How to Keep OBS Audio From Clipping in a Relaxation Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop OBS audio clipping, find the first stage where the sound distorts and lower its gain there—starting with the microphone, interface, or mixer. Then check operating-system and app levels, set the OBS mixer level with headroom, and use a limiter last in the filter chain as a safety ceiling. A limiter or lower OBS fader cannot repair distortion that has already occurred upstream.

Why OBS audio clips—and what the meter tells you

Digital clipping happens when a signal exceeds what a stage in the audio path can reproduce accurately. OBS’s technical guide says stream or recording audio must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping. The OBS mixer displays a moving peak program meter; its peak-hold marker keeps the loudest level visible for 20 seconds, so watch it during speech, transitions, and alerts rather than judging the quiet ambience alone. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

OBS’s technical audio guide gives -20 dBFS as an alignment level and -9 dBFS as the permitted maximum in its meter documentation. Treat these as OBS-specific setup references, not a universal loudness target for every platform or stream. The guide notes that OBS currently uses a sample-peak meter; oversampling could provide a more accurate indication of maximum peaks. Leave room for unexpected loud moments, particularly when quiet ambience is punctuated by speech or alerts. OBS Technical Audio Specs

In the mixer, green, yellow, and red provide level cues. OBS says speech can reach the lower end of red, while background music and effects should stay in green. The peak-hold indicator helps reveal a brief peak that has passed before you can inspect the meter.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Find the first stage that distorts

  1. Listen as early in the chain as possible. Monitor the microphone or interface directly, such as through its headphone output, then compare that sound with OBS monitoring and a test recording. If it is already distorted before it reaches OBS, reduce gain at that earlier stage. OBS’s mixer guide puts it plainly: “Always start at the device in question.” OBS Audio Mixer Guide
  2. Check source and hardware controls. For a microphone, inspect its physical gain control if it has one. For an interface or mixer, check the input/channel gain and master controls, and consult its manual or manufacturer software where necessary. Reduce the control at the point where distortion first appears.
  3. Check software levels next. Inspect the operating-system recording level and the specific application’s input or output level. Their effects vary by setup, so test rather than assume a particular slider changes the signal in the way you expect.
  4. Adjust the OBS mixer fader only after the earlier stages are clean. The fader lowers the level OBS sends onward, but it cannot restore a waveform clipped by a microphone preamp, interface, mixer, or other upstream stage.

Set levels for a quiet stream with occasional peaks

Keep the OBS Audio Mixer visible while you test. Play the actual ambience and speak at the loudest level you expect to use; also trigger any transition or alert that may occur live. Watch both the moving meter and its peak-hold marker. A calm baseline does not guarantee headroom for a sudden breath, louder phrase, or notification sound.

Use the documented OBS alignment and maximum references as orientation rather than instructions to force every source to one number. A microphone, music bed, and alert can need different levels. The practical goal is clean sound with enough room that the loudest expected material does not exceed the available range.

Use OBS filters for the job they can do

Compressor: manage uneven loudness

A compressor reduces a source when it crosses a threshold, helping manage occasional louder speech relative to softer passages. OBS says a compressor typically belongs near the beginning of a filter chain. Its documented defaults—threshold -18.00 dB, ratio 10:1, attack 6 ms, and release 60 ms—are filter defaults, not a recommended relaxation-stream preset. Adjust while listening and recording; heavy compression can make a soft stream sound flattened or pump audibly. OBS Compressor Filter

If a microphone should take precedence over music or ambience, OBS supports sidechain ducking on the music source. The effect lowers the music when the microphone is active. Keep the change subtle enough that the ambience does not noticeably swell and dip; any example values in OBS’s guide are starting points, not universal settings for a relaxation mix. Limiter: catch peaks at the end

Use a limiter as the final filter in the chain. OBS describes it as a compressor with a fast attack and high ratio that prevents output from exceeding its threshold. The documented defaults are a -6 dB threshold and 60 ms release; they are defaults, not settings every stream should adopt unchanged. OBS’s guide states: “When using a Limiter it should be the last filter in your chain.” Adjust it while listening to a recording, and avoid using it to conceal an input stage that is already clipping. OBS Limiter Filter

Compression and limiting are not interchangeable: use compression to manage a wider range of uneven loudness, and the final limiter to catch peaks. Noise gates and noise suppression address unwanted background sound, not clipping; adding them will not fix an overloaded input. OBS Audio Filters

Make a test recording before going live

  1. Open the scene and audio sources you will actually use, with the same routing, filters, and levels planned for the stream.
  2. Record a representative passage that includes the loudest likely speech, normal changes in music or ambience, and any alert or transition sound you expect to use.
  3. During the test, watch OBS’s meter and peak hold for peaks. If distortion appears, compare the direct source monitor, OBS monitoring, and recording to find where it first enters the chain.
  4. Listen to the recording through headphones or speakers at a sensible level. Check for crackling, harsh peaks, audible pumping, abrupt ducking, or ambience that has been flattened.
  5. Correct the earliest stage that is too hot, then record and listen again. Do not rely on a successful quiet baseline test alone.

OBS recommends testing settings before relying on them in a first stream or recording and listening back to a normal session. OBS Audio Mixer Guide OBS First Steps

Troubleshoot common clipping problems

What you hear or see Likely cause What to do
Distortion is audible in direct microphone or interface monitoring. An input, preamp, or other upstream stage is overloaded. Reduce gain at the stage where the distortion begins, then check the following stages again.
The source sounds clean directly, but OBS monitoring or the recording distorts. A later stage, such as software level, OBS source level, processing, or the combined mix, is too hot. Check OS and app levels, then OBS levels and filters. Test the full scene and routing rather than only one source.
The meter looks safe during ambience but peaks during speech or alerts. The test did not include the loudest material, or there is insufficient headroom. Test the loudest likely phrase and every alert or transition; reduce the level at the responsible source and retest.
The limiter engages but the sound still crackles. Clipping may already have occurred before the limiter. Listen earlier in the chain and correct the input gain. Keep the limiter last as a ceiling, not as a repair tool.
The mix pumps or ambience sounds unnaturally flat. Compression, limiting, or sidechain ducking is acting too strongly. Reduce the amount of processing and listen to a new recording. Keep dynamics gentle for a relaxation stream.
A system volume slider does not change the level as expected. That slider may not control the relevant signal stage in this setup. Test its effect locally, then inspect the device, application, and OBS controls individually.

When a hardware control may help

If your current device offers no useful hardware input adjustment, a USB audio interface with input gain control may give you a practical way to set a clean level before OBS. A physical mixer can help when several inputs need separate channel and master controls. Neither is required for every setup; first identify where the distortion begins and try the available controls.
