To keep audio in sync on a continuous YouTube live stream, first find out whether the mismatch is already present in your local recording or encoder preview, or appears only in YouTube playback. Then check stream health and connection stability, make one small measured correction if the offset is constant, and test again. A fixed offset is not a universal cure: the right adjustment depends on which source is early and whether the error stays constant or grows over time.
What audio sync is—and what it is not
Audio/video sync is the relative timing of sound and picture: for example, whether speech matches a speaker’s mouth movements. Stream latency is different. YouTube defines latency as the delay between camera capture and playback for viewers. Lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer, which can make buffering more likely, but changing the latency setting is not the same as correcting an audio offset. YouTube Help explains live-streaming latency.
Keep that distinction in mind throughout troubleshooting. A stream can have high viewer latency and properly synchronized audio, or low latency and a sync problem.
Run a representative test before changing settings
Use a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled test if your channel workflow permits. Make it long enough to reproduce the issue, and include both spoken words and visible movement—such as a clap or another clear action—so you can judge alignment. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion resembling the actual program, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages during the event. See YouTube’s encoder and preflight guidance.

Record the starting configuration
Before changing anything, note the microphone or other audio source, camera or capture source, audio sample rate, video frame rate, encoder settings, and whether the problem also appears in a local recording. Change one thing at a time; otherwise, it will be difficult to tell which change mattered.
Compare the source with YouTube playback
- Check a local recording or encoder preview, if available. Look for the same speech-and-motion cue you used in the test.
- Watch the YouTube playback and compare it with the local result. If possible, check another viewer device as well.
- Note when the mismatch appears and whether it stays the same or grows as the stream continues.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health and messages around the time the issue occurs.
This comparison helps locate the problem, but it is a troubleshooting method rather than a sequence prescribed by YouTube. YouTube’s health documentation includes flags such as videoBitrateLow, framerateMismatch, and noAudioStream, as well as other audio/video configuration issues and video ingestion starvation. The YouTube Live Streaming API documents stream health.

Check encoder settings and stream health
Confirm which ingestion protocol you are using before applying settings: YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS recommendations are not interchangeable with its separate HLS instructions. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists the following:
| Setting | YouTube guidance for RTMP/RTMPS |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; no more than 4 seconds |
| Audio sample rate | 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio |
| Audio bitrate | 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio |
These are platform recommendations, not lip-sync tolerances or an offset to enter in your software. Use the values appropriate to your chosen protocol and setup. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings.

For HLS, YouTube’s guidance specifies segment durations of 1–4 seconds; shorter segments produce lower latency. HLS sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, so it has higher latency. Those segment settings concern delivery latency, not a guaranteed audio-sync correction. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.
Use the pattern of the mismatch to choose your next step
The mismatch is already in a local recording or preview
Investigate the source chain before blaming YouTube delivery. Check audio routing, the timing of the capture device, and the encoder configuration. If the mismatch begins before the stream reaches YouTube, adjusting YouTube latency is unlikely to address its source.

The local capture is aligned, but YouTube playback is not
Compare playback on another viewer device and review stream-health messages and signs of buffering. The difference may lie in ingest, delivery, or playback conditions; do not assume the viewer’s latency is a fixed audio offset.
The mismatch stays constant and repeats
Establish whether audio leads or lags video. Then make a small measured adjustment using the sync controls in your streaming software and repeat the test. Avoid applying a universal millisecond value: the appropriate correction depends on the source timing and direction of the error.

The mismatch grows over time
Repeat a long enough test to reproduce the pattern. Check for inconsistent timing or configuration among sources, and look for resource or dropped-frame warnings. The official guidance cited here does not establish one universal cause of gradual drift, so diagnose the particular setup instead of assuming a single culprit.
Dropped frames, disconnects, or buffering coincide with the issue
Check whether your connection can sustain the selected bitrate. OBS notes that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends testing the connection, adjusting bitrate to match stable upload capacity, and considering other parts of the network path, including network equipment and VPN or security software. Follow the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide rather than treating every dropped-frame symptom as identical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose YouTube latency for the program, not as a sync fix
Choose a latency mode according to how much viewers need to interact and how much buffering risk is acceptable. YouTube says most viewers on low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds of latency, and most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams experience less than five seconds. These are typical viewer-latency figures from YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026—not audio-sync tolerances. YouTube also warns that lower latency increases buffering risk; both low and ultra-low latency exclude 4K. Normal latency suits non-interactive streams and supports all resolutions and features. Review YouTube’s latency trade-offs.
When a capture device may be involved
A capture device can be one part of a particular source chain, but buying a new capture card is not a general fix for clock drift, routing mistakes, encoding issues, or YouTube/player buffering. Consider a capture-device change only if your tests implicate that part of the path. AVerMedia’s troubleshooting document addresses capture-chain sync in OBS or Streamlabs OBS, but it does not establish a universal hardware remedy. See AVerMedia’s capture-device sync guide.
