Balance narration and cartoon audio by listening to representative parts of the full loop, adjusting source levels before OBS, and checking the recorded stream for loudness jumps and clipping. Meter readings help spot peaks, but similar-looking bars do not guarantee that dialogue sounds equally loud to viewers.
Start with the sound viewers will hear
Choose excerpts that include quiet and loud narration, cartoon dialogue, music, effects, and transitions between clips. Listen to them through the complete playback and streaming chain—not just to the source files—and adjust until the narration remains understandable without flattening the cartoon’s intended dynamics.
OBS describes its meter colors as rough cues: speech can reach the upper yellow range, while gameplay or other content should sit lower; background music and effects generally belong in green. These are not fixed fader positions or a guaranteed narration-to-cartoon balance. OBS cautions that sounds with similar meter readings can still seem louder to viewers. OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Set levels in the right order
- Check the source. Adjust the audio level in the media player, editing application, or device first, where that control is available.
- Check the operating-system mixer. If the audio is coming from an application or device routed through the computer, confirm that its system-level volume is not unexpectedly low or high.
- Adjust OBS last. Use the OBS mixer fader for final balancing after source and system levels are set. Listen through OBS audio monitoring as well as to the source audio.
- Check routing for duplicate audio. For a media-source loop, verify that the same sound is not reaching the stream through two routes. Duplicate paths can make a source unexpectedly louder.
OBS’s green, yellow, and red meter areas are useful warnings, not substitutes for listening. Its peak meter and short-window loudness-style indicator show different aspects of the signal; neither alone tells you whether narration is intelligible against the cartoon. OBS Audio Mixer Guide

Control sudden peaks without flattening the mix
If a narration track has occasional loud words or cartoon effects jump sharply, modest compression on that source may reduce the peaks before you make the final level adjustment. Listen for pumping or other audible changes, and preserve intentional changes in the cartoon’s dynamics.
There is no evidence-backed universal OBS compressor threshold, ratio, attack, or release setting for this combination of material. Real-time automatic correction also cannot know what sound comes next and may override an intentional change in dynamics. If you apply gain through a real-time loudness controller, peak limiting is used to control the resulting peaks; it does not make every scene equally loud. Keep the signal below clipping
Digital full scale is 0 dBFS. A signal that exceeds it can clip and distort, so use OBS’s peak hold to find unexpectedly loud passages and reduce the relevant source or mix level if needed. A peak that stays below the limit is not proof of consistent perceived loudness: a quiet passage and a dense, loud one can have similar peaks but sound very different. OBS Audio Mixer Guide OBS meter technical explanation
OBS’s technical explanation identifies −20 dBFS as its alignment level and −9 dBFS as the permitted maximum level in its meter conventions. Those figures explain OBS meter calibration and margins; they are not required user settings or YouTube loudness targets. OBS meter technical explanation

Use LUFS to compare files, not as a YouTube Live rule
Integrated loudness in LUFS is useful for comparing a whole file or section, whereas peak level describes the highest signal. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect lets you select a LUFS target. Its default is −23 LUFS, which Audacity characterizes as the EBU R 128 broadcast target and a reasonable spoken-word default; Audacity also notes that streaming services’ published targets are usually a few LU higher. This does not establish −23 LUFS as YouTube’s live-stream target. The YouTube live encoder guidance cited here does not specify a LUFS target. Audacity Loudness Normalization EBU R 128, version 5.0 (21 November 2023) YouTube live encoder settings
When normalizing ordinary stereo material in Audacity, keep the left and right channels linked. Normalizing them independently can alter the stereo balance; separate-channel normalization is appropriate only when the channels are genuinely separate recordings. Audacity Loudness Normalization

Test the whole loop before going live
- Record a representative session that includes quiet and loud narration, cartoon dialogue, music, effects, and clip transitions.
- Listen to the recording on headphones and, if available, another representative playback device such as speakers. Check whether narration remains clear and whether effects or transitions jump out unexpectedly.
- Use peak hold to locate sudden peaks, then replay those sections and adjust the responsible source or routing. If using compression, listen for pumping and loss of intentional dynamics.
- Repeat the check after changes. Include different parts of the loop rather than judging only the opening, which may not expose a later mismatch.
- Before the live event, test with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then monitor YouTube stream health while live.
YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and video movement before starting, and OBS recommends recording a normal session and listening back. YouTube live encoder settings OBS Audio Mixer Guide
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube loop built from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video plays at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Your audio still needs to be balanced before streaming; cloud playback does not replace the listening and testing steps above. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
