How to Keep OBS Running During Scheduled Power Cuts in India

A practical India-focused guide to backing up an OBS computer and network equipment, choosing UPS runtime, protecting local recordings and testing before a scheduled power cut.

To keep OBS running through a scheduled power cut, connect the computer to a UPS sized for its actual streaming load and the outage time you need to bridge. For a live stream, put the modem, router and any other essential network equipment on backup power too. A UPS can only support its connected load for its available battery runtime; it cannot cover a longer outage or an independent internet failure. Test the complete setup before you rely on it.

What needs backup power for an OBS stream?

OBS must keep running on the computer, and the computer must retain an internet connection to send a live stream. That means backup power may be needed for more than the PC:

  • OBS computer: Include the power draw of the components and peripherals you need during the session. A streaming PC may draw more while encoding than it does at idle.
  • Network equipment: Back up the modem, router and any other powered equipment in the connection path. If the router loses power, keeping the PC on will not preserve the stream.
  • Other essential equipment: Include any powered device your setup depends on, such as an external network device. Do not count equipment as protected unless it is connected to backup power.

Even if all of these devices remain powered, a local ISP outage or a failure elsewhere on the network can still interrupt the stream.

Choose a UPS for the actual load and outage duration

There is no responsible universal VA or watt rating for an OBS computer. The right capacity depends on your computer’s load during the session, the network equipment you need, and how long you want the setup to run—or how much time you need to shut down safely.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check the load during a realistic session. Measure or check the computer’s power draw while OBS is doing the work you plan to do. Add the modem, router and other necessary equipment.
  2. Set a target runtime. Decide whether the aim is to bridge a brief interruption, continue through a known outage window, or keep the stream alive only long enough to shut down safely.
  3. Compare UPS specifications against both figures. Check the UPS’s supported output and its runtime at a load close to your combined equipment draw. A headline capacity alone does not establish how long your particular setup will run.
  4. Check compatibility and transfer behavior. Confirm that the UPS output suits the equipment. An offline UPS switches to battery after a mains interruption; BharatSkills/DGT training material describes a transfer time of a few milliseconds for this type. Whether a given PC rides through that transfer should be confirmed with the actual equipment.
  5. Check battery condition. Runtime depends on the battery as well as the load. A battery that has aged or degraded may not provide the runtime you expect; follow the manufacturer’s maintenance and replacement guidance.

For an outage expected to last longer than the UPS can support the combined load, a UPS is a bridge, not a guarantee that OBS will stay live throughout. The BharatSkills/DGT training text describes an offline UPS as a way to continue work until normal power returns or to shut down the PC safely.

Prepare OBS and the local recording

Use MKV for recordings that might be interrupted

If you are recording locally while streaming, set OBS to record in MKV. OBS recommends MKV because an ungraceful stop is less likely to corrupt the entire recording file. If you need an MP4 for editing or sharing, use OBS’s Remux Recordings tool after recording. MKV protects against a recording-file failure mode; it does not power the PC or preserve unsaved work. See the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.

Know what automatic reconnect can and cannot do

OBS has an automatic reconnect setting for stream interruptions. It can help when a connection drops temporarily, but it cannot keep OBS encoding when the computer has no power, and it is not a guarantee that a stream will resume after the PC has shut down. OBS’s overview guide documents the reconnect option; its connection troubleshooting guide explains that dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a network problem between the computer and the ingest server, which may have causes outside OBS.

Test the whole setup before the scheduled cut

  1. Connect the OBS computer and every network device needed for the stream to the intended UPS.
  2. Start a realistic OBS session, including local recording if you plan to record.
  3. Simulate a brief mains interruption in a safe, controlled way. Check that the computer continues running and that the router and modem remain powered. Do not perform a test that could endanger people or equipment.
  4. Confirm the internet connection remains available and check OBS for disconnections, dropped frames or other stream-health warnings.
  5. Check that the local recording file continues to grow and can be opened. YouTube recommends testing the setup, leaving upload-bandwidth headroom, monitoring stream health and checking that the local archive is growing; see its streaming tips.
  6. Repeat the test for a duration that gives you meaningful confidence in the runtime you need. A brief transfer test alone does not prove that the UPS battery will last through a longer outage.

What to check after power or internet is lost

  • The PC switches off: The UPS may be overloaded, unable to support the load, out of battery, or incompatible with the equipment’s transfer behavior. Recheck the combined load, runtime specifications and battery condition.
  • The PC stays on but the stream drops: Check whether the modem and router also had power, then check the internet connection. OBS reconnect can help with a temporary stream disconnection, but it cannot fix a lost network path.
  • OBS has stopped after a full shutdown: Do not assume the original event resumed automatically. Reopen OBS and check the live event in YouTube Studio; consult YouTube’s live stream settings guidance before starting or managing the stream again.
  • The recording will not open normally: If it was recorded in MKV, try OBS’s Remux Recordings tool to create an MP4 copy. Remuxing does not restore material that was never written to the file.

Check local outage information in India

Scheduled supply notices and arrangements vary by state and distribution utility; there is no single outage schedule that applies uniformly across India. The Ministry of Power says Rule 10 of the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 provides for 24×7 supply by distribution licensees while allowing a Commission to specify lower hours for some categories. The ministry also states that supply and distribution fall within the purview of the relevant State Government and distribution utility. This does not mean scheduled maintenance outages cannot occur. Check the announced schedule from your own utility. See the Ministry of Power release.
