To keep an FFmpeg job running after you disconnect from a DigitalOcean Droplet, run it inside a detached tmux session or manage it with a systemd service. For a one-off job you may want to reconnect to, tmux is usually the simplest choice. Add -nostdin so FFmpeg does not check for interactive input. An SSH disconnect alone is not a guarantee that a foreground process will survive.
Choose the method that fits the job

These are Linux process-management approaches for a Droplet, not a DigitalOcean-specific persistence guarantee. DigitalOcean’s SSH connection and troubleshooting documentation explains access to a Droplet; it does not promise that an arbitrary foreground process will persist when SSH disconnects.
Run a one-off job in tmux
A detached tmux session keeps the terminal session available on the Droplet so you can reattach after reconnecting over SSH. Install tmux with the package manager for your Droplet’s Linux distribution if it is not already installed.

Start a named session:
tmux new -s ffmpeg. -
Run your actual FFmpeg command inside it, for example:

INPUTandOUTPUT.mp4are placeholders. Replace them with your real paths and use codecs and options appropriate to the source and destination;libx264is illustrative, not a universal recommendation. -
Detach without closing the session by pressing
Ctrl-b, thend. You can then disconnect SSH. -
After reconnecting, list sessions with
tmux lsand reattach withtmux attach -t ffmpeg.
If FFmpeg has exited, reattaching may show its final terminal output. Terminal scrollback may not be enough for diagnosis, so save a separate log when you need a durable record.

Manage a job with systemd
Use a systemd unit when you want the server to manage the process lifecycle, expose status, and collect service logs. The following is a minimal example to adapt; use an absolute FFmpeg path, explicit arguments, real file paths, and an appropriate working directory.

ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin -i /path/to/input -c:v libx264 /path/to/output.mp4

Create the unit file with appropriate administrator permissions, for example as
/etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-job.service. Confirm the FFmpeg executable path on your Droplet;/usr/bin/ffmpegis an example. -
Reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. -
Start the job:

Check its state with
systemctl status ffmpeg-job.serviceand inspect its logs withjournalctl -u ffmpeg-job.service. -
Enable it at boot only if that is the intended behavior:
sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-job.service. A one-off encode may already be complete when the Droplet boots again, so boot enablement is not automatically appropriate.
Set Restart= for the workload you actually have. A successful one-time transcode normally should not be restarted after it exits successfully. The systemd service and journal manuals describe the available restart and log behavior; options can vary with the systemd version installed on the Droplet.
Use nohup for a basic detached command
If you do not need to return to a live terminal and do not need a service manager, this shell pattern redirects output to a log and stdin from /dev/null:

nohup ffmpeg -nostdin -i INPUT OUTPUT >ffmpeg.log 2>&1 < /dev/null &
printf '%sn' "$!"Save the PID printed at launch and check whether the process is still present after reconnecting. A PID by itself is not a health check: the job may have exited. This approach has no built-in restart policy or attachable terminal. Shell behavior may vary, so validate the command on the Droplet’s shell and installed packages.
Why -nostdin matters
FFmpeg’s FAQ explains that it normally checks console input and documents -nostdin to prevent those input checks when running in the background. It also documents redirecting stdin from /dev/null on Linux and macOS. Without that handling, a background process may suspend while checking for terminal input. Put -nostdin in the FFmpeg invocation when it should not accept console input.
FFmpeg’s command-line documentation is regenerated nightly, so if behavior differs, check the documentation for the FFmpeg version installed on your Droplet.

You cannot find the tmux session: run
tmux lsafter reconnecting. Make sure you detached withCtrl-b, thend, rather than exiting the shell or closing the session. -
A systemd job is not running: inspect
systemctl status ffmpeg-job.serviceandjournalctl -u ffmpeg-job.service. Check the unit’s executable and arguments, working directory, and access to the input and output paths. -
A nohup job has no useful output: check the redirected log file and verify whether the process is still running. The saved PID can help identify the launched process, but does not establish that the job completed successfully.

The process started but FFmpeg failed: inspect its output and logs. Incorrect paths or permissions, unavailable inputs, full output storage, expired credentials, or a remote source disconnect can stop a job even if the process survives the SSH session.

The job stopped after a Droplet reboot or another server failure: session persistence only addresses the SSH-disconnect problem. It does not guarantee survival through a reboot, host failure, out-of-memory termination, or FFmpeg failure. A service manager can apply a configured restart policy, but cannot guarantee successful completion of a media job.
