Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo keep an OBS stream live around the clock, the Mac must remain powered and awake, OBS must sustain the chosen video settings, and the internet connection must maintain enough upload capacity. In YouTube Studio, connect OBS to an encoder stream with its server URL and stream key; test the result and monitor stream health. You can configure OBS to start streaming when it launches, but that alone does not restart OBS after a crash or restore a stream after a power or network failure.
What a Mac-based 24/7 stream depends on
OBS encodes your scenes and sends them to YouTube using the destination and stream key configured for the encoder stream. For continuous operation, the full chain has to work: the Mac stays awake, OBS keeps encoding, the network sustains the upload, and YouTube continues receiving the feed. A failure at any point can interrupt the broadcast.
The right resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate depend on the Mac, scene complexity and measured upload capacity. There is no universally safe setting or Mac model for every 24/7 stream.
Set up YouTube and OBS
1. Create or select an encoder stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the old key in OBS. An encoder still using the old key will no longer authenticate.
YouTube documents that a custom stream key can be reused. Verify that the selected stream and its visibility settings are the ones you intend to use before going live.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Choose settings for your actual Mac and connection
Measure your upload capacity and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrates for the resolution and frame rate you plan to send. Its table gives different minimum and recommended H.264 rates for different combinations; a single bitrate is not right for every stream.
- Rate control: YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Audio: For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported.
- Encoding load: OBS notes that meeting its baseline system requirements does not guarantee successful streaming. Load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity.
Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard or a controlled test to find settings the specific Mac can sustain. Test with movement and audio representative of the intended program; a static scene may not reveal problems that appear during a more demanding segment.

Keep the Mac awake and OBS running
Prevent sleep without assuming every Mac has the same control
Connect a MacBook to its power adapter. In macOS, check the relevant Battery settings and Options for a control to prevent automatic sleep while the display is off. Apple says this setting may not be available on every configuration, and preventing sleep can increase power consumption. The screen turning off is not the same as the computer sleeping: the display can be off while the Mac continues encoding. Desktop Macs have corresponding sleep controls in their energy settings. Labels and availability vary by Mac and macOS version; see Apple’s guidance on preventing sleep.
Understand what launch-on-start can and cannot do
OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter. On macOS, its documented approach for passing launch parameters is open -a "OBS" --args; for example, to launch OBS and request streaming, use:

open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming
See the OBS launch parameters documentation. This requests that OBS start streaming when OBS launches. It does not establish that OBS will relaunch after a crash, that the Mac will log in after power returns, or that YouTube will resume a lost encoder connection. Treat those as separate recovery problems, not as benefits guaranteed by the launch argument.
Test the broadcast and monitor it
- Before relying on a long run, start a test in an appropriate visibility mode and verify the preview and watch page.
- Check that the picture, movement and audio are correct, and watch YouTube’s stream health indicators while the test is running.
- Monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend ongoing monitoring.
- If the stream stops, diagnose the encoder, key, network and Mac power state before treating it as recovered. If OBS reports an encoder start error, check the configured key; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance includes resetting a key when needed.
A single successful test confirms only that the setup worked under those test conditions. It does not prove the Mac, network or stream will recover automatically from later failures.

Plan separately for long-term recording
A continuous broadcast and a retained recording are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; its guidance does not promise an archive for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours. Do not rely on a 24/7 broadcast appearing as one continuous YouTube archive. If a recording matters, check YouTube’s current limits and plan a separate recording approach. Verify the Mac’s available storage and ability to record while streaming before relying on a local recording.
Common problems and what to check
- The stream will not start: Check that OBS has the intended server URL and current stream key. If the key was reset or may be compromised, update OBS with the replacement.
- The Mac stops broadcasting after a while: Check whether the computer slept, lost power or the network connection dropped. Confirm that the display turning off has not also put the Mac to sleep.
- The picture or audio is unstable: Compare the chosen bitrate with the measured upload capacity and YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate. Test representative motion and sound, then reduce the workload or output settings if the Mac or connection cannot sustain them.
- OBS opens but the stream does not resume after an interruption: The launch parameter only requests streaming when OBS starts. It is not a process supervisor or a documented power- and network-recovery system.
- You cannot find the sleep-prevention option: Apple notes that availability varies. Check the controls for the specific Mac and macOS version rather than assuming the same label or option exists everywhere.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a camera or a locally running OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live.
