Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To prevent audio/video sync problems in an FFmpeg loop, first identify whether the sound is consistently early or late, drifts progressively during playback, jumps at the loop boundary, or breaks up. Those symptoms point to different causes. Pace prerecorded input for real-time delivery, inspect the file’s timestamps and stream properties, and apply an offset only if you have measured a constant error. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input; it does not guarantee synchronization.
Diagnose the sync problem before changing the command
A command that connects to YouTube successfully can still send out-of-sync audio. Check the actual outgoing preview with a segment that contains both movement and sound, then classify what you observe:
- Constant lead or lag: the audio is early or late by roughly the same amount throughout a play. This may indicate a fixed timestamp offset, but measure it before changing timestamps.
- Growing drift: the difference becomes larger as the video plays. A fixed offset will not correct an error that accumulates.
- A jump at each loop: sync is acceptable before the end but changes when playback returns to the beginning. Inspect the source timeline and the transition between its end and start.
- Choppy or dropped media: distinguish playback interruptions from a stable timing offset. Check the source, encoding load, output logs, and YouTube stream-health messages before treating it as a timestamp problem.
These patterns help narrow the investigation; none proves a cause by itself. Without your file, command, FFmpeg build, and logs, there is no reliable universal offset or filter chain to prescribe.
Collect the information needed to troubleshoot
- Record the installed build with
ffmpeg -version. FFmpeg options and behavior can vary by version; compare advice with the installed build usingffmpeg -h fullor the help for the relevant option. - Inspect the input’s streams and timestamps with
ffprobe. Note the audio and video start times, durations, frame rates, sample rate, and any timestamp irregularities. - Save the complete FFmpeg command and relevant log output, but remove the YouTube stream key first. YouTube says the key functions like a stream password and address; do not share it publicly.
- Test a representative section that includes motion and audio, and note whether the mismatch is constant, grows, occurs at the loop boundary, or coincides with choppiness.
Compare the source audio and video timelines: they should represent the same intended content and align as expected. If the file has a discontinuity or differing stream start times, changing output frame rate may not address the underlying problem.

Loop and pace a prerecorded file deliberately
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option for repeating an input; a value of -1 requests infinite looping. For file-to-live output, -re can read the file at its native rate to pace delivery. These options serve different purposes: looping repeats media, while pacing controls read speed. Neither is a general sync correction.
Input options belong before the input they affect. A schematic command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 [input options] -i "input-file" [mapping and encoding options] -f flv "rtmps://YouTube-ingest-address/STREAM-KEY"

This is a structure, not a universal copy-and-paste command. Choose codecs, mapping, and output settings for your file and YouTube’s current ingest requirements. Obtain the ingest address and key in YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and avoid posting unredacted commands or logs.
The FFmpeg manual describes -re as reading input at its native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. Its warning about read-rate limits is especially relevant to actual capture or live inputs: do not slow those down with an inappropriate low read rate, which can cause packet loss. For a prerecorded file, verify the option behavior against your installed FFmpeg version.
Choose a correction based on the symptom
For a measured, constant offset
FFmpeg’s -itsoffset adds an offset to input timestamps. It is appropriate to investigate only when measurement shows a stable lead or lag. Apply it to the input whose timestamps need adjustment, with the sign and placement verified against the installed build, then test the result. Do not guess a value, and do not expect a timestamp offset to repair progressive drift or a loop-boundary discontinuity.

For drift that accumulates or changes at the loop
Recheck stream start times, durations, frame rates, sample rate, and timestamps in the source. Confirm that audio and video describe the same intended timeline and that repeating the file does not introduce a discontinuity. The appropriate remedy depends on what those checks show; there is no evidence-based universal -itsoffset or -async value for every file.
For frame-rate differences
FFmpeg’s per-stream -fps_mode controls video frame synchronization, not audio synchronization. Its documented modes behave differently:
Recommended Free Tools
passthroughpasses frames with demuxer timestamps.cfrduplicates or drops frames to reach the requested constant frame rate.vfrpasses frames with timestamps or drops duplicate frames.autoselects a mode based on muxer capabilities.
Because constant-frame-rate conversion can alter the video cadence by duplicating or dropping frames, it is not a universal audio-sync switch. FFmpeg also notes that muxer processing can further change timestamps. Select a mode only when the source and output requirements justify it, then validate the stream.

Do not use an end-of-file option that stops the stream
FFmpeg documents -shortest as ending encoding when the shortest output stream ends. In an indefinite loop intended to stay live, that may stop output instead of helping synchronization.
Match YouTube ingest settings, then test the actual stream
YouTube Help’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Its listed audio settings are 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround, with 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1 surround audio. The guide’s video bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guide for the combination you intend to send.
These settings concern ingest compatibility and quality; matching them does not correct bad source timestamps. YouTube Help recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages. A process that runs or an ingest connection that appears active does not by itself demonstrate that the sound and picture are synchronized.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Assuming looping guarantees sync:
-stream_loop -1repeats the input; inspect what happens at the boundary and through each play. - Using
-reas a sync fix: it paces file reading for real-time delivery; it does not correct timestamp offsets. - Guessing an
-itsoffsetvalue: measure which stream leads and by how much, and use an offset only for a stable error. - Treating
-fps_mode cfras an audio fix: it can duplicate or drop video frames, and does not by itself align audio timestamps. - Copying legacy advice without checking the build: verify current option names and behavior in your installed FFmpeg instead of reflexively applying legacy
-vsyncor-asyncadvice. - Expecting YouTube encoding to repair a bad timeline: compatible ingest settings and platform transcoding are not proof that incoming timestamp errors will be fixed.
- Posting an unredacted command: remove the stream key from commands, logs, screenshots, and support requests.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is an always-on YouTube stream rather than debugging a local FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video playing and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, but it is not a timestamp-repair tool: check that your source is in sync before uploading.
