Run the encoder on your Indian Linux server inside a named tmux session, detach from that session, and then close SSH. Your laptop can disconnect while the remote process continues, provided the server, encoder, input files, network connection, and YouTube ingest remain healthy. tmux keeps a terminal session alive; it does not restart a crashed encoder or survive a server reboot.
What logging out does—and does not—stop
Closing your SSH client is different from stopping the encoder, ending the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, signing out of YouTube, or shutting down the server. If the encoder is running on the server, it can continue sending the playlist after your SSH connection ends.
The server must remain powered on, and the encoder must keep reading its input and sending valid audio and video to YouTube. A running process alone does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream: check the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio.
Start the playlist stream and detach safely
- Prepare the server-side input. Confirm the encoder is installed and that the playlist files and any referenced paths are accessible to the Linux account that will run the encoder. Playlist looping is encoder- and input-specific. Test that it repeats as intended before leaving it unattended; there is no universal loop command that is safe for every playlist setup.
- Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy the current stream URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder instructions say: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, expose it in shell history, or leave it in logs that others can access. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the URL-and-key workflow.
- Choose the current ingest URL. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room if your encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. If SSL negotiation fails, verify that the URL begins with
rtmps, check the host, and follow YouTube’s guidance on specifying port 443. Do not rely on an old tutorial’s copied ingest URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. - Start a named tmux session on the server. For example, run
tmux new -s yt-playlistin your SSH shell, then start your encoder inside that session using the command and playlist configuration appropriate to your files. Keep the encoder’s output visible so you can spot startup errors. - Confirm YouTube receives the stream. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and check stream health. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow calls for clicking Go live after the preview is ready. Do not assume the stream is live merely because the encoder process started.
- Detach, then log out. In the tmux session, press
Ctrl-b, release the keys, then pressd. This detaches from tmux without stopping the encoder. You can now close SSH. - Reconnect to inspect it. SSH back into the same server as the same user and run
tmux attach -t yt-playlistto view the session and encoder output again. Detach again before closing SSH if you want the process to continue.
When tmux is enough—and when it is not
tmux is a practical manual solution to the specific problem of an SSH client disconnecting. It preserves the remote terminal session; it is not a monitor or recovery system.

If recovery after a crash or reboot matters, configure a service manager with an intentional restart policy and useful logging, then test both cases. That is separate Linux operations work, not a YouTube requirement. A restart loop also does not fix a bad playlist path, invalid key, or ingest problem.
RTMPS or HLS?
For ordinary playlist streaming, RTMPS is the straightforward encrypted option when the encoder supports it. HLS is a separate ingestion method, not a requirement for a playlist. YouTube describes HLS for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP. It requires HTTPS ingestion, TS segments, 1–4 second segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; it also has higher latency than continuous RTMP. Check that your encoder and intended media format support the method before choosing it. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

India, YouTube authorization, and stream duration
Operating the VPS in India does not, based on YouTube’s published encoder instructions, create a special India-only setup step. Follow the current URL and key shown for your stream and verify the preview from Live Control Room.
A basic encoder workflow uses the stream URL and key. If instead you build custom software to manage broadcasts through the YouTube Live Streaming API, Google requires OAuth 2.0 for user data; that API does not support service-account authorization, and the channel must be approved for live streaming. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a guarantee that an encoder will run for that long: the host, input, network, and ingest still need to work. See the encoder help page.
Troubleshooting after you log out
- The stream stops as soon as SSH closes: The encoder may have been started outside tmux, or the session may have been terminated rather than detached. Reconnect, check
tmux ls, and start the encoder inside a named session before detaching withCtrl-b, thend. - The tmux session is present but YouTube shows no healthy stream: A live process is not proof of valid ingest. Attach to the session and inspect encoder output, then check Live Control Room preview and stream health. Verify the current stream URL and key.
- The encoder exits or the server reboots: tmux does not restart an exited process and does not preserve a session across reboot. Restart manually, or configure and test a service manager if automatic restart or boot startup is required.
- RTMPS fails during SSL negotiation: Confirm you are using the RTMPS URL displayed for the current stream, check its host, and consult YouTube’s instructions about port 443. An outdated or mistyped URL can prevent connection.
- The playlist does not repeat: Check the encoder’s own playlist/input configuration and whether every referenced file is readable by the server account. Test a full repeat cycle while attached; tmux cannot change looping behavior.
- YouTube’s preview works, but the viewer-facing stream is not as expected: Confirm the correct broadcast is live in Live Control Room and check the stream from its viewer-facing page. The encoder can send a stream without proving that the intended broadcast is the one viewers see.
