AWS lists both as India Regions, but the fastest route from EC2 to YouTube depends on the actual network path, including your instance, source network and YouTube’s ingest route. Test both Regions with the same setup and choose based on stream health and stability—not geography or a generic ping alone.
What “low latency” means for an EC2 YouTube stream
Two different delays are often called latency, but they describe different parts of a live stream:
- EC2-to-YouTube ingest latency and reliability: the network path carrying your encoded video from the EC2 instance to YouTube. This is the path you are comparing when choosing Mumbai or Hyderabad.
- YouTube stream latency: the delay between capture and playback for viewers. YouTube’s normal, low-latency and ultra-low-latency modes affect this viewer experience; they do not show which AWS Region has the better route to YouTube ingest.
YouTube says most viewers experience under 10 seconds in low-latency mode and under five seconds in ultra-low-latency mode. These are typical platform figures, not guarantees for every viewer or measurements of EC2 network round-trip time. Lower playback latency leaves less read-ahead buffering, which can make playback more susceptible to buffering. YouTube’s low- and ultra-low-latency modes exclude 4K.
Mumbai vs Hyderabad for EC2 streaming
| Factor | Mumbai (ap-south-1) |
Hyderabad (ap-south-2) |
What it means for your choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| AWS-listed location | India | India | Both are candidates for an India-based EC2 source. |
| Region opt-in | Not required in AWS’s cited current Region table | Required in AWS’s cited current Region table | Confirm Hyderabad is enabled for your account before testing. |
| EC2 instance availability | Specific instance-type and Availability Zone support must be checked | Specific instance-type and Availability Zone support must be checked | Use an equivalent instance type and configuration in each test; availability can differ by Region and AZ. |
| Measured YouTube ingest route | No comparable India-to-YouTube result is established | No comparable India-to-YouTube result is established | Test from the network and stream setup you will actually use. |
| Viewer playback latency | Set through YouTube’s playback-latency mode, not AWS Region alone | Set through YouTube’s playback-latency mode, not AWS Region alone | Choose the playback mode separately from your EC2 Region. |
AWS describes Availability Zones within a Region as connected by low-latency, high-bandwidth, redundant networking. That describes communication inside the Region; it does not establish a low-latency route from an EC2 instance to YouTube or to viewers in India.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to test both Regions fairly
- Check access and availability. Enable Hyderabad if it is a candidate, then verify that the same EC2 instance family, storage, network configuration and encoder setup are available in both Regions. Check the chosen Availability Zone as well as the Region.
- Keep the test conditions matched. Use the intended source city and ISP, the same video, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and YouTube stream setup. Run comparable tests from Mumbai and Hyderabad at similar times. A result from a different source network may not represent your deployment.
- Use representative content. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion. A static screen or silent test can miss problems that appear with the real programme’s audio or movement.
- Monitor the live test. Record YouTube stream-health warnings, dropped frames, reconnects and overall stability alongside any route or round-trip measurements you collect. A generic ping is not a direct measurement of video-ingest quality.
- Repeat before deciding. Network conditions and routes can change. Compare equivalent tests rather than treating a single short run or one ping result as a universal Region ranking.
- Leave outbound capacity headroom. YouTube recommends planning for 20% headroom and accounting for both primary and backup stream bitrates when applicable. If your stream uses a backup feed, include its outbound traffic in the capacity plan.
Choose the Region that delivers the more stable test under your intended conditions. If results are effectively equivalent, instance availability, account readiness and the rest of your deployment requirements can decide between them; the available evidence does not establish a universal latency winner.
Encoder and YouTube settings that affect the test
Use the same encoding settings in each Region
A regional comparison is only useful if the stream itself is comparable. Keep resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings constant between runs. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Plan network capacity with the recommended 20% headroom rather than sizing outbound bandwidth to exactly the nominal stream bitrate.

Select playback latency for the audience
Choose YouTube’s normal, low or ultra-low playback-latency mode according to how quickly viewers need to see the event and how much buffering risk is acceptable. Low and ultra-low mode figures describe viewer playback, not the route from EC2 to YouTube. Both modes exclude 4K, so they are not options for a 4K viewer stream.
Use the intended stream key safely
Configure the YouTube stream key in the encoder running on the EC2 instance, and keep the key private. Use the same YouTube stream setup for both Region tests so that differences are attributable as much as possible to the source path and its conditions.

Copyright and channel considerations
A technically stable stream is not automatically eligible to remain live or suitable for monetization. Use video and audio that you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content rules for your channel and material. Do not assume that continuously looping a recording makes it exempt from those rules.
For a pre-stream review, use the copyright safety checklist. It is a practical check, not a substitute for rights clearance or YouTube’s policy decisions.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube channel rather than managing EC2 and an encoder yourself, StreamNeo runs uploaded recordings or playlists from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded material to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
- There is no computer at home that has to stay on.
- One flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.
- Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Costs and practical planning
EC2 is a do-it-yourself cloud setup: compare the complete cost of the instance and any other AWS resources you use against the value of managing the encoder and stream yourself. The exact bill depends on your selected resources and usage, so do not treat the Region choice alone as a cost comparison. Estimate whether keeping a PC online or running in the cloud suits your setup with the cloud vs PC cost calculator. If you are preparing source files for cloud streaming, the upload-time calculator can help estimate upload time.

Troubleshooting a regional test
- Hyderabad cannot launch the chosen instance: check that the Region is enabled and verify instance-family availability in the intended Availability Zone. Do not substitute a materially different instance configuration and treat the result as an equivalent regional comparison.
- YouTube reports stream-health warnings or dropped frames: check outbound capacity, encoder settings and the network path. Re-test with matched settings and sufficient headroom, then compare the stream-health results rather than relying only on ping.
- The stream reconnects: note the reconnects and their timing, check stream health and network stability, and run another representative test. A brief successful connection does not establish sustained reliability.
- Viewers report delay despite a healthy ingest: review the YouTube playback-latency mode separately. Viewer delay is not proof that the EC2 Region has a poor ingest route.
- Low-latency playback buffers or 4K is required: weigh the buffering trade-off and note that YouTube’s low- and ultra-low-latency modes exclude 4K. The playback-mode choice is distinct from the Mumbai-versus-Hyderabad test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does moving EC2 closer to my Indian viewers necessarily reduce YouTube live delay?
No. EC2’s route to YouTube ingest and YouTube’s path and playback behavior for each viewer are separate parts of the stream.
Can I rely on one ping test to pick a Region?
No. A ping is only a network measurement; compare representative live-stream health and stability under matched conditions.
