Match clips closely enough for comfortable listening, but preserve intentional changes in distance and intensity—a distant rain bed can sit below close thunder. There is no single LUFS target that suits every ambience playlist.
Choose where to even out the audio
If you are exporting one continuous ambience track, editing a local playlist, or need consistent playback across different apps and devices, level the clips in your editing workflow. A streaming service may normalize playback, but its behavior depends on the platform, settings, and device; it is not a dependable substitute for preparing a consistent file.
Spotify, for example, says it normalizes individual tracks when listeners shuffle an album or play tracks from multiple albums, such as in a playlist. It normalizes an album as a whole rather than changing the relative levels between its tracks. Spotify also says its web player and some third-party devices do not use loudness normalization. These are Spotify-specific behaviors, not a general guarantee for every player. Spotify’s loudness-normalization guidance explains its settings and exceptions.
Match clips without flattening the ambience
1. Listen for the problem you want to solve
Play the clips in their intended order and note transitions that feel startlingly louder or quieter. Decide whether a difference is unwanted or part of the soundscape: a nearby waterfall may appropriately feel stronger than distant wind. The aim is a coherent listening experience, not identical readings at any cost.

2. Measure perceived loudness
Use a loudness meter or normalization effect that measures LUFS (loudness units relative to full scale), rather than judging only by waveform height or sample peaks. LUFS measurement helps identify clips that differ in perceived level even when their waveforms look similar. Audacity’s manual describes loudness normalization as one way to create an equally loud playlist from different sources.
3. Choose per-clip matching or shared gain
For independent ambience clips that should sit at a similar perceived level, normalize each clip separately or adjust its clip gain. For a sequence whose quiet-to-loud shape is intentional, use a shared gain adjustment across the assembled program, or make smaller individual corrections that preserve the planned contrast. The Audio Engineering Society distinguishes track normalization, which adjusts tracks separately, from album normalization, which applies one gain value and preserves their relative loudness.

Neither approach decides what sounds natural for your particular recordings. Treat the meter as a guide, then make small manual adjustments by ear where the measured match weakens the intended sense of distance, softness, or movement.
4. Keep stereo channels paired
If a stereo recording has the intended left/right balance, normalize its two channels together. Audacity’s default paired-channel behavior preserves that balance. Normalizing channels independently is more appropriate when correcting a recording that is already unbalanced, not as a routine step for every stereo ambience clip.

5. Check peaks separately and listen again
Integrated loudness and peak level answer different questions: LUFS helps compare perceived loudness, while peak checks help identify clipping or encoding risk. After matching, listen to the full playlist at a comfortable, consistent playback volume, paying particular attention to clip boundaries. If a transition still jumps, adjust the clip gain slightly and listen again; do not raise every quiet detail merely to make the numbers match.
There is no universal LUFS target
Pick a target for a named destination or production standard, not because one number is right for all ambience. Audacity’s Loudness Normalization effect defaults to -23 LUFS; its manual also notes -24 LUFS as a level normally used for US television and -23 LUFS as an EBU recommendation in contexts including television/radio, podcasts, and websites. These examples illustrate that targets vary by use, rather than prescribing a target for every playlist.

The AES technical recommendation TD1008 v3.13 advises that, except for wide-dynamic-range content, distributors normalize an album’s loudest track to -14 LUFS, typically resulting in about -16 LUFS integrated album loudness; when album normalization is unavailable, it recommends normalizing all tracks to -16 LUFS. These are distribution recommendations from that document, not a universal mastering rule for an ambience project. The AES loudness-normalization resource explains the distinction between track and album approaches.
If the destination is Spotify
Spotify says its playback targets for Premium listeners are -14 LUFS under Normal, -11 LUFS under Loud, and -19 LUFS under Quiet. Its mastering guidance targets -14 LUFS integrated and recommends keeping true peak below -1 dBTP for lossy formats; for masters louder than -14 LUFS, it recommends below -2 dBTP to reduce the risk of additional encoding distortion. Those are Spotify-specific recommendations. Do not apply them automatically to a file intended for another platform or for local playback. Read Spotify’s current guidance for its normalization and mastering details.

Tools for a practical workflow
Audacity
In Audacity, select the audio and open Effect > Volume and Compression > Loudness Normalization. Choose the perceived-loudness option and set a target appropriate to your project; the effect’s documented default is -23 LUFS, but that is not a universal ambience target. Keep stereo channels paired when their balance is already right. Apply the effect, inspect the result, and listen through the transitions before exporting. Audacity recommends applying the effect before export when preparing an equally loud playlist.
Adobe Premiere Pro
If you already edit the clips in Premiere Pro, Adobe documents an Auto-Match workflow: select or tag the audio clips, open the Essential Sound panel, expand Loudness, then choose Auto-Match. Premiere displays the clip’s measured LUFS level beneath the control. Adobe’s page was last updated 21 January 2026. Auto-Match is a convenient starting point, not a reason to skip listening for intentional ambience dynamics. Adobe’s Auto-Match instructions give the documented steps.
Troubleshooting level jumps
- A clip still sounds louder despite a similar waveform height: compare LUFS rather than visual waveform size; waveform peaks do not directly represent perceived loudness.
- The playlist sounds flat after normalization: independently matching every clip may have removed useful contrasts. Restore some clip gain difference or use a shared gain adjustment for a deliberately shaped sequence.
- The stereo image shifts after processing: verify that the left and right channels were normalized together, unless you are deliberately correcting an existing imbalance.
- A normalized file clips or sounds distorted: check peak level separately from integrated LUFS and reduce gain if necessary. Loudness matching does not itself guarantee safe peaks.
- The edit sounds even in one app but uneven elsewhere: playback normalization can vary or be absent on particular platforms and devices. Check the exported file independently instead of relying on one player’s correction.
- A target number makes the ambience feel wrong: return to the intended mood and listening context. The numerical targets cited above belong to specific tools, standards, or platforms; none is established as the right target for all ambience playlists.
