VLC’s playlist is supposed to continue to the next queued item when the current media stops, provided another item is present and VLC has not been explicitly stopped. If it quits after an error, check the playlist first, then identify whether the failed entry is a local file or a YouTube live URL. The two failures have different causes, and VLC’s ability to extract YouTube streams can change when YouTube changes its protocols.
Check that VLC has another item to play
- Open VLC’s playlist view and confirm that the intended videos—including the item after the one that failed—are actually listed. A playlist cannot advance to an item that was never queued.
- After the error, note whether VLC is stopped or whether the next entry starts after a short delay. The VLC playlist API describes the default stopped-media action as “Continue (or stop if there is no next media), default behavior.” This is a code comment in VLC’s playlist API header, not a promise that every error in every version will be recovered identically.
- Make sure you did not press Stop or otherwise explicitly stop playback. If the next item is present and VLC still does not proceed, continue with the checks below.
Diagnose the failed entry
If it is a local video file
- Try opening the file by itself in VLC. If it fails independently, the file may be unreadable, unavailable at that path, or otherwise the source of the error.
- Check that the playlist points to the file’s current location and that the file is accessible. A moved file or invalid path can leave an entry in the playlist that VLC cannot play.
- If the standalone file opens, inspect the playlist entry and try playing the next item directly. This helps distinguish an issue with one entry from a problem affecting the whole playlist.
If it is a YouTube live URL
VLC’s YouTube playback can fail when YouTube changes its transmission protocols. VideoLAN’s FAQ advises checking the VLC version and describes replacing the YouTube Lua playlist script, but that page is old. Treat its script-replacement steps as potentially stale, not as a guaranteed current fix. Check guidance that applies to your installed VLC version before changing files.
A VideoLAN developer mailing-list discussion dated 2026-01-06 included one contributor’s report that the script still worked for his YouTube live streams. That individual experience does not establish general or continuing compatibility.
Why repeated errors may not advance immediately
A 2019 VideoLAN developer patch discussion addressed repeated playback errors under repeat or loop behavior. It described adding a pause between retries to avoid a rapid, endless error loop: 100 ms, 200 ms, 400 ms, 800 ms, 1.6 seconds, then 3.2 seconds after further consecutive errors. The discussion is historical implementation context, not evidence that every current VLC build uses those exact delays or exposes them as a setting.

VLC’s general playlist behavior and YouTube URL extraction are separate issues. Even if the playlist is set up to continue, a change on YouTube’s side can prevent VLC from opening the live URL in the first place.
Use YouTube’s player when VLC’s YouTube support is unstable
If the main goal is continuous playback of a YouTube playlist—not specifically playing it inside VLC—YouTube’s own player offers a platform-side fallback. YouTube Help explains how to loop a video or playlist in its player: Loop videos or playlists on YouTube. VLC’s support for a direct YouTube live-playlist URL and automatic advancement depends on the VLC version and is not guaranteed by the reviewed documentation.
