OBS’s automatic reconnect can restore a dropped connection only while OBS is still running; it does not, by itself, relaunch OBS after the program crashes. If OBS exits, restart it manually or use a separately configured, tested process watchdog. For a nature-sounds stream that must continue without a computer running at home, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is another option.
First identify what stopped
The right fix depends on whether OBS is still open. A network interruption, a stopped OBS process, and a YouTube encoder error are different failures:
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnection: OBS may still be running but struggling to send data to YouTube. OBS describes these as network-path issues; reconnect settings and connection troubleshooting apply.
- OBS crash or computer restart: OBS is no longer encoding or sending a feed. Its automatic reconnect setting cannot be assumed to restart the application.
- YouTube encoder startup error: OBS is open but YouTube is not accepting the feed. Check the selected stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder if needed.
Prepare OBS and YouTube before going live
Save a known-good OBS setup
Save the scene collection and profile you intend to use. Check that the nature video and audio sources can continue playing under the conditions in your setup—for example, that local media is available and the intended scene is selected. These are operational safeguards, not automatic crash recovery.
Set up the connection and reconnect behavior
- In OBS, configure the streaming service, server and stream key for the YouTube stream.
- Open Settings → Advanced and inspect the automatic reconnect option. OBS documents this as a connection-recovery feature. It can help when the connection drops while OBS remains open, but does not establish that OBS will relaunch after a process crash. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the selected stream and key are the ones you intend to use. Review auto-start and auto-stop for that stream: YouTube says these settings let the encoder start or stop streaming. See Manage live stream settings.
Rehearse the failure, not just the launch
Before relying on an unattended nature stream, run a rehearsal that matches the period you expect it to operate. Test a network interruption and manually close and reopen OBS. Then verify playback in the YouTube player and check stream health in Live Control Room. The OBS Project advises testing before a first live stream, and YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and monitoring stream health. What to do when OBS crashes
- Check whether OBS actually exited. If it is still open, treat the issue as a connection interruption and consult OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting.
- Relaunch OBS. If the process has exited, reopen it manually, or use a process supervisor/watchdog configured separately for your operating system. Test that setup; the official OBS and YouTube documentation cited here does not specify or endorse a particular watchdog tool or configuration.
- Restore the intended broadcast. Confirm the correct scene and profile, that the nature source is playing, and that OBS has the intended stream key and connection status. Start streaming if necessary.
- Check YouTube’s side. If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, verify the key in Live Control Room and copy the correct one into OBS; update OBS if needed. Follow YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Verify from outside OBS. Check the public player and Live Control Room. An OBS status that says it is streaming does not, by itself, confirm that viewers can see the intended YouTube stream.
Choose manual recovery or a watchdog deliberately
Manual restart is simpler, but requires someone to notice the failure and reopen OBS. A watchdog may relaunch a process without someone present, but it must be configured and tested for both an OBS exit and a full host reboot. Neither approach should be treated as proven until you have rehearsed the failure and confirmed YouTube playback afterward. The official documentation cited here does not establish a specific watchdog product or setup.
For nature content, also check the reliability of the media source and the computer’s power and network. A dedicated computer may keep the streaming workload separate from everyday use, and a UPS may help with some power interruptions; neither one relaunches OBS after a crash or repairs a poor network connection.

When the problem is connection quality
OBS says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections usually point to the network path between the computer and the remote ingest server. Its troubleshooting guidance discusses congestion and bitrate; lowering bitrate may help manage congestion, but it can reduce stream quality and does not fix the underlying cause. Dynamic bitrate is not a guarantee of recovery. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide.
Keep the failure categories separate: a connection adjustment may help an unstable feed while OBS is running, but it cannot restart an OBS process that has stopped. YouTube’s encoder recommendations also advise testing the configuration and watching stream health rather than assuming a successful start will remain healthy.
