How to Keep a YouTube Prerecorded Stream Running While Replacing Its Playlist

Keep the scheduled YouTube stream and encoder connection running; replace the playlist in the encoder or playout system that supplies the feed. Test the transition, because YouTube does not guarantee a gap-free playlist change.

Keep the existing YouTube live stream and encoder connection running, and replace the playlist in the encoder or playout system that sends the video. YouTube Studio receives that feed; its documented stream controls do not include a playlist-replacement tool or promise a gap-free change. The exact steps—and whether viewers see an interruption—depend on your encoder or playout software.

Replace the playlist without ending the YouTube stream

  1. Prepare the scheduled stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and select the scheduled stream. In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the stream URL and stream key from YouTube. YouTube describes these as the connection details that send the encoder’s output to the live stream. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Start the encoder and check its preview. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check picture and sound before clicking Go live. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of time and checking the preview.
  3. Go live, then change the playlist in the feed source. Once the scheduled stream is live, use the encoder or playout system that is generating the feed to replace or edit its playlist. Keep its YouTube output connection active. The precise playlist controls are specific to that software; YouTube’s documented controls do not describe how to edit a third-party playlist.
  4. Monitor the transition. Watch the outgoing preview and listen for missing or interrupted audio. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking that the event is accessible. Test the playlist change with the actual encoder and output configuration before relying on it in a production stream.
  5. Record a local backup if the archive matters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, recommends a local archive as backup, and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Its DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. See Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.

Where to change the playlist—and what YouTube settings do

Change the playlist where the outgoing video is assembled: in your encoder or playout system. YouTube receives that system’s output via the stream URL and key; it does not control the order of videos in an external playlist.

  • Stream URL and key: connect the encoder’s outgoing feed to YouTube. Enter the key in the encoder.
  • Scheduled stream: provides a watch page and a Live Control Room workflow. For encoder streaming, connect and start the encoder, wait for the preview, then click Go live.
  • Reuse settings and key: YouTube lets you copy a previous stream’s metadata, settings and stream key to a new stream. This retains configuration; it does not replace a playlist.
  • Auto-start and auto-stop: these are encoder-stream start and stop settings, not documented playlist controls.

For details, see YouTube’s guides to creating a live stream with an encoder and managing live stream settings.

Will viewers see a gap?

There is no general YouTube guarantee that changing a playlist in a third-party encoder will be seamless. The result depends on how that software handles playlist edits and switches between items. Test the change with the same encoder, playlist, and YouTube output setup you will use live. Check both audio and video at the transition, and keep the encoder connected while you make the edit.

Keep a dependable archive and plan for long streams

Automatic archiving is not a substitute for a local recording when the replay is important. YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but one longer than 12 hours may not be captured. DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable for very long streams. Set viewer expectations accordingly and record locally if you need a reliable copy. YouTube’s live streaming tips also recommend advance setup, preview checks and ongoing audio/video monitoring.
