A full Windows restart stops Wirecast and ends its active stream. Do not count on Wirecast to relaunch and restore a live broadcast unattended: Telestream’s reviewed documentation describes opening the last show document at startup and making host reconnect attempts, but does not establish automatic relaunch and resumption of a live output. Schedule updates outside broadcast hours, then have an operator reopen the show, verify it, and explicitly start the stream.
What happens to a Wirecast stream during a Windows restart?
A restart closes running applications, including Wirecast, so its active output stops. Reopening a saved Wirecast document is a separate action from restoring a live broadcast. The documentation reviewed does not establish that Wirecast will automatically reopen, verify the show’s sources and destination, and start the output after Windows restarts.
Telestream’s official documentation index lists Windows help and user guides for Wirecast 16 and earlier releases. Its version history identifies Wirecast 16.5.4 as the current public version, released September 16, 2026. Because controls and behavior may differ by release, check the guidance for your installed version rather than assuming an older guide describes current menus. Identify the software and system versions
Record your installed Wirecast version and Windows version. Use Telestream’s documentation index to locate the matching Windows help or user guide. This matters because the specific startup and reconnect controls described below come from a Wirecast 11 Windows guide, not confirmation of current Wirecast 16 behavior.

Prepare the show for a deliberate restart
- Save the Wirecast document and confirm you can open the correct show after reboot.
- Check that media files and other assets are available from their expected locations.
- Confirm cameras, microphones, audio devices, capture hardware, and network connections will be available after Windows starts.
- Make sure you can access the intended streaming destination and its credentials or stream key.
- Choose a maintenance window and arrange for an operator to verify the show and start the broadcast afterward.
These are prudent operational checks, not a Telestream-verified automatic recovery procedure. An update can end the current broadcast; plan for downtime rather than promising an uninterrupted stream.
What Wirecast’s startup and reconnect settings do—and do not do
The Wirecast 11 Windows User Guide describes an Open last document on startup preference. When enabled, it opens the last document used when Wirecast starts. The guide also describes Maximum Reconnect Attempts, which sets how many times Wirecast tries to reconnect to a host provider.

Neither control establishes that Wirecast starts automatically after Windows boots, that its show is ready to broadcast, or that a live output resumes without an operator. Reconnect attempts concern trying to reconnect to a host; they do not guarantee success or determine whether the platform’s live event or session remains valid. Treat these as legacy-guide descriptions, and confirm current behavior and menu names in the documentation for your installed release.
Restart and verify the stream safely
- Schedule the update outside broadcast hours. Allow time for Windows to restart and for a person to check the system before the next planned program.
- After Windows starts, open Wirecast and the saved show. If your version offers a startup preference for opening the last document, it may help open the show, but do not treat that as an instruction to go live.
- Verify the production inputs. Check the intended cameras, audio, media, capture devices, and scene or shot before output begins.
- Verify the destination and output configuration. Confirm the correct host, event or session, stream credentials, and output settings. A successful connection attempt alone does not confirm that the right event is active.
- Explicitly start the broadcast. Monitor the output and the streaming platform’s event status to confirm the show is live in the intended place.
Choose a recovery approach
| Approach | Unattended recovery confidence | Risk to manage | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schedule updates outside broadcast hours and have an operator reopen and check the show | Does not rely on unattended recovery; the operator confirms readiness | Downtime if the restart or checks take longer than planned | Most planned updates, especially when the correct scene, sources, and destination matter |
| Build a controlled managed-PC recovery workflow with Windows startup behavior and an operator check | Not established by the reviewed Telestream material; do not assume Wirecast will resume automatically | Accidentally broadcasting the wrong scene or destination, or discovering unavailable sources after reboot | Teams that can maintain and verify a managed setup and accept the need for a human check |
The reviewed Telestream material does not validate a particular Windows Task Scheduler or service recipe for automatically restarting Wirecast and restoring a live output. Do not treat such a recipe as Telestream-approved or as proof that a broadcast will resume safely.

Troubleshooting after an update or restart
Wirecast does not open or crashes on startup
Confirm the Wirecast and Windows versions, then consult the matching Telestream documentation and support. Telestream’s version history records Windows-specific issues in earlier releases, including startup crashes, so a failure after an update is not necessarily a mistaken setting.
The show opens, but a camera, audio source, or capture device is missing
Check whether Windows recognizes the device and whether it is connected and available to Wirecast. Verify the show’s selected input and audio sources before going live; do not assume that reopening the document restores every device connection.

Wirecast cannot reconnect to the host
Check network access, the destination credentials, and the streaming platform’s event or session status. The legacy guide documents a configurable number of host reconnect attempts, not guaranteed reconnection. If the output cannot connect, verify whether the intended event is still valid and explicitly start or configure the output as needed for your version.
A firewall warning appears when the document starts
Telestream’s version history has documented firewall warnings at document startup in prior releases. Check the warning against your installed version’s documentation and Windows firewall configuration; do not dismiss it without confirming that Wirecast can reach the intended host.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos, rather than resume a camera-based Wirecast production, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It does not go live from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo keeps the uploaded-video stream running in the cloud.
