Prepare timed captions for each episode, then configure captions separately for the continuous YouTube Live broadcast. A caption track attached to an uploaded video is not, by itself, a live caption feed. YouTube does not promise that captions will carry across episode changes, so test the transitions in your actual playout setup. If the live stream needs closed captions, do not use ultra-low latency.
Plan for two separate caption layers
Each uploaded episode can have its own subtitle or caption track in YouTube Studio. The live broadcast has a separate caption path: captions can be embedded in the outgoing video as EIA-608/CEA-708, or delivered through a supported HTTP POST caption feed. Do not assume an episode’s YouTube caption track becomes captions for the continuous live broadcast. YouTube documents the two mechanisms separately; it does not guarantee automatic caption continuity when a playout system switches episodes. YouTube’s live caption requirements and subtitle and caption instructions describe the respective workflows.
Prepare captions for every episode
- Check each video in YouTube Studio. Confirm its language and whether it has an owner-provided caption track or an automatically generated one. Review generated captions for errors rather than assuming they are accurate.
- Use a timed caption file where available. YouTube accepts caption files with timing. You can also enter captions manually or submit a transcript in the same language as the spoken audio for auto-sync.
- Allow time for auto-sync and check its suitability. YouTube says timing may take a few minutes. It does not recommend transcript auto-sync for videos longer than one hour or videos with poor audio quality.
- Check the resulting track on the episode. Verify the language, text, and timing against the actual audio, especially at the beginning and end of the episode.
Automatic captions can be delayed or unavailable. YouTube lists possible causes including unsupported languages, poor sound, long duration, long silence at the start, overlapping speakers, and simultaneous languages. YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance explains these limitations.
Choose how the live broadcast will receive captions
Make this decision before setting up the encoder or caption provider. The right option depends on whether your equipment can embed captions and whether your caption workflow can send a supported HTTP feed.

| Live caption path | What the workflow requires | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 | The encoder must include the captions in the outgoing video signal, and the YouTube broadcast must be configured for embedded captions. | Confirm that captions survive the episode switch and remain synchronized in the live player. |
| HTTP POST caption feed | A supported captioning system sends captions to the caption ingestion URL configured for the broadcast. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed. | Confirm the provider is sending to the correct broadcast’s ingestion URL and that captions remain in sync through switches and restarts. |
YouTube’s API describes broadcast caption modes as disabled, HTTP POST, and embedded. Its live-caption help page says the 608/708 standard supports up to four language tracks, while YouTube currently supports one caption track in the workflow described on that page. Because platform support can change, check YouTube’s current requirements when configuring a new stream. The help page’s HTTP caption workflow describes adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay; treat that as part of that specific setup, not a universal requirement for embedded captions or every caption system. YouTube Live Streaming API broadcast documentation lists the caption modes.
Set a compatible latency mode
If closed captions are required, avoid ultra-low latency. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation states that ultra-low latency “does not support closed captions, or resolutions higher than 1080p.” Choose a latency mode that supports the caption path you selected, then confirm the broadcast settings and encoder or caption-provider configuration agree.

Test episode boundaries before relying on the schedule
Caption standards and broadcast settings do not establish that a particular 24/7 playout system will preserve synchronization across episode changes. Treat transition checks as an operational test of your own setup, not as a YouTube guarantee.
- Run a test stream with at least two episodes and the same encoder, caption provider, and playout method you intend to use.
- Watch the start and end of each episode, plus the switch itself. Check that caption text appears, matches the spoken audio, and is not carried over from the previous episode.
- Check the caption language and timing after the transition. Look for missing opening lines, delayed text, or timing drift.
- Simulate or observe an encoder or stream recovery, then check captions again. A successful video restart does not by itself prove that the caption feed resumed correctly.
- Review the replay separately after the broadcast. Do not use the live player alone to judge whether captions will be present on the archived video.
What to expect from automatic live captions and replays
YouTube’s automatic live captions are a limited fallback, not a continuity plan for prerecorded episodes. Its documented live-caption availability is English-only and depends on specified operating conditions and rollout. YouTube also says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the stream ends; captions for the video-on-demand replay are generated separately and may differ. Check the replay’s caption track on its own. YouTube’s automatic-caption guidance covers live captions and replay behavior.

Troubleshoot missing, interrupted, or different captions
Captions are missing on an individual episode
- Check whether the episode has an owner-provided track or an automatically generated one in YouTube Studio.
- If using generated captions, allow for possible delays and check for the issues YouTube identifies, such as poor audio, long opening silence, overlapping speakers, or unsupported language.
- Correct inaccurate generated text or add a timed caption track; do not treat automatic generation as guaranteed.
Episode captions exist, but nothing appears in the live output
- Check the broadcast’s caption mode and confirm it matches the chosen method: embedded captions or HTTP POST.
- For embedded captions, confirm the encoder is actually putting EIA-608/CEA-708 into the outgoing signal.
- For HTTP captions, check the ingestion URL, caption provider connection, and the one-feed-per-stream-entry-point constraint.
- Confirm the stream is not using ultra-low latency if closed captions are required.
Captions disappear or drift at an episode switch
- Repeat a two-episode transition test and inspect the first and last seconds of both episodes.
- Check whether the caption output continues through the switch and whether a restart or recovery interrupts the embedded output or HTTP feed.
- There is no universal diagnostic sequence for every encoder and provider; isolate the handoff using the settings and status information for your actual equipment.
Captions work live but are absent or different on the replay
Check the replay’s caption track separately. Live automatic captions are not retained, and YouTube generates VOD captions through a separate process, so replay captions may differ from the live output.
