FFmpeg can send a continuous stream to YouTube without saving a local recording. When disk usage keeps growing, check every output in the FFmpeg command and its surrounding service setup: a recording filename, HLS/DASH segments, report file, or wrapper-level log redirection may be writing to the VPS even while another output sends video to YouTube.
Find what is writing to disk
Start with the exact command used by the running service—not just a command copied from a setup guide. Check its working directory, service wrapper, and all configured outputs. FFmpeg can have multiple outputs, so a network destination does not rule out a separate local file. Its command-line documentation notes that options apply to the next specified file; read the command in order and identify which options belong to each input and output (FFmpeg command-line documentation).
- Recording output: look for an output filename or path ending in a media extension, in addition to the YouTube network URL.
- HLS or DASH output: look for a playlist or manifest and a directory of media segments. Segment files can accumulate if old files are not removed.
- FFmpeg report: check whether
FFREPORTis set. FFmpeg documents this environment variable as a way to write a report file (FFmpeg command-line documentation). - Service and shell logging: inspect the service definition and wrapper for redirection to a file. System and service logs or temporary files may also consume space independently of FFmpeg’s media outputs.
Use disk-usage tools available on your VPS to identify which directory or files are growing, then match those paths to the command and service configuration. Do not assume that deleting files or adding a cleanup schedule fixes the cause: a running process may recreate them, or a cleanup rule may remove files the stream still needs.
Stream to YouTube without a local recording
If you do not need a local archive, configure the YouTube ingestion endpoint as the FFmpeg output and remove unintended file outputs. YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS and HLS as live ingestion options; the network stream itself does not require a local recording (YouTube live encoder settings).

Preserve the input, stream mapping, encoding, reconnect behavior, and service restart settings your actual setup needs. There is no safe universal replacement command without knowing the input type, codecs, installed FFmpeg build, output protocol, and service wrapper. Handle stream keys as secrets: do not put them in public examples or expose them through logs.
If you need local HLS files, make retention deliberate
HLS creates a playlist and media segments. FFmpeg’s HLS muxer provides playlist and segment options that can control a rolling window and the removal of segments that leave it; consult the FFmpeg formats documentation for the options supported by your build. A rolling playlist by itself should not be treated as proof that old files are deleted. Verify the configured deletion behavior and observe the directory during a test.

YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide requires TS segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. This is a YouTube ingestion requirement, not a general guarantee that every local segment directory is bounded or cleaned up (YouTube HLS setup). YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream.
Choose the output that matches the job

Resolution and bitrate settings affect the encoded stream and the capacity needed to send it; they do not cap disk usage from an output that is retained indefinitely. To limit storage, remove unnecessary file outputs or configure bounded retention for the files you intentionally keep.

Check the installed FFmpeg version and test before going live
FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, and the project recommends consulting locally installed documentation when using an older version (FFmpeg documentation). Confirm that the options you plan to use exist in the VPS’s installed build, rather than assuming current online syntax applies unchanged.
- Run a test stream before the scheduled broadcast and use similar audio and motion to the real program.
- Watch the output directory and VPS disk usage during the test. Confirm that only intended files appear and that rolling HLS segments are actually removed as expected.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the ingest is stable. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before starting a live stream (YouTube live encoder settings).
- After changing output or retention settings, restart the service using your VPS’s actual service manager and repeat the test. Verify the running command and observed files, not only the saved configuration.
Common disk-growth problems
- The disk fills even though YouTube is live: a second output may be recording locally. Inspect every output destination and remove the local one if no archive is needed.
- HLS playlist stays short but the directory grows: playlist length and file deletion are separate concerns. Verify the muxer’s segment-removal option and behavior with the installed version.
- A report or log file grows: inspect
FFREPORT, shell redirection, and service logging. Change only the setting responsible for the file; diagnostics may be useful, but should have an intentional retention policy. - Disk usage rises in a different directory: the cause may be OS/service logs or temporary files rather than FFmpeg’s media output. Identify the growing path before applying cleanup, because the appropriate fix depends on the VPS distribution and service setup.
- The stream breaks after cleanup: the cleanup may have removed a segment or playlist still needed by the active workflow. Stop and correct the retention configuration, then retest before the next live session.
