FFmpeg does not have a documented, general-purpose reconnect switch for restoring a dropped YouTube RTMP/RTMPS publishing session. The -reconnect options in FFmpeg’s protocol documentation are in its HTTP section; they are not a supported guarantee of RTMP output recovery. To limit disruption, configure YouTube’s endpoint correctly, leave upload headroom, monitor FFmpeg and YouTube, and test a recovery plan—including a separate backup encoder for important events.
Even after the encoder reconnects, neither YouTube nor FFmpeg promises that viewers will see one uninterrupted live session. Test the exact setup and plan for a visible interruption.
What happens when the network drops
An RTMP/RTMPS stream is a publishing connection from your encoder to YouTube. If the network briefly fails, the connection may break even while FFmpeg continues running. A running process is not proof that YouTube is receiving video, and a valid FFmpeg command is not proof that the network can sustain the stream.
Recovery has two separate questions: whether the encoder process survives the outage, and whether it can re-establish a publishing session that YouTube accepts. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect options do not establish a general answer to the second question for RTMP output. Whether a particular deployment recovers can depend on its protocol, FFmpeg build, muxer state, source, and process lifecycle.

Set up the YouTube destination securely
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the event and go to Stream settings. Copy the current server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends the encrypted protocol; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from Stream settings rather than assuming the regular RTMP URL is the right endpoint. See Use RTMPS for live streaming.
- Keep the stream key private. It functions like a password for the feed. Do not publish it in a command, screenshot, log excerpt, public issue, or shared document. YouTube explains keys and stream settings at Manage your live stream settings.
- If YouTube reports an SSL error, check that the URL uses the intended RTMPS scheme and host. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also discusses port 443 where appropriate to the assigned endpoint; do not change the endpoint blindly.
Use the URL and key for the specific event and current Live Control Room setup. Never put a real key into a reusable example: use a placeholder such as YOUR_STREAM_KEY in private documentation, and do not run a command containing a key where shell history or process listings are exposed.
Choose settings that leave room for network variation
YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one number as right for every stream. See YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| Example YouTube recommendation | Recommended bitrate | Context |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; not a guarantee of quality or a universal prescription. |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube recommendation; not a guarantee of quality or a universal prescription. |
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping total stream bitrate within available upload capacity and leaving 20% headroom. For example, a stream configured at 8 Mbps needs more than 8 Mbps of reliable upload capacity; the recommended headroom is additional capacity, not bitrate to use. Include every simultaneous output in the total, including a backup stream if it is sent over the same uplink. A speed-test peak does not establish that your connection can sustain the upload throughout an event. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption could mean a broken stream and recommends monitoring stream health: Streaming tips.

Why FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect flags are not an RTMP fix
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry delays in its HTTP protocol section. Those options apply to HTTP transfers or inputs; their presence in FFmpeg does not make them a documented general reconnect control for an RTMP publishing output. An option valid for an HTTP input may not apply to the RTMP output at all. Consult the protocol documentation for the FFmpeg build in use: FFmpeg protocols documentation.
In particular, do not blindly add -reconnect 1 to an RTMP output command and assume it will restore the YouTube session. A process that remains open may still be disconnected, while restarting a process does not by itself prove that YouTube accepted a new publishing session or that viewers experienced no interruption.
Build a recovery plan around monitoring and testing
Keep the encoder and source observable
Watch FFmpeg’s logs and process exit status alongside YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. If the process exits, a service manager or watchdog can be configured to restart it; if it remains alive but the stream stays disconnected, an operator may need to intervene. In either case, verify that YouTube is receiving the stream again. A restart is a recovery action, not confirmation of recovery.

For file playback or live capture, test how a restart affects timestamps, audio/video synchronization, and content continuity. These behaviors depend on the source and implementation; do not assume they will be correct without checking the actual output.
Use a separately prepared backup path for important events
YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover. Its guidance describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup. Practice this before an event and verify the viewer-facing result, not just that the backup process starts.

A second encoder is useful only to the extent that it avoids shared failure points. If both paths depend on the same host, power, uplink, or source, a failure in that shared component can take them both down. Account for the bitrate of both streams if they share an uplink. YouTube’s testing and monitoring advice is in Streaming tips.

- Supervised single encoder: simpler to operate, but recovery may require an operator or external supervisor to restart or investigate the process; interruption and recovery time must be tested on the actual setup.
- Separate backup encoder: adds setup and operational complexity, but provides a fallback path when the primary fails if the backup and its dependencies are available. YouTube specifically recommends testing this kind of failover.
Neither approach guarantees a seamless timeline. YouTube does not specify a universal reconnect grace period or promise that an existing event remains continuous after an RTMP disconnect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run an end-to-end outage rehearsal
- Before the event, verify the event, stream URL, RTMPS selection, stream key, codec, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval in the actual encoder configuration.
- Start the stream early enough to inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and preview. Confirm audio, video, and the intended source.
- Test a brief network interruption in a safe rehearsal. Observe whether FFmpeg stays running or exits, what its logs report, whether YouTube reports incoming video again, and what the player shows.
- If using a backup encoder, perform YouTube’s recommended failover test by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable. Confirm the player rolls over to the backup.
- Record the recovery steps for the operator: what to inspect, when to restart FFmpeg, how to start the backup, and how to verify the preview and viewer playback.
Testing only that FFmpeg launches misses the failure mode that matters. Repeat the rehearsal after changing the FFmpeg build, source, network, encoder settings, or event configuration.
Troubleshooting after a brief outage
- FFmpeg is running, but YouTube shows no incoming stream: a live process does not establish an active publishing connection. Check FFmpeg’s logs and Live Control Room health; follow the tested restart or backup procedure and verify video returns.
- FFmpeg exits during the outage: inspect the exit status and logs, then use the configured supervisor or operator procedure to restart. Confirm the correct current URL and key are being used, without exposing the key in shared logs.
- YouTube reports an SSL error: verify the RTMPS scheme and assigned host, and consult YouTube’s RTMPS instructions about port 443 where applicable.
- The stream breaks despite a valid command: check sustained upload capacity, include other simultaneous streams, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Video returns but playback is not continuous: treat the interruption as viewer-visible unless the exact deployment’s rehearsal proved otherwise. YouTube and FFmpeg documentation do not guarantee a continuous session after a disconnect.
- A backup also fails: check for shared dependencies such as the same network uplink, host, power, or source. A second process alone does not remove those failure points.
