Balance the audio of each clip or source in Wirecast, then set the overall stream level and check transitions in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. A master-volume adjustment affects the combined mix; it will not correct a quiet clip relative to a loud one. Keep monitoring after the stream begins, too.

Why playlist clips can sound uneven

Videos can have different recording levels, so one may sound much louder or quieter than the next even when both play through the same Wirecast output. Matching peak-meter readings alone does not guarantee matching perceived loudness: peaks do not describe the whole loudness of a programme.

Wirecast supports playlist-based production and audio mixing. However, the available sources do not establish that Wirecast automatically loudness-normalizes every playlist item. Exact controls and their placement can also vary by Wirecast version, so treat older control names as concepts and confirm the interface in your installed release.

Prepare and balance the clips

1. Listen before going live

Preview representative loud and quiet sections of every clip, including the beginning and end. Pay particular attention to the handoff between items: a transition can expose a level difference that is less obvious when clips are auditioned separately.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Adjust individual sources where available

In Wirecast, look for a source-level audio control for the relevant clip or source and adjust it to balance that material against the rest of the programme. Telestream’s December 2012 Wirecast for YouTube guide distinguishes individual “Live Audio” controls, which affect selected sources, from “Stream Volume,” which affects the combined stream. The labels or layout may have changed; confirm them in your version rather than relying on that legacy guide as current click-by-click instructions. Telestream’s Wirecast for YouTube guide

If playlist items share a source and you cannot adjust their levels independently in your installed version, prepare the files before importing them: balance their audio in an editing or audio application, export the corrected files, then replace the playlist versions. This is a practical alternative workflow, not a Wirecast feature confirmed by the cited documentation. Preparing files takes more effort up front, but can make the balance more repeatable in future streams; live source adjustments are easier to change on the fly but may need to be repeated.

3. Set the overall stream level last

Once the clips are balanced against one another, use the master stream control to set the overall output. Since a master adjustment moves all stream audio together, it cannot by itself fix relative differences between clips. Avoid raising the master just to make one quiet item louder; that also raises the louder items.

Test transitions in YouTube before the event

When practical, start a private or unlisted test stream and listen to the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check the changeovers between clips as well as individual passages, then make cautious adjustments if the mix is too loud, too quiet, or uneven. YouTube advises creators to preview the stream and “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder

Monitor levels during the live stream

Keep an eye on Wirecast’s meters and listen for changes at playlist boundaries. Telestream’s Wirecast version history describes meters turning yellow at -6 dB and red above -1 dB. Treat those as thresholds reported in that version-history entry, not as a universal target or a guarantee about every current release; check the behavior in your installed version. Telestream Wirecast version history

Meter readings can help you spot peaks, but they do not establish that clips will sound equally loud to viewers. Use listening checks as well as meters, and adjust cautiously so a fix for one passage does not make the rest of the programme too loud.

Troubleshooting uneven playlist audio

  • One clip is consistently quieter or louder: adjust that clip’s source-level audio control if your version exposes one. If it does not, balance the file before importing it rather than relying on the master level.
  • Every clip is too loud or too quiet: adjust the overall stream level after source balancing. This changes all stream audio together.
  • The handoff sounds abrupt: listen to the outgoing clip’s end and the incoming clip’s start in the YouTube preview, then correct the relevant source or prepare the files before the event.
  • The meter looks safe but loudness still feels uneven: do not treat matched peaks as matched perceived loudness. Compare representative passages by listening.
  • Your controls do not match older instructions: Wirecast labels and placement can depend on version. Use the installed release’s interface and documentation; the detailed individual-versus-master explanation cited here is from a December 2012 guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not replace Wirecast’s source-balancing workflow; prepare your audio so the playlist itself is consistent before upload. Nothing has to stay on at home, uploaded quality streams as made up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
