal Watchlist: Keep track of titles across services and check their available sources later. It does not turn those services into Plex playback.
- Plex streaming and rentals: Plex offers its own free, ad-supported Movies & Shows and live TV. Eligible rentals are also available in supported regions and devices. These are separate from Netflix; see the Plex on-demand FAQ and rental information.
Set Netflix as a service in Plex Discover
You need a Plex account and a current Plex app or Plex Web. For Netflix playback, you also need a Netflix subscription and a separate Netflix sign-in; install the Netflix app on the device if you want Plex to hand off to it. Plex’s labels can vary by client and version.

- Open a Plex app while signed in.
- Go to Settings → Streaming Services. Some clients call this Manage Your Streaming Services; Plex documents that wording for Plex HTPC and Plex for Roku.
- Select Netflix and any other services you use.
- Choose Save or Done.
This preference helps Discover show service availability. It does not connect your Netflix credentials to Plex, authenticate Netflix playback, or bring Netflix video into Plex.
If you cannot find the setting
In Plex Web, open the account menu, choose Account, then Online Media Sources. Review Discover and outside-service availability settings there. If the option is missing, try another current Plex client, update the app, and confirm Discover is enabled. Managed accounts, client availability, and region can affect what appears. Search for the title directly even if Netflix is not listed as a preference.
Find a title and open it on Netflix
- Search Plex for a movie or show, then open its universal details page.
- Check More Ways to Watch or the availability list for Netflix.
- Select Netflix if it is offered. On supported platforms Plex may open the Netflix app; on others it may search for or display the app instead.
- If the handoff does not work, open Netflix yourself and search for the title there.
A listing is an availability indication, not a guarantee that the title will play for your account. Catalog rights and access can vary by country, date, Netflix plan, device, profile restrictions, and licensing changes. Plex cannot control Netflix’s catalog or confirm every account-specific restriction.

Keep titles in Plex’s Universal Watchlist
Plex’s Universal Watchlist can hold movies and shows regardless of where they are available. Add a title from Plex search results, its universal details page, or supported mobile and TV grids. Later, return to the watchlist and check the title’s current availability before opening a service.
Watchlist tracking is not the same as a unified playback queue. Watching a title in an outside service may not update Plex in the same way as playback through Plex, and outside-service watch status may require manual watchlist management. Plex’s optional watch-state and ratings synchronization is not a promise of Netflix watch-history synchronization.
What Plex Pass does—and does not—add
Plex Pass does not unlock Netflix or add Netflix titles to Plex. It is a premium option for features around personal media, such as remote streaming, downloads, and hardware-accelerated transcoding. Why a Netflix link may be missing or fail
Netflix is not listed in Streaming Services
- The setting may be under a renamed menu or unavailable in that client.
- Discover or outside-service availability may be disabled in account settings.
- A managed account, region, or device may restrict access to the feature.
- You may be looking in Plex Media Server settings rather than Plex app or account settings.
Try Plex Web or another current client, check Account → Online Media Sources, update the app, and search for the title directly.
Netflix appears, but selecting it does nothing
App handoff depends on the platform. Install the official Netflix app on the device and sign in to Netflix separately. If Plex cannot deep-link on that device, open Netflix and search for the title manually. Use a device with reliable app-to-app linking if that convenience matters.

The title is listed but unavailable to you
Check the Netflix app directly. The Plex result may not reflect a regional catalog change, a plan or profile restriction, or a device limitation for your account.

Unofficial Netflix plug-ins, scraping, DRM workarounds, or download-and-import methods are not supported alternatives. They may break, risk account security, conflict with service terms, or raise copyright and DRM issues. Use the official Netflix and Plex apps rather than sharing credentials with an unofficial tool.
What Plex checks when you use Discover
Plex says it does not send complete personal-server library lists to Plex merely for Discover. When you open a universal details page, the app can ask accessible Plex servers whether a matching item exists. This is separate from Netflix playback: Discover can help locate a title or point to a service, but it does not receive Netflix’s video stream.
