To become a YouTube Partner, qualify for the YPP tier you want, complete the application in YouTube Studio, and pass YouTube’s channel-wide policy review. As of October 3, 2026, full ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing generally requires 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the past 90 days. A lower, expanded YPP tier can unlock certain fan-funding and Shopping features, but does not by itself provide ad revenue sharing.
How do I become a YouTube Partner?
Use this sequence to work toward eligibility and apply. Reaching a threshold is only one part of the process; YouTube reviews the channel and requires additional account and policy conditions.
- Choose a sustainable format and audience promise. Decide what your channel will reliably offer and whether you can consistently make original long-form videos, Shorts, or both. A clear promise helps viewers understand why to return; no format, upload frequency, or topic guarantees growth or acceptance.
- Build qualified activity. Work toward the threshold for your intended YPP tier using eligible public long-form watch hours or eligible Shorts Feed views. Check the Earn area in YouTube Studio rather than relying on lifetime views or total watch time.
- Review your channel and account. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies and assess the channel as a whole. Confirm that you live in a YPP-available country or region, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, have 2-Step Verification enabled, have access to advanced features, and can link or set up one active AdSense for YouTube account.
- Apply in YouTube Studio. Open the Earn area, check which route is available to your channel, and complete the signup steps shown there. Regional availability and eligibility status are reflected in Studio.
- After approval, activate the features you intend to use. Review and accept the applicable feature modules and terms. YPP membership alone does not activate every way to earn.

Which YPP tier do you need?
YouTube has an earlier-access expanded tier and a higher tier for ad and YouTube Premium revenue sharing. The 500-subscriber tier is not the ad-sharing tier.

These are YouTube program thresholds checked on October 3, 2026, not estimates of how quickly a channel can grow. The expanded program is available only in eligible locations. YouTube also applies separate requirements to individual features; an eligible tier does not guarantee access to every feature everywhere. How the watch-hour and Shorts routes differ
Choose the route that fits the kind of original content you can make consistently while complying with YouTube’s policies. The routes use different activity measures and time windows; YouTube does not say one is universally easier.

What counts toward YPP eligibility—and what does not?
For the public watch-hour route
- Eligible activity is watch time from public long-form videos within the applicable 12-month window.
- Watch time from private, unlisted, or deleted videos, ad campaigns, Shorts, and certain livestreams does not count toward the public watch-hour threshold.
- Watch time from the Shorts Feed is excluded from the 4,000-hour route.
For the Shorts-view route
- The threshold is based on qualified views of public Shorts in the Shorts Feed during the previous 90 days.
- Views from private, unlisted, or deleted Shorts, and ad-campaign views, are excluded.
YouTube says watch time and views generated through paid ad campaigns do not count toward eligibility thresholds. Its feature overview identifies follow-on organic views after promoted content as eligible. Promotion can help expose a video to potential viewers, but paying for an ad does not directly buy YPP progress. Check YouTube Studio for the activity YouTube counts.

The features available depend on the tier, location, channel, and separate feature requirements. The expanded tier may provide access to channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Super Thanks, eligible live-stream gifts, and Shopping. Full revenue eligibility can support Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue. Review YouTube’s feature overview for current requirements and terms.
For Shorts ad revenue sharing, creators must accept the Shorts Monetization Module. Eligible Shorts views accrue for revenue sharing only from the date the module is accepted. YouTube’s Shorts policy identifies non-original Shorts and artificial or fake views as examples of activity ineligible for payment; see the Shorts monetization policies.

How to grow toward eligibility without mistaking activity for acceptance
Make the channel’s promise easy to recognize
Choose a defined audience and a repeatable reason for them to watch. For a documentary channel, that might mean a consistent subject area, a recurring format, or a clearly explained point of view. This is an editorial strategy, not a YouTube eligibility rule.
Make original work viewers can follow
Plan videos to answer a specific question or tell a coherent story. Use accurate titles and thumbnails that match the content, and structure longer videos so viewers can understand where the video is going. These are practical ways to serve viewers, not guaranteed growth tactics.
Choose a cadence you can sustain
A realistic schedule can help you keep publishing without sacrificing research, editing, or originality. YouTube’s eligibility pages do not promise that a particular number of uploads, video length, niche, or posting schedule will produce growth or approval.

Track the right measure
Use the Earn area to monitor progress against the route you are pursuing. Total views, lifetime watch time, and subscriber count alone do not tell you whether you have met the qualifying activity requirements.

YouTube has announced that, starting February 1, 2027, the full ad and YouTube Premium entry thresholds for new creators will rise to 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. The announcement says the lower thresholds for fan funding and YouTube Shopping will remain unchanged. These are scheduled future thresholds, not the rules in force on October 3, 2026. Check YouTube’s YPP changes page and Studio for updates, particularly if applying on or after the effective date.
