OBS automatic reconnect can help after a connection interruption while the computer is still running; it cannot restart a PC that has lost power. If the computer shuts down, recovery depends on power returning, the PC booting, OBS and its sources working again, and YouTube’s Live Control Room accepting the encoder feed.
What can keep a stream online during an outage?
There are two distinct problems to plan for: loss of power and loss of the stream connection. A UPS addresses the first temporarily by supplying battery power. OBS’s automatic reconnect addresses some connection interruptions while OBS and the computer remain operational. Neither guarantees an uninterrupted public broadcast in every outage.
Use a UPS for short interruptions
Connect the streaming PC and the modem, router, or other network equipment required for internet access to outlets marked for battery backup—not just surge protection. A UPS supplies backup power for a limited time. Choose its capacity based on the combined load and how long you need to bridge an outage; there is no universally correct runtime. APC’s manual describes battery-backed outlets as temporary power for a computer and critical peripherals: APC battery-backup outlet manual.
If the internet provider’s equipment or service goes down, keeping the PC powered is not enough. Likewise, a UPS cannot sustain a stream indefinitely once its battery is depleted.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect before going live
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect. Confirm the label and location in your installed OBS version, since interface details can vary. The setting can help OBS recover from a transient connection loss when the computer is still on; it does not power on a shut-down PC or guarantee that a camera or other source reconnects. Prepare the YouTube event for recovery
Review auto-start and auto-stop
YouTube Live Control Room’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop options, and reused settings can carry those selections into another stream. Review the settings for the event you intend to use, particularly auto-stop if you hope to resume that same event after an encoder interruption. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a universal reconnect grace period or guarantee that every event will resume as the same public broadcast after a power failure. Know the encoder workflow
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key. After the encoder connects, Live Control Room shows an incoming preview; starting the encoder and making the event live are separate steps. Depending on the event state and settings, you may need to select Go live after the preview returns. Follow the current prompts in Live Control Room rather than assuming an encoder reconnect automatically makes the public event live. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Configure the PC to start after power returns
A UPS restoring its output does not necessarily turn the computer back on after a full shutdown. Some PCs or motherboards provide a firmware option to power on when AC power returns; support and menu names vary. Consult the documentation for your exact computer or motherboard before changing BIOS/firmware settings. APC notes that automatic computer restart after a UPS has fully discharged depends on a suitable BIOS setting: APC Back-UPS restart guidance and Schneider Electric computer restart guidance.

Recover the stream after power returns
- Restore power and network first. Confirm the PC, modem/router, and any required network equipment have power and internet access.
- Confirm the computer booted. If it stayed off, use the normal power control. A configured power-on-after-AC-loss option may help on a later outage, but availability depends on the system.
- Open OBS and check its output. Confirm the intended scene is active, the camera and audio sources are producing output, and OBS reports a connection. If OBS remains disconnected, use its stream connection troubleshooting guidance to check connection and network conditions.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Look for the incoming preview and inspect the event status. If the encoder is sending but the event is not live, follow YouTube’s current workflow and select Go live when appropriate.
- Check sources independently. A camera or other input may not recover just because OBS reconnects. Confirm each source is working; recovery behavior depends on the source and setup.
Troubleshoot by the layer that failed

Does YouTube’s under-12-hour archive threshold mean a stream can reconnect for 12 hours?
No. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is an archive threshold, not an outage-recovery grace period.
